German Cookie Bars Recipe
I don't know how to spell the German word for this cookie treat. When I used to celebrate Christmas, this was one of the cookies I always made.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups AP Flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 cup of sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter flavored shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 Tablespoons milk
  • Jar of favorite jam, jelly, preserves or fruit spread

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 400
  2. Butter a small cookie sheet and set aside
  3. Combine flour through milk and knead gently
  4. Divide dough in half
  5. Press one half of the dough into prepared baking sheet
  6. Spread Jam over the dough
  7. Cover with the rest of the dough ((I roll it out and cut shapes with a cookie cutter for the top) it's artistic license. I've also made a lattice for the top, which was more tricky but beautiful))
  8. Bake for 20 minutes or so until it starts to brown
  9. Cool in pan and cut into squares
  10. Layer on waxed paper
