Ingredients

1 cup chopped dates

1 tsp. baking soda

3/4 cup boiling water

1 egg

3/4 cup brown sugar

1 tsp. salt

1-1/2 tsps. vanilla

1-1/2 cups flour

1 tsp. baking powder

3/4 cup chopped floured walnuts or to replace walnuts I use candied fruit - same amount.

3/4 cup melted shortening

Directions

Put baking soda over chopped dates and cover with boiling water. Mix well and let stand until cool.

Beat eggs, add sugar gradually, then salt and vanilla.

Combine with date mixture.

Add dry ingredients, floured nuts and melted shortening.

Mix well.

Pour into greased 9 x 5 inch loaf pan.

Bake at 350°F for 1 hour.

Cut into slices and then into fingers.

Served with whipped butter or clotted cream.

We love date loaves. I've moved recently and lost quite a bit of my posessions during the move and quess what the carton with my recipes as well. I use to make a date loaf at least once a month & it was very similar to this one. I am baking it tonight thank you
