Ingredients
  • 1 large head green cabbage at room temperature
  • 1 medium white onion finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1-1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup short grain rice washed and drained
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1-1/4 cups water divided
  • 4 cloves garlic chopped
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice

Directions
  1. Separate leaves from head of cabbage carefully.
  2. Drop leaves a few at a time into a large pot of boiling salted water.
  3. Cook until limp about 5 minutes then drain and cut leaves in half.
  4. Remove and discard center ribs then set aside.
  5. Combine all remaining ingredients except 1 cup water, garlic and lemon juice.
  6. Place 1 tablespoon mixture on each leaf and roll up tucking in sides to contain filling.
  7. Combine remaining ingredients then pack finished rolls flap side down.
  8. Close together making layers in a Dutch oven sprinkling each layer with the mixture.
  9. Invert a heavy heat proof plate over rolls.
  10. Cover pan and bring to simmer on stove top over medium heat then cook 60 minutes.
