Ingredients
  • 5 cups
  • 10 - 1/2 cup servings
  • 1 lb. 4.75 ounces (20.75 ounces)
  • 4 cups old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup wheat germ
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, optional
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 6 tablespoons vegetable oil or canola
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract (imitation for us)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon butter extract

Directions
  1. Pre-heat the oven to 275*F. Lightly grease a 11 x 17 baking pan.
  2. Combine the oats, wheat germ, brown sugar and salt.
  3. In a saucepan, combine the maple syrup, honey and oil.
  4. Bring to a simmer and remove from the heat.
  5. Stir in the extracts.
  6. Pour the maple syrup mixture over the oat mixture. Stir to combine.
  7. Spread onto the baking pan.
  8. Bake for 45 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes.
  9. Allow to cool and then store in an airtight container.
  10. You can mix in nuts and dried fruits right after baking. Add chocolate chips, other chips, mini - candy coated chocolate after cooled.
  11. I just add them when serving, that way everyone can have the flavor they would like.
  12. Serve with granola, make a trail mix, etc.

  18. Sodium: 68 mg (or 10 mg if you leave the salt out)

  22. Protein: 2 g
  23. Iron: 2%
  24. Approximate cost as of 3/2009: (If you use real maple syrup the cost would be higher and of course it just depends on what things cost in your area.) $2.33 for 20.75 ounces

Sound great!


I am enjoying it every morning with my banana and plain yogurt. It is fairly sweet, so I may try to cut down on some of that, but with plain yogurt it is just right.
