This is a picture of Jack, the dog that belonged to George, my husband Tom's Dad. This picture was taken in the mid-30s, when George was courting Caroline, now my mother-in law of 93. He was always a well-trained dog. Read more Caroline relates that George had an allotment (a small plot of land rented cheaply from the local authority where you can grow your own produce) where he was a keen veg grower, and kept the plot neat and well-tended. One day Jack was aat the allotment with him, and happened to catch sight of a cat at the far end of the allotment. Off he went after it, but instead of tearing straight across the runner beans etc. at the speed of sound, he carefully padded along and around the paths in between the veg and fruit patches, so as not to damage anything! Needless to say, much to his disgruntlement, he didn't catch the cat - but at least his master was well pleased with him. Caroline relates also that when she and George started to 'step out' together, Jack did not take kindly to her, whom he regarded as a rival for No.2 place in the 'pack'. There was no aggression, but every time the couple took the dog out walking with them, Jack would always make his point by wedging himself in between them, no matter how often they changed places. Caroline recently dug this tiny photo out and had it enlarged so we could enjoy it. See less

Oh and I loved the story about Jack. He kind of has a border collie look to him. Was he a border collie? He is just beautiful and so proud!
