Ingredients
  • My Dad, My Hero
  • This is to my dad,
  • Who led a good life and gave me life,
  • Who loved me like only a dad could,
  • You where my light for my life, it was good.
  • You raised me as best as you knew,
  • You taught there were two tracks in life,
  • Right and wrong and right was track you gave my life.
  • When your country said we need you,
  • You didn’t say no, of course I’ll go!
  • You served your country, you gave your best.
  • You came home when some did not, they are at rest.
  • Your gave your part, your sacrifice,
  • While they gave their life, their sacrifice.
  • You made a pledge to those left behind, to lead a good life.
  • You pledged to give your wife a good life for those not coming home.
  • When you had children you pledged to those brothers who gave their all,
  • Your children would represent them all.
  • You raised me and you praised me as a father could,
  • And when I did wrong you steered back to the
  • Right track as a father should, it was good.
  • You taught to laugh and it’s ok to cry, because
  • Crying is just drops of love that flow from my eyes.
  • You cried at the sight of my first child, the tears that flowed
  • Where like you said, tears that spoke of love of life.
  • When you passed, I grieved so hard, you where my pillar of life.
  • It has been so hard to let go, I wanted you here, not to go.
  • But when I saw the life you gave to me, I knew how you would want me to be. My grief I realized was for not, you taught me to live, that was your will. My tears turned to smiles and admiration, for you’re my father who taught me so well.
  • Now that I have grown and look at life, my children, I see you there, on their faces. You have not left; you’re in their eyes and their tears,
  • And like you said, tears of love on such small faces.
  • I miss you more than I can say, but from this day, I choose to smile,
  • For you are my Dad, you went the extra mile, and gave me my smile.
  • Your gave to your country, you gave to your wife, you gave to your children. What a sight! You are my Dad, you are my Hero, and I will love you forever with my smile.

Directions
  1. I met Denise about 7 years ago in Benehana's restaurant in Houston Texas. We were both there for the International Quilt Market and I was waiting to be seated at my table.
  2. I saw her standing there alone and seeing her quilt badge I said come with me there is room for one more. It turned out it was her birthday and she was alone at the show.
  3. She wanted to celebrate and have a Mai Tai , I got her the drink, we had a great dinner, lots of laughing and telling stories. She has been my friend every since and has a special place in my heart. She is a "special" lady.

Your a great friend JJ! :)

You're a nice person to have around.

Wonderful writing JJ - thank you for being my buddy.

Very nice. Sounds like what a father was meant to be. Thanks

Good Morning JJ,
Thanks for reprinting that beautiful poem you wrote for me. When you originally wrote it I had it printed and framed for each of my children which hangs in their bedroom with a picture of their beloved "papa" and one hangs in my office. It still makes me cry and I read it right before each trip to the cemetery for strength. It is as beautiful today as the day you wrote it. I hope it is strength and inspiration for many. Wishing you a beautiful holiday season.
Your friend and companion along the way,
Denise
