Groups

  • wynnebaer 13 years ago
    I am wondering how we know what groups are being posted in?....If I post something in a group that's on page 22 of the group listing, is it supposed to go to the front page like it used to?....And if I don't participate in a group, how am I to see posts that I may miss by not being a member.? Sometimes I see a group with posts that I can relate to and then join. I feel like I'm missing a lot from other members. Is there something I'm not seeing?

    Thanks.

    No Wynne, you're right, it's confusing. If you click on the tab in the "discussions" part that says "groups I've participated in" you should be able to find your comment. They don't seem to 'bump" like they used to as far as the Groups on 1st page thing. But they do stay current as far as in the "discussions" tab. That's how I go to 'em now.

    The groups page should list groups by "activity" in the past week (although this has been updated since the new site launch...will be updated shortly).

    In the discussions tab you should be able to find threads from your groups and that you've participated in. Although, you are correct that currently the sort is by newest thread, and *not* last post within a thread. This is something that we can change. We will look into this soon.

    Thanks so much, Kris...But I have to say that I belong to several groups and every time a new thread is posted lately it does not show up for us that are interested in the "sort"...Have to admit the way it is now, I feel like I'm missing out on my friends posts and they mine, but more than that, potential friends posts to groups....I can only speak for myself but have to say, I'm finding it really difficult to keep up with the groups I already belong to and making new friends......Make sense?

    @wynnebaer,

    We are going to take a look at the groups area to see what we can do to make things easier. In the meantime, are you using these pages to keep track of things:

    I gotta say, I'm with Wynne. And, group participation is way down since the roll out of the new site. Some that had posts on a daily basis have not had posts since. I think it's because it's just too much trouble to figure out. (Sorry Kris). I do use the Discussions tab, BUT, you can't tell by the thread name what group it's in, until you get to the group, etc. And I have SUCH a hard time reading this font, especially where it's so light, I just don't bother. I love the new site, and appreciate everything you are doing, but, it would be nice to have the groups list by newest thread if possible. Especially since there are only 4 groups to a page now...that's a lot of click through. : )

    I mean, have the groups bump to the top of the list when they get a post when I say list by newest thread. That may not be feasible on the new desgin, though.

    We'll hopefully take a look at this over the weekend and see what we can do. No worries, we'll get it figured out.

    Thanks for adding the name of the group beside the new threads in the discussion tabs!!

    Also, the threads are now sorted by last post instead of by creation date.

    Anything else that would help your daily group activities?

    In relation to the 4 groups per page , how about having an "All",tab, and scrolling down the 174563 groups.if you desire.

    We are going to work on the "groups" tab output. It hasn't been updated since the site re-launched. Stay tuned on that.

    OMG...174,563 groups! Maybe a pm to the creators of some inactive groups is in order. See if they care if you delete the group...could free up some space! I know we have LOTS of duplicates, for example, I know there's a chicken group that was started by organicmama, and she hasn't been here in over two years. We've moved on to 4 or 5 other chicken groups since then. lol

    Sorry to be a PIA, but my group Bigger Massholes isn't moving up. when you go to discussions and even hit the tab that says today it isn't showing. today there were two threads started and neither is there. this is kind of a problem because a lot of members are not posting in there anymore and when they do there are multiple threads going so no actual conversation if that makes sense. It does show when I go to groups I have participated in. Is there a way that when you go to groups from the home page the 4 that show up will be the 4 that were last posted in??? what determines that a group is popular? It may have a lot of members but if those members haven't been on in a year then it really isn't popular. thanks Kris you are doing a great job.

    @laurieg,

    This is because your group is "private". We used to show threads titles from private groups in the discussions output, but we changed it to have full privacy for what happens in a group. I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this. Initially I liked the idea of private group threads showing up, as only members could actually view the discussions, and it spurred more group requests for private groups. But we did get some complaints about "private" thread titles showing up there. We'll eventually revisit this issue and see what we can do.

    As far as the default "groups" output, they are supposed to be sorted by weekly activity, but the "activity" counts haven't been updated since the re-launch. These were supposed to be updated already (but we got bogged down by some unexpected bugs this week). The groups section in general needs some attention from us.

    Thanks for the explaination. I made the group private for a few reasons, one the members requested it and the other because we were having a problem with a "foodie"
    Who then turned around and created an alias and got into the group anyway, so nothing is really private (that is why there are two Masshole groups)
    I like the aspect of only members being able to see what we post in the threads but if no one posts its kind of a moot point.

    oh and I love the aspect of being able to banish someone from the group!! LOL

    Good you found that! You can block a user, and furthermore the new site is really good at preventing people from signing up under "aliases". These two things should prevent the trolls.
