4th Of July Saturday

Happy 4th everyone!! Just laying in bed trying to decide when to get up lol. Don't have to leave to go to my mom's until this afternoon, so I'm enjoying the quiet. We invited some friends to go. It's legal to shoot off fire works there so it should be a blast. We usually go all out when they have a party on the 4th or the new year with fire works. Lot's of food and alcohol, will probably be staying the night there lol! Hope everyone enjoys there day!!

Happy 4th Michelle! Happy 4th everyone:)

We just got back from the grocery store..we'll be having Alaskan King Crab dipped in melted butter and Rick picked up some oysters (gag) he'll grill some and probably eat some raw with hot sauce/horseradish...that's what's for lunch..
Grilled chicken garlic & artichoke sausages for dinner along with mac salad..we have a day of eating some good food and watching some movies..we aren't the type to go anywhere on holidays...
There are 2 towns in Butte County, Gridley & Oroville, (we're in Butte Co) that allow fireworks...I am hoping no one has any up here..it's illegal and dangerous. Especially since we are in a drought!
They have a fireworks show at Oroville Lake, which is a few minutes from us, but the lake is so low and there's no parking..so that's out..we'll be in bed before that even starts at 10 pm hahaha

    Have a grand day all:)

Hey all. Having people over for the fourth in case you couldn't tell by yesterday's post lol
Wilmington is very big of Fourth of July celebration. We even have a Fourth of July building! It's a week long of stuff ending with a huge firework show tonight. Usually everything is in the town common and they light the fireworks off from behind the high school. And have a carnival in the school field. But they just build a billion dollar new high school and they tore down the old and it's all fenced up. So they moved the carnival part and the fireworks to the Shriners parking lot which iis huge. We trekked their last year and waited in huge traffic line. Only to find out that the new location allows us to see the fireworks from our front porch! Lol. So this year we know better. My sister was supposed to come for weekend with my nieces but they are both sick :(. Bummer. I miss them.

    HI all.

Love your avatar, Michelle. Briauna is so cute! Have fun at the fireworks!

Marie, i can understand not wanting to set off fireworks in a bad drought. We faced that several years ago. After getting 5 inches of rain in 2 days, we may only have difficulty getting to the fort - the river was supposed to exceed the crest! Then the rest of the rain fizzled so we probably will not have a problem.

For all stateside, I have heard that the FBI has cancelled all agents vacations, and most agents are advising their families to stay away from 4th of July celebrations. The terrorist threat is elevated again and trouble is expected. It is a scary world we live in. I alternate between "Heck no, I won't go." and refusing to be intimidated. I think it is the cowardly yellow streak that runs up my back --- LOL!

I have fixed a pasta salad for church potluck tomorrow, and a loaf of strawberry bread to take along also. Made very basic macaroni salad (daughter is allergic to carrots and tomatoes unless they are cooked beyond recognition) for this evening, set the burgers out to thaw, and decided to sit for a while until I am up to attacking the disaster in my kitchen. Trouble darted into the pan drawer, had to haul her out. Then she climbed into one of the lazy Susans, and I had to call her out. She tried to get into my Grandpa's hutch when I opened it to get a bowl, and has been a holy terror all morning -- chased A.C. all over the living room until he took an "offensive posture" and she backed down. Her own fault, he was telling her to mind her manners.

    Happy 4th everyone!

Good Morning Everyone! (Almost afternoon!) Was going to start the thread but thought it was more appropos if someone in the States did seeings it's your Holiday today!
HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY to all you Americans!
Bri looks so grown up in her dance pics in your avatar Michelle! She must have a lot of fun doing that! :) Have a fun time at your Mom's with your friends. It's nice you can spend the night and don't have to drive afterwards!
MAJOR DROOL on your Alaskan King Crab Marie! I would have bet that Rick would have been smoking ribs today! :) I'm afraid of oysters myself. Jim just tried them recently. Those sausages sound awesome!
Burgers sound like a great festive meal for the 4th of July Karen! Too bad Applebee's didn't quite cut it yesterday. :( How are the chicks today? They must be getting a lot bigger eh? Very nice on the Red-tailed Hawk. I find hawks very hard to identify. What kind of bird is it that has nested in your garage? I'd be beside myself worrying. :)
Laurie, your 4th of July meal sounds wonderful too! Have fun! Hope you get some pool time in!
VAL! I just saw your post this morning! SO good to see you! There have been a lot of others that haven't been able to sign back in on their old account I'm afraid. And indeed....I'm still here...but I've never 'headed up the group! :) I am very talkative and perhaps seem to have the most time on my hands?? LOL. Tina is still here at the helm, and Laurie as you said, and then LORI! So great to see you too! :) It's like old homecoming week! LOL! Do hope you both pop in more regularly. Nice new/newer people in here for you to get to meet.
    I've never made Val's
    Skillet Lemon Chicken
Lori and I have meant to! :) So many recipes...so little time?
I see you found the Philly Fruit cloud post :)
Joce and Tina....hope you guys are doing okay.
Shona, hope you're feeling a lot better today?
Michelle B......how is hubby enjoying Fiji? How are those cooking classes going?
I made a nice omelette for Jim and I for brekkie and then we went to the Farmer's Market. I was hoping for some baby potatoes and indeed I got some! :) Also bought a dish of microgreens for $5 which is kind of fun, some beets and four pork Thai skewers to use as part of lunch.
Took out four little lamb chops for dinner. Not quite sure how I'll prepare them yet but I will grill them.
Had a brief chat with Benjamin this morning and his girlfriend was making him
Goi Ga tonight and it looked amazing! He sent pictures!

Happy 4th of July to all my American friends!
It sounds like you are going to really have a great time today, Michelle!

OMG! My eyes nearly popped out when I saw you are having Alaskan King Crab tonight, Marie! YUMMY! I don't mind smoked oysters or if they are cooked properly. RAW UGH! I tried them once in Malapeque sp? PEI where they are famous for them and sorry but they taste like snot really!!! Fireworks would be very dangerous during a drought!

Laurie, BIG BRAVO to your Mom for investing in a house with the money she won! That was absolutely incredible to hear.

We are going to Smiths Falls to pick up pork chops from the butcher there. We normally buy twenty pounds of them when we go. The last batch just ran out and we bought them in February which is pretty good. Den went grocery shopping and did his beer run and everything is very busy b/c it is in the midst of tourist season. I don't know what I am having my tummy is still upset. Den of course will have his cheeseburgers and fries.

    Wishing everyone a wonderful day!

Hi Laurie..sounds like a festive day you have planned:)

Karen, yeah, I just cannot get into the fireworks celebration this year..pisses me off they didn't totally ban them..there always seems to be fireworks related fires started...very scary, especially when you live on top of a mountain and you have one way out..

Janet, Rick makes ribs so often, I think he's getting tired of them..lol I hear ya on the oysters..I have had them once and once it was in my mouth I didn't know what to do with it..seemed to get bigger as well..ugh:)

Joce, it was on sale for $12.99 a lb..we decided to splurge:) They are frozen of course, I have both the crab and oysters on ice in the fridge. Ha! Ha! on oysters tasting like snot! I agree totally ROTFL..you crack me up!
Hope your tummy feels better dear...

Hi VAL! SO good to see you!!!!!

    Here's Lori's post:

Hey all! Just had the urge to pop in!! Glad to see the group going and that all are well. Hi Val! Your
    Skillet Lemon Chicken
Is one of my faves! The old account is still there, maybe you can get in.

Sounds like a great day Janet. enjoyed your fb pix.

Karen I posted yesterday on fb that eggs here in East TN had jumped to 3.44 a dozen, and a couple people responded that there is some kind of epidemic with chickens!! Hope it misses yours.

Michelle, Woohoo on the Kroger cards. That's awesome. Lobster and rib eye...doesn't get better.

Feel better Shona. Those Philly clouds sound great. Do you have that posted Janet?

Hey Laurie. Sounds like a fun meal for the holiday. You had me at cheesecake brownies!

Here I have posted on the wrong day. Lol. Been too long. Happy 4th!

Home alone today and the fires out here are a ways a way but no fireworks - everything is banned. So hubby and I are staying put on the ranch and keeping the irrigation sprinklers going and hoping that no one does anything crazy.
Tonight should be about barbeque but it's 101 outside now. Don't think I could stand outside and cook ribs or such. So we are cooling it in the house with the AC going full blast (prayers that it doesn't give up on us). We are having chorizo and bean burritos, homemade guacamole and salsa. And of course, white sangria. That should keep us full for a good long while.
It is great to read everyone's posts and see so many of you still active. Take care and have a Happy and Safe Independence Day!

Ugh on 101F Val! :( Your 4th of July menu sounds excellent! Yummers on the white sangria. I make red sangria a lot during the summer but have never made white. So how do you like living in Eastern Washington now? How big is your ranch? Do you have horses and such?

They had fresh tomatoes at the Market today. Wonder if they were all greenhouse tomatoes? Anyway....they wanted an arm and a leg for them. I showed great willpower as tomatoes are my fave. They were charging $2 for one medium sized tomato. :(

    Hi all.

Good to hear from you, Lori.

Marie, eggs here run $3.96 for organic brown eggs, $3.69 for cage free, and $2.72 factory-farmed white eggs. I like the organic but the cage free are acceptable. My chickens are far too young to lay eggs.

Welcome, Valerieginmalott. So cool you live on a ranch. Do you raise cattle? My hubby and I live in the Ozarks on a small place. We love it!

Joce, I can tolerate oysters raw (don't care for them that way) but really like them fried or in dressing / stuffing / oyster soup.

Got to go. Daughter is here - hi to anyone I missed. Have a great day.

Our ranch is in alfalfa. We lease out the field. We're too old to farm it anymore. It is almost 100 acres. My sister's house is new, ranch style. Ours is the old original ranch house. Almost 90 years old. So our houses sit on about 5 acres. Lovely English and Black Walnut trees, Mulberry trees and Catalpa trees. Lots of shade around our house. Some of you may have heard about the Carlton Complex Fire that happened last July. It was 256,000 acres and we almost lost our place. If it wasn't for all the apple orchards with their irrigation we wouldn't be here today. We were evacuated for 3 days. We have a beautiful garden and lots of rolling lawn. Apricot tree and 3 varieties of grapes. And that's what there is at Red Bear Ranch!

Happy 4th of July!! I fell Thursday night and spent 4 hours on the floor yelling for Olivia. I struggled and wiggled and tried to get up from flat on my back and all I managed to do was sit and lean on the wall. Olivia couldn't hear me. I need a bull horn. Anyway, Charlie scratched a mole while trying to help me get up and it bled forever. The paramedics came and got me off the floor and bandaged my arm. I think I was in a bit of shock, after I got to bed, I shook for hours. So I'm upside down in my sleeping pattern. Sleep all day and stay up all night.

Have the most delicious meals and enjoy the freedom of living in the USA.
Marie, I love crab legs....worth the splurge. I'd join Rick with an oyster shooter.
Karen, so sorry about the chickens, you have had so much rain. LOL on the kitty antics.
Val, hello, happy to see you post. That is some heat you are experiencing.
Michelle, enjoy the fireworks and cook out. Bri is adorable.
Laurie, I remember that Wilmington did go all out on the 4th. Have a memorable day.
Joce. I hope your stomach feels better. That's a lot of pork chops. I'd love a cheeseburger like Den's.
    Pooh, I missed Lori, too.
Janet, saw the furniture you posted on FB. I love it. certainly the retro look I'm into. Now, I like raw oysters, fried oysters, broiled oysters. No Florida cracker is allowed to dislike oysters. Lamb riblets sound good. The micro greens/beets would make a spectacular salad. I'm having an omelette for dinner with English muffins and apple butter.

Liv is working the crawfish boil/potato/corn/sausage in the sand at The Toasted Monkey. The hotel is completely booked for the weekend. She is going to be exhausted.

I have Molly in her thundershirt. She will get a xanax at 8:00 pm. I'll watch the Capitol 4th Celebration. Fred loved watching it. I'll miss him conducting from the couch.

How old does a chicken have to be to lay eggs Karen? Have a nice evening with your daughter. Ugh on oyster soup. :)
Val, your place sounds wonderful! I've never heard of a Catalpa tree before! Crazy on that fire! Glad you were safe. Why is the ranch named "Red Bear"? :)
Sorry you had such a hard time Tina. Again, I wish you could get one of those alarm thingys to wear around your neck to summon help. My Mom has one.
LOL Tina @ Mom's retro furniture! LOL! It's solid as a rock, firm, no sagging. It will last FOREVER! Too funny. Jim and a guy moved it out of Mom's house into the garage for the garage sale and it didn't sell. Mom says "Oh well, we'll have to move it back in then" and Jim says "That stuff weighs A TON. I'm not bringing it back in". So it is now free. My cousin's wife put dibs on it so that's good. An omelette with English muffins sounds wonderful. Enjoy your Capitol Celebration. Gentle hugs.

Wow on the ranch! Our house is about 60 - 65 years old, "giraffe" stone, on 80 acres of mixed woodland and some pasture. We have Mark Twain forest on three sides, a vacant but privately owned 80 acres next to us. Nearest neighbor is half mile away. We love it.

Hope you feel better, Tina. I agree you need a medic alert thing to use. My Mom had one, and my Dad did after she passed.

Janet, I have no idea how old a chicken is before laying eggs. Mine are just babies. They finally got brave enough to go OUTSIDE in the chicken yard. I LOVE a good oyster soup..ha!

Burgers were pretty good. Macaroni salad was OK - forgot that GS didn't eat it or baked beans so he had one burger. LOTS of macaroni salad left over. One burger. Leftovers one of these days.

It is almost time to go. I am tired already and Wayne is dozing, so we will make quite the pair. LOL!
