Coumadin / Vitamin K safe diet

  • borinda 13 years ago
HELP! Please! If any of you can direct me to vegetable recipes which are superior choices for anyone on a coumadin regime I would be so appreciative. We've brought my father-in-law to live with us for a bit before transitioning to assisted living. He's on coumadin and it's an entirely new experience for me navigating those dietary waters. I realize coumadin is a commonly used anti-clotting medication and thought many here at GR may find this thread helpful, too.

This is something you should probably get answered by your doctor. We really aren't qualified.

Went through this with my Mother-in-law. Pretty much you have to eliminate all leafy green vegetables which makes me hate the medicine. I swear its another of those cures that will cause another problem. Anyway , Kristopher is correct. Its a doctor thing. You just hit one of my rant buttons.

Got it - I had already done research and figured out what's "high, medium, and low" but was wondering if there were favorites out there among the "low" category. My discovery as of yesterday is how big a hit baby carrots are for my father-in-law and he's earned the new name of Mr. Sweettooth. By the way and point of interest... the Anticoagulation Clinic at the hospital which will manage this med for him also gives classes about the meds, diet, and lifestyle and points of concern/care. Interesting discovery and if anyone else is going through this learning curve it's worth checking out such a program at your local points of care, too.

My mother started warfarin ( aka rat poison and marketed with Coumidan label )about a yr ago. off the top of my head, foods to avoid: grapefruit, dark leafy, green tea. the list in the drug handbook is a mile long. I am an RN, and the best resource for information is the Pharmacist.

There are a few great cookbooks for lowering/eliminating salt, Bobby Mostyn, and Mayo Clinic has a beautiful and wise one. I got the Mostyn book for my mother's house. It is Full of Information. ie don;t do Mrs. Dash. the vit. K in the dark leafies is that same potassium in the fake salt by Mrs. Dash.

I found an indian food, amchur, which is used to make things "lemony" or sour. It is a powder, and I use it myself (I am trying to eliminate salt from my world too) . amchur is green mangoes ground and dried.

I wish there was a better, not so limiting answer to "fear of clotting". Any one know anything?
by the way, the RN Pacemaker Specialist told me a little story. His patient on coumadin was on a cruise ship. all of a sudden he fell against a sharp object, and bled to death.

After about 2 months, previously enjoyed salted foods will be TOO SALTY.
