  • OK I am sure I am opening myself up to being chastised here, but I need some help.
  • This year my wife and I are hosting Thanksgiving for 40 family members and friends, no problem there we do it frequently.
  • The problem is one of them is now very sodium sensitive to the point of it being life threatening if they have to much.
  • I need recipes that will be tasty and friendly for all.
  • Can you please help????

I thought if any company would have low sodium recipes, it would be Mrs Dash. I found their site and looked to see if I would make any of the dishes before I would post it to you. I found a lot of Thanksgiving style dishes that I am gonna try myself. Just copy and past this link.

First of all, do NOT buy a Butterball, Honeysuckle White or any other pre-basted, injected-with-broth-and-all-kinds-of-other-stuff turkey! They are ultra-high in sodium. Although a naturally-raised turkey is more expensive, it will be safe for your guest. Maybe you could do the regular kind for most of your guests and a small natural turkey for your special-needs guest. Just a thought, hon.


My mother was installed with a pacemaker this spring, and also is now on a low sodium diet. She misses salt, and luckily I found a new "spice" which she loves as a sub for NaCl. This is Amchur made in India from green mangoes. Indian recipes use it instead of Lemon juice. It has those qualities of sour and there is no aftertaste. I bought it in the Indian Bazaar Market in Buffalo, ny It is made by MDH an Indian company . I use it in my cooking now, as I will probably follow in my mom's footsteps in a few decades, and want to get the sodium out of my diet.

My dear Mother goes off her low sodium diet when she goes out of town, and on a holiday.


Hey Bobbyc0117. It's sweet of you to want to cater the entire event around this one guest but just so you know, when it comes to life threatening food-related illnesses, there is absolutely no shame in asking the person to bring their own preparations. It's just safer that way and I'm sure that your guest won't mind. When it's their health on the line, it's better to take every precaution. And that way you can make all of your tasty dishes for the remianing 39 guests and have them turn out as you intended - full flavoured, etc. (why should you all suffer for the sake of the one, right? ;)
As for the turkey, if they really want to partake in that portion of the meal, be sure to avoid the turkeys listed above by crabhappychick as well as any kosher turkeys. Check the label to see whether it was brined or partially brined - that will be a huge no-no. For your other recipes, if you really want to include this guest you could make your recipes as you normally do (without salt, of course) and set small portions of each recipe aside and season them with herb blends such as the ones posted on this site by Zena824 and chefjeb - just search under "Salt Free". Then you can season the remainder as you normally would for your other guests to enjoy. Best of luck to you!


Certainly agree with above posts.
Buy fresh turkeys never frozen
use fresh veges, not canned
make own soups, not canned
Make own desserts as box mixes, store bought have lots of salt
Buy salt free blends
Have guest bring her own salt subs
Fresh fruit as dessert
Even check out the beverage and wine as often salt content may be high
Fresh, home ade is the best in my opinion
If you buy READ LABELS as even low sodium still may have too much

Just adding my "two cents" here. My 84 year old mother is hypertensive and needs to watch her sodium intake, so she turns to her son (me) the Critical Care Nurse who just happens to have a passion for cooking. One thing I have found is "Kitchen Basics" makes no salt added chicken and beef broths. Which amounts to 40mg of sodium per cup of broth. If you can find the stocks locally, they are at www.kitchenbasics.net. I also have a recipe for no sodium soy sauce (I call it Oy Sauce) if that would help.
