Ingredients

3 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate

2/3 cup sugar

½ cup milk

1 beaten egg

½ cup shortening

1 cup sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 eggs

2 cups sifted cake flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon salt

2/3 cup milk

Directions

Combine chocolate, 2/3 cup sugar, ½ cup milk and beaten egg in saucepan. Cook and stir over low heat till chocolate melts and mixture thickens; cool. Stir shortening to soften. Gradually add 1 cup sugar, creaming till light and fluffy. Add vanilla extract. Add the 2 eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each.

Sift together flour, baking soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture alternately with 2/3 cup milk; beginning and ending with flour mixture; beat after each addition. Blend in chocolate mixture. Bake in 2 paper-lined 9 x 1½-inch round pans in moderate oven at 350° F for 25 to 30 minutes or till done.
