Red Earth Cake

- Paste: shopping list
- 4 Tbsp. cocoa shopping list
- 1 tsp. red food color shopping list
- 2 Tbsp. strong coffee shopping list
- Cake: shopping list
- 1 1/2 c. sugar shopping list
- 1/2 c shortening shopping list
- 2 eggs shopping list
- 2 c. flour minus 2 Tbsp. shopping list
- 1/2 tsp. salt shopping list
- 1 tsp. soda shopping list
- 1 tsp. vanilla shopping list
- 1 cup sour milk shopping list
- Frosting: shopping list
- 1 lb. powdered sugar shopping list
- 4 Tbsp. cocoa shopping list
- 4 Tbsp. strong coffee shopping list
- 1 tsp. vanilla shopping list
- red food color as desired shopping list
How to make it
- Make paste and set aside.
- Cream sugar and shortening, add eggs.
- Combine flour, salt, and soda. Add to cake alternately with the sour milk.
- Add vanilla, then the paste mixture last. Mix well.
- Bake at 350 til tests done with toothpick. (Above bake time is a guess; no temp. or time was on Mom's recipe.)
- We always used layer pans, but can use 13x9.
- Frosting:
- Cream the butter or margarine. Combine the cocoa and sugar. Add gradually, mixing well. Then add vanilla, coffee, and red food color to desired shade. Frost cool cake.
