I really, really wanted to like this. Having grown up in the Kansas City area, I can tell you this tastes nothing like Kansas City BBQ. This has a very pungent taste. Way too much vinegar and allspice. It tastes like a mild BBQ sauce that has been mixed with a sour brine that you would use on German meats. Perhaps another way I could describe it as having a spicy brine taste like that used for pickled beets. I thought I would let hubby weigh in. His taste buds are totally opposite mine. He doesn’t detect any vinegar or pickling spices. Then again, he loves pickled beets and vinegar based sauces. He thought it had a nice spice, but lacked overall flavor. I didn’t mind a thin coat of BBQ sauce on the ribs, but I wouldn’t want them slathered with it. It just makes me pucker!

That is a bit much vinegar plus the dried mustard. I could see how this made you pucker! Your ribs looks great though :)

Thank you, Mommyluvs2cook! Never thought about the mustard adding to the tartness.

Awesome picture Diz! Too bad the sauce wasn't to your taste. It sounds like it would be a good sauce in writing but I guess a 1/2 cup vinegar was too much. Were you able to doctor it up to your liking?

Thank you, Cosmicmother! I did not even attempt to tweak it. We don't typically use a lot of BBQ sauce so I cut the recipe in half. Since DH was okay with it, I decided to discard what was leftover rather than waste more ingredients.

Indeed, that does look like a lot of vinegar. Did you use apple cider vinegar or regular distilled vinegar?
