A Shot of Whiskey Wednesday

  • Good4U 9 years ago
    Good morning everyone.
I had no idea how a Shot of Whiskey got its name.
In the old west a .45 cartridge for a six-gun cost 12 cents, so did a glass of whiskey. If a cowhand was low on cash he would often give the bartender a cartridge in exchange for a drink. This became known as a "shot" of whiskey.
Kind of interesting learning about origins.
LOL a drink I don't like it Whiskey at all and just thinking about someone downing a shot of it just gives me the creeps!

Kimmer, Very pleased you were able to drop in:) However, I am very sorry to hear you are having such a stressful time of it. Moving only is very nerve-racking let alone a young death in the family as well:( My sincerest condolences to you and your family.

Laurie, I am glad your fit.

Marie, You guys are certainly very very busy which is a good thing.

Karen, How is Geezer doing today?

Janet, How did Ben's talk go last night? Where did you end up going for dinner? I hope you are feeling even better today.

    HUGS))) Tina.

I have been up since about 1:00 AM. I only realized why, b/c I forgot to take one pain pill that helps to dull the nerve ending pains. Duh! Oh well shaking my head:( At the moment I haven't a clue what we are having for dinner. I will let you know later.

Hoping everyone has a good day.

    Good morning!

The sun is shining, It is a gorgeous morning. Birds are chatting outside. A cup of coffee is resting on the sofa table behind me. Homer is laying beside Wayne’s chair. The only distraction is the fake lady bugs that have sneaked inside to keel over and die on my sun room floor. Grrr.

Joce: Geezer has returned to semi-normal, which is as close to normal as he usually gets. He rubbed and purred this morning until I picked him up and cuddled him for a while. He is probably reacting to the loss of his cat buddies. I do not plan, however, on meowing a conversation. He will have to interpret human language, as usual. I would acquire another cat for outside, but it would have to be strong to deal with Geezer and the escape-prone A.C. When A.C. first arrived I wanted to have him as an outside cat, but Wayne wants him to stay inside. I think he will eventually become an indoor outdoor kitty, providing the little bully does not hassle Geezer too much.

Hi, Kimmer. Yes, moving is a royal pain! We have moved 12 times since 1967, 7 in the first 12 or so years, the last, a short one, in 1998. We are NOT moving again until they drag us kicking and screaming from the place. I am still reconstructing this house and have the LR and back bath to redo. Last is the back porch, which I plan on changing from a “yucky” looking area to a cool, CLEAN, area with the litter box away from the front and moved to the area beside the back door. This may involve relocating more “stuff” than Wayne would like, but such is life.

    Tina, how are you?

    Janet, how was Benjamin’s lecture?

    Hi to everyone.

Morning! How interesting where the term “A shot of whiskey” came from! I have never heard that story! Ugh on being up since 1 AM! Please do try and a sneak a nap in today :)

Lol Karen, what are fake lady bugs? Poor lonely Geezer :(

Bri got hit in the forehead with a softball last night and now has a huge knot on her head along with a nasty bruise. I was so proud of her, she only whimpered a little, shook it off, then got back to business! When she gets home from school I am going to have her hold an icepack on it. Didn't have time last night since it was so late. I am just SO worried about her getting hit in the glasses. UGH! I can't wait to get our insurance back after the stupid strike is over so I can get her the daily contacts. It feels like it will never end! I pulled out some of that ground chicken I grinded up. Not sure if I'm going to do burgers or meatballs. Will search around recipes here in a bit. Wishing everyone a great day :)

Just texted Michael about it and he said he is going to call the eye doctor and see if we can get a few trial pair of contacts to hold us over. All the businesses around us are doing favors for the people on strike.

Cool on a 'shot of whiskey' Joce. I laughed when I saw the thread title. I read it to Benjamin as well (he loves words and origins of words etc. and he thought that was awesome) My next thought was that I could actually use a shot of whiskey. LOLOLOL. And I don't even like whiskey! But....
you were absolutely right Dr. Joce.....I indeed do have Pneumonia again. Argh. My Dr. gave me a prescription for antibiotics but by the time we got back to the Drugstore from being downtown last night it was closed. I'll go over there in an hour or so and take one with my lunch. :) I have a follow up appointment on Friday. Benjamin's talk went wonderfully last night and it was a lot of fun to go see him in action. He was greeted with a hero's welcome and held his audience in rapt attention for two hours. It was really nice. I enjoyed his Power point presentation and he'd included pictures of the Taiwanese Esperanto Society some of which Jim and I had met when we were there in April. We went to the East India Company on Somerset for dinner. It was awesome and Benj said he was in heaven. OH NO on forgetting to take the necessary amount of pain killers. Poor you. Maybe you should join me in that shot of whiskey....pain killer for both of us! :) Did you make your blueberry muffins yesterday?
Morning Karen. We get those weird ladybug infestations sometimes too and it's the craziest thing. I don't know that we've had it in our house but Jim's Dad's cottage used to have a zillion. That's a lot of times to move homes.
Hi Michelle. Bri was quite a trooper alright. Poor thing. I've probably recommend this ground chicken/turkey recipe to you before but...
Turkey Club Burgers With Bacon And Swiss Cheese
and I also love a Pork Larb (or Chicken or Turkey Larb). I have a good recipe for that too if you want Thai food.
Good idea of Michael's to get Bri some trial contacts!
Apart from being diagnosed with Pneumonia I had a really nice day yesterday. :) Popped in to my Girlfriend's Flower shop where I usually help this time of year for the upcoming Valentine's Day festivities. Benjamin was greeted with big hello's and hugs and also to my old Hardware store where that was repeated as well. Brought him over to "Bridgehead" ....his fave old coffee haunt for a cappucino, then dinner then Ottawa U for his talk.
And here's big news! THE HEAT PUMP SERVICE GUY IS HERE! LOLOLOLOLOL. Goodness knows what will come of it. Jim is going to stay here with him and I'm going to bring Benj into town to bop around and go out for lunch somewhere fun although we haven't decided where yet.
HOLY BUSY RICK AND MARIE! Good luck to you guys today!
Holy Smokes on the subway system being closed down Laurie. That's crazy. Was it yesterday that Frank was going to see the Dr. again? And if so, how did that go?
Hugs Kimmer. I hope you are pleased with your new move? Sorry to hear of the death in the family. My condolences. Sending good, happy , healing thoughts to you....and restful ones too.

Michelle, fake lady bugs are Japanese Beatles - they look like lady bugs but are more orange in color and the darn things BITE! I am surprised to see them so early in the year. Have no idea how they got into the sun room but we sill have to track down the entry and Spray, Spray, Spray! One year I vacuumed a zillion of them in the bedroom, since we got new windows haven't seen any more and hope they stay away. They are icky.

Re-read the post, from yesterday. Kimmer, so sorry about the death in your family. 19 is so young! A 19 year old boy from a nearby town was killed in a car accident about a week ago. The fire dept. there is having a benefit Saturday to raise money for the family. I am not sure if he was a volunteer firefighter or not.

Michelle, do they make the kids wear helmets in softball? No fun getting hit, so good it did not hit her glasses. The contacts should help, I would think. She sounds like a good team player!

Janet - we are supposed to get our wood burning insert this week but I am not holding my breath. Probably not until next week. That will be so nice! Glad the presentation went well. Boo on getting pneumonia again. No fun. Antibiotics should help.

I have some Italian potato corn chowder on the stove. Thought about putting it on GR but it is close to the other potato soup recipe and there are already a ton of them available. I didn't eat breakfast this morning so the sample-to-see-if-needs-seasoning tasted good. Still have two other recipes to add -- maybe some day when I find time - LOL.

Poor Briauna, Michelle:( Did or does she have a headache from it? Gee I hope the strike doesn't last long, I hadn't thought of you losing your Health Insurance as well. I guess that makes sense when I think about it now. Nice all the businesses are pitching in doing favours for you. I hope they can get a few trial pairs for her to see how she likes them.

Karen, Those Japanese Beatles were apparently another one of those things they released a few years ago to control commercial crops. I have been in many houses who had them crawling all over more so white houses for some reason? Sometimes I see a few of them on our patio door and yes those suckers can BITE! I haven't seen a real red Ladybug in quite some time and I wonder if the Japanese Beatles are eating them too?

Janet, Yes get those antibiotics ASAP! I am sure your doctor said to take it easy and get LOTS OF REST as well. Pneumonia can hit you like a ton of bricks and can still be fatal. I remember you were on an inhaler thingy for quite a long time the first time you had it. JUST BE CAREFUL PLEASE! Enough said! I am delighted Ben did such a good talk and has been well received by all. Can I say you must be BEAMING WITH PRIDE. Also awesome he enjoyed his dinner so much too! LOLROFL My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw that the HEAT PUMP GUY IS THERE!!! LOL I would HOGTIE and keep him locked up somewhere like a closet to make sure it is finally fixed:)
Please Take Good Care of yourself and don't be out and about for too long!

I did make those blueberry muffins yesterday and I might have one as a dessert for my lunch. After all the talk about egg salad sandwiches the other day I think that is what I will have for lunch. I still haven't decided what we are going to have for dinner!

Etimology of 'shot of whiskey" is neat. Haha on not drinking ine, Joce.
Glad Benjamin's presentation went so beautifully. Get those antibiotics, pneumonia is nothing to ignore. Busy busy family, get some rest in there Janet.
Michelle, there is a natural remedy for bruising. Arnica. I gave some to Olivia when she took a baseball bat swing to her forehead durung a pinata game. it is awesoe for making the bruise heal,
Marie, you guys are swamped. Good to know that a stellar reputation equals a fair return.
    Take care, dear.
Karen, I feel out of sorts a bit like Geezer, I suppose. That was a lot of moving in a dew years. Yikes, I dread the amount of work ahead.
Laurie, you get boots that fit and then the snow stops. The mounds of snow are unreal.
Ummmm, I want egg salad! trouble is, no eggs.
Kimmer, honey, so sorry to hear about your loss. And the move on top of it would cause so much stress. Take care of yourself.

I keep finding stuff in weird places, a pack of cigarettes behind the toilet paper. a bottle of whiskey behind the box of cereal, wine glasses on the work bench. Little reminders of Fred.
I'm exhausted and I have done nothing but paperwork for days. I did see Angie and I have multicolored polka dot nails. She got on me for how bad and thin my skin has become. Not enough water, my hands have aged fifteen years.

Supper is I don't care. I'll scrounge something out of what is in the pantry.

I've never been bitten by one of those fake lady bugs but any type of bug in mass concentration is just oogey. What makes the potato corn chowder Italian Karen? Certain herbs? A tomato base? Re: deciding whether or not to put a recipe in GR or not (and I may have already mentioned this to you. CRAFT)....bottom line, IMHO, is if you want to put the recipe in put it in. I don't care if it is exactly the same as another recipe that is already in GR or not or whatever.....I use GR as a collection station for my favourite recipes. I don't care if there are similar ones on here. I don't want the similar ones, I want my one and I want it in a spot where I keep the majority of my recipes.
Thanks Joce. I did grab the anti-biotics and I had one with my lunch. I'll take another with dinner. And I do know I pushed it too hard today. I'm exhausted. But Benjamin is only here for a short while and no way in heck is pneumonia making me miss out on a second of it. I realize how serious it can be. And I know I'm being a bit reckless. But I sure did have a nice day today. And now I've parked myself in front of the fire with a glass of wine. And no, I didn't closely read the instructions to see if I'm allowed wine with my antibiotics but I don't care one way or the other. :) Bad eh? :) I'm still on that stupid puffer from the last bout. Shaking head. Thanks for being so concerned about me though. I do seriously appreciate the thought. :) LOL @ hog tieing the Heat Pump service guy. He is so nice and so good at his job. The bad thing is that there is only one of him. They need to make ten more like him. Yum on egg salad. Now you guys are going to have me craving that too.
Good to see you check in Tina. My Dad died of Prostate cancer and knew he only had a certain amount of time left. So he actually wrote notes on the garage wall or the inside of the dryer door with instructions on things he was worried Mom might not remember to do or things she might have trouble doing on her own. I'd view these little reminders of Fred like 'hello's'. You know he's always there and always will be. Hope you're almost done the paperwork. Nice on the nails. I shall make you your coconut milk/fish sauce concoction with a good 'shot' of sriracha and a nice poached egg on toast (forget if you like poached eggs?) and send it to you virtually. Breathe. You're doing good.
I'm making Cedar Planked salmon for dinner this evening. With asparagus and roasted red peppers on the side. Jim and Benj are out for a Hot Tub. I'm behaving myself and having a sit down. :)

Tina, a scrounge from the pantry supper can be interesting, even quite tasty! A can of (groan) tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich, tuna salad, pork and beans (my fav.) and a kosher hot dog (no organ meats), or a smoked kielbasa sound quite good. I try to keep thin deli sliced smoked ham on hand for such occasions.

You will have days when you don't want to bother to fix anything - just be sure to keep the pantry stocked with easy stuff, even canned soups are better than junk food or nothing. I'm bad at drinking enough water, so I can't yell at you about that. But Angie is right. You do need to get fluids in you. My hands have been old looking for years - I gave up a long time ago. Love me, love my wrinkles, that is my motto.
Geezer will come around. He is extra lovey and wants to be picked up -- all 16 pounds - and cuddled. I think you would like the beast. So far he allows no one but me to hold him. Even Wayne's buddy, who feeds them when we are gone, never sees more than a retreating flash of gray! I don't envy you the paperwork. I hate it. If I had my way I would have X number of dollars put in a special account every month and automatic withdrawing to pay all bills, because I'd sure forget something! Come to think of it, that is exactly what I do except for one bill, that doesn't do automatic payments. I arranged for it to be due the 29th so I would not forget to send it in on time by telling myself it is due on the 5th. Aargh!

Have to go. We are stopping by to take daughter out to supper, and I need a quick shower to become humanoid again. Wayne has been working outside, so he will also. Power Ball is 458 million - maybe our one ticket will be it - Bwahahahaha!

    Have a nice evening.

Liv called. She is coming to the rescue. Smoking J's brisket sandwiches with jalapeno mac and cheese. Powerball tickets, one each and a quart of lemonade. I was ready to open a can of chowder with crackers and ham salad. She is feeling guilty for leaving me alone for a week.

I found a house on the market today that is nearly perfect. Dead end street, fenced yard, 2 bed/2bath, tiled sun room and screened porch. one car garage. Under 98k. If the insurance money was here I would be excited, that paperwork is maddening.

Janet don't fool around with the pneumonia.......rest.

SP Janet. We just got back from taking our daughter out to eat and I saw your post, which was NOT there when I posted earlier. I'm sure I hit the refresh button, too. The glass of wine does sound good. The Italian 4 cheese mix used in the chowder gave the recipe its name. Mainly because I couldn't think of anything else to call it. LOL. That makes 3 I should really add. 2 have pictures to go with. I recorded them on a word processing document so they are easy to add.

Being semi-literate at abbreviations,I must ask, what is CRAFT?

Tina, so glad Olivia is coming over - Smoking J's brisket sandwiches with jalapeno mac and cheese sounds wonderful. Good luck on the house. Hope the home inspection goes well and it is yours.
