- 1 cup water shopping list
- 1 cup Crisco shopping list
- 4 or 5 smashed cardamom seeds(wrap seeds in the corner of a kitchen towels and smash with a rolling pin. shopping list
- 3 pkgs dry yeast shopping list
- 1/2 C warm water shopping list
- 1tsp sugar shopping list
- 4 eggs shopping list
- 1C white sugar shopping list
- 1 tsp salt shopping list
- 1 cup butter shopping list
- approximately 6 or 7 cups flour shopping list
How to make it
- Part 1:Heat 1-1/2 C Milk, 1 C water, 1 C Crisco and smashed Cardamom seed in saucepan over low heat just until the Crisco melts. Set aside until cool.
- Part 2: dissolve 3 pks yeast in 1/2 C warm water and add 1 tsp sugar in a small bowl. let sit until good and foamy.
- Part 3: Beat together 4 eggs, 1 C sugar and 1 tsp salt.
- Now in a very large bowl mix together all 3 parts. Stir in flour 1 cup at a time until a soft but not too sticky dough forms. (Can start out with an electric mixer and switch to a wooden spoon once it becomes too stiff for mixer) Cover with plastic wrap and set aside in warm place to rise until double in size.
- When ready to make rolls, melt 2 sticks butter. Coat a large baking pan well with additional butter.
- Roll out dough on floured surface until slightly less than 1/2 " thick.
- Coat well with melted butter.
- Cut dough into 4" x 1-1/2" pieces. Take ahold of one of the short sides and fold over to meet other short side to make a "pocketbook" shape. Place rolls in greased pan about 1" apart. Let rise again until doubled and bake in 400 degree oven until golden brown, about 15 min.
- To make sweet rolls, cut dough into long thin strips after buttering and roll into spirals and sprinkle well with sugar. Pearl sugar is traditional if you can find it. Let rise again and bake as directed above.
