Company's Coming Thursday!

Good Morning Everybody! Got a call last night from JIm's Aunt and Uncle who are from Mississauga. They are in Montreal and had spent the Thanksgiving Weekend with their son and his family and they're driving back home through Ottawa today and wanted to pop in and visit. They are Jim's favourite Aunt and Uncle so we invited them to stay for dinner and overnight and then head back home tomorrow. Which is all fine and good but of course I was in a slight dither last night trying to think of what I could make them to eat! :)
    So....I'm going with
Butternut Squash Soup With Caramelized Apples
(which I already have down in the freezer)
    Mixed Greens With Parmesan Crisps
    Chalet Style Chicken
    and
    Twice Baked Spinach Potatoes
And....I have to do a thorough cleaning of the house...and.....they are arriving early afternoon. LOL!
Joce, did Den arrive home safe and sound and have a good trip? How was your Turkey Mornay? I quite enjoyed the Chicken Mornay. I used thighs instead of breasts and I think breasts would have worked out better. The sauce was lovely. And the best part was that I was able to totally make it up ahead of time and then just toss it into the oven when I was ready.
Lori, where were you yesterday? Hope it doesn't involve DL.
Neat that your Tattoo artist is on TV Tina. The Elimination Challenge is pretty funny! Your dinner sounded good.
Welcome back Dahlia! Glad to hear you had a nice trip.
Have to make a run to the store for some potatoes and grapes before Jim heads to work. AND I NEED A CUP OF COFFEE! :)
    Have a great day everyone!
Pic below another one I took this weekend at the cottage.

Aw, TJ had to leave the show because he slipped another disc in his spine doing the quick challenge. He was in the army for five years. He was hurt when a tank blew up with him inside of it. He suffers constant back pain. His parlor is called "Foolish Pride"

Two people got fired from the call center yesterday for not doing their jobs while on "retention". There will only be five people handling gold calls after I am gone. They are going to have a rough four weeks. The Gold team ideally has 12 agents.

I'm making Italian salad for supper, roasted peppers, grilled eggplant, grilled zucchini, mozzarella cheese, chopped artichokes, romaine lettuce and balsamic vinegar. Fred gets a meat load sandwich. He has to pack, fix his medications, put up the new gate for the front entry way. Fix my desk drawer that fell apart. Get a haircut. Let's see if he can stay awake for all that activity.

Janet, you are WONDER woman. I'd be in a panic mode with unexpected "early" guests. However, it is wonderful to have a family connection renewed. your menu sounds delicious. I'd love that soup.

Off to work, I'm training my replacements via phone conference today. This should be fun.

    Good Morning!
Thanks for missing me yesterday, Janet. I was just busy at work then busy at home. DL has been nice for a while now...watch out folks...a storm's a brewin'! LOL Your dinner sounds fantastic! I'm so glad you brought that salad back up! We would love that...on my menu this weekend. I have some steaks in the freezer to use, that would make a really nice meal with a baked tater. So nice that Jim's favorite aunt and uncle are coming to visit! I would be a wreck trying to get everything done...but I'm sure you will pull it off without a hitch. Enjoy your time with them! How did the tree cutting adventure go?

Hey Tina! WOW! If they'd fired them for not doing their jobs a long time ago, and hired some people who WOULD do their jobs they might not be closing!! *rolling eyes* But, I can see them not wanting to pay severance packages to them, too. Soooooo glad that you are outta there and on to bigger and better things! When does Fred leave? Is someone traveling with him, to help him find his connections and get thru security etc? I'm sure he is beyond excited! It's so nice that his friends are helping make this possible! You reap what you sew, and you and he have been so good to so many for so long...it's your turn! Didn't he drive a van for a charitable organization as a volunteer for a while? I don't know what I'm thinking of...maybe I dreamed it...CRAFT!!
    Is tomorrow your last day?

I spoke to the recruiter who called me, and we are meeting one day next week...the position she is recruiting for is a golden opportunity for me.....I have taken jobs beneath my experience level for so many years now...this would use all of my best skills with a new challenge, too, and pay me for it..(well, from what I understand from our phone conversation anyway)..I hope I can recall enough to get thru all the interviews! lol One step at a time, I have to pass with her first. : ) Guess I will be doing some reading this weekend to brush up on interview skills, etc. Let's hope the streak of good luck in here continues......

I am compeletely and totally clueless about dinner. We got a subway last night, and nothing has been thawed for tonight...no leftovers to speak of. Hmmmmm......

Have a great day! Hey to all not here yet! Glad you made it back safely Dahlia, I have been wondering about Marie, too! Think I will text Donna later and check on her.

Careful Janet, treating them that well they may never leave. Oh hold it... that's what I would do not real people LOL

The Warm Wheat Berries with Tuna, Fennel and Olives salad does sound yummy Tina. I am not familiar with wheat berries and have to look that up.

Hope the interviews go well Lori very exciting to have such possibilities in front of you.

Didn't do the Cowgirl Burritos but tonight for sure. Ended up fixing pork BBQ sandwich for Dad from the left-over pork roast done Southern style with Sweet Vidalia Onion Slaw on top. He had never had it that way before and enjoyed it. We just had scrounge night at our place.

Sorry to hear about TJ's back. Fred has a busy day today. I'm guessing the fence is all finished. Did I miss that? CRAFT! :) When does he leave? And just a little mention...I do hope you are eating enough Tina. Honestly. Don't just, just eat salads. You need more for strength! Hope it goes well with the training. You must be just so happy to be out of there! :)
Hi Lori! The tree cutting went very well. Jim ended up taking down two dead spruce and didn't have any troubles. He hauled away the cut branches and piled up the wood as we can use it in the fire place next year. OHHHHHHH! I am so excited for you with this upcoming interview. WOW! That's so awesome. You'll do wonderfully. You be sure to let us know which day it's on so we can do the vibe thing. :) The good luck is rollin'. I can feel it! Say 'hi' to Donna from us!!!!!! Thanks on the pix comments. :) It's very pretty here this time of year I must admit.
I'm not familiar with wheat berries either Laura but I have heard of them. I'd love one of those BBQ Pork sandwiches you made up for your Dad! Sounds amazing!

Janet, No doubt you will pull off everything perfectly for Jim’s Aunt and Uncle. You have a great menu put together for any guest. The Turkey Mornay was O.K. but I still prefer it with chicken breast better any day! Den arrived home safe and is now officially in his mind on vacation. That is really cool about the Raffle tickets for Bigwin it would be just awesome to win a trip like that!

Tina, Have fun training your replacements today. When do you start your new job? Good luck to Fred getting all those things done today that is an overloaded list for anyone!

Lori, YAHOO!!! YA BA DAB BA DO!!! The very best of luck to you!!!

    Laura, Have a great day!

    Dahlia, Welcome home.

We will have pork chops for dinner sides I am not sure of yet. We are just going to have a nice relaxing day.

    Have a great day everyone!

Laura, that bbq sandwich you fixed Dad sounds fantastic! I need to make some bbq...and I need to try that slaw!! The burritos sound great, too...not sure how I missed that one.

Joce, a nice relaxing day sounds wonderful! Enjoy!

So dinner will be a mad scientist experiment I have been thinking about. Bryan is off...I usually like to do those when he's not around...but...we will see. Maybe I will have time to get my plan formulated while I'm at work today...lol...unless they want me to actually WORK!

    Good afternoon everyone!

Janet, your menu for this evening sounds wonderful! Best of luck getting everything in order quickly for your guests. Your photos are just lovely!

Tina, your dinner salad sounds great! Sorry to hear that about TJ but cool he got on and got more exposure even just for a short stint on the show.

Lori, I know what you mean about not wanting to talk about stuff so as not to jinx it but its good to have other people sending positive thoughts & vibes out for you so just reveal enough info to get those ;-) Best of luck to you! I'm curious about your mad science experiment.

Laura, yum on both the burritos and bbq pork sandwiches!

Joce, enjoy your time in vacation mode with Den!

I just got great news!!! Kris got a new job! He was contacted by a recruiter via one of the job sites much like Lori and has been going through a series of phone interviews over the course of the past few weeks. Someone flew out to meet him and interview him face to face on Tuesday and show him the store he'll be running. I'm not so clear on the details but what I do know is that it is the first store of its kind in Michigan, a rent-to-own car dealership, and they perform quite well in other states. He will be the store manager which is going to be wonderful as he can apply all of the knowledge and skills he's developed over the past decade. We are all over the moon!!! Not sure when he'll start or when he'll give notice to his current employer. He has been very unhappy there as he does not get compensated appropriately for the amount of work he does and money he brings in so the timing couldn't be better! It seems just as bad things happen in chains, good things do to. I'm hoping the roll continues for all of you and for me too ;-) I haven't mentioned this b/c like Lori, I don't want to jinx it, but.... I'm going to Chicago next Saturday to audition for Master Chef. I applied online and was contacted within 10 hours by a casting producer. We've corresponded a bit through email and I'm excited and nervous all at the same time. I have NO idea what I will prepare as my dish to try to win a place on the show. I have to put some time & energy into figuring that out and perfecting it if need-be over the next week. I have no clue what we'll have for dinner this evening. I need to take inventory of the fridge & pantry and go from there. Hope you're all having a great day!

LOVE your avatar Joce! :) I just, just finished the housework and gobbled down some leftover Chicken Mornay for lunch. Yum! :) The potatoes are done so all I really have left to do is the salad and chicken. Porkchops sound good for tonights dinner. Enjoy your relaxing day.
You don't have to say a thing Lori...I'll just start sending positive major good vibes starting first thing Monday morning and keep it up until I hear I can stop! :)
Thanks Dahlia! And CONGRATS to Kris! Wow....the good job vibes are just bouncing around here aren't they! That's great! :) Kris's job sounds awesome. Managing his own store! What a great opportunity for him! And wow to you too Dahlia! Master Chef! I'm going to have to go google that as I don't think I've ever seen it and am not familiar with the premise. How exciting for you! I have switched my positive vibe machine into overdrive to split between you and Lori!
    How awesome for everyone! :)

So with this signature dish that you have to make Dahlia....what are the parameters? Does it have to be a main? Can you have a side....say...something and biscuits (I'm thinking your Cheddar Biscuits that have been sooooo popular). And how does it work. Do you have to prepare the signature dish there? And then how long between the time they say yes to your signature dish and the time you start the competition? Pretty exciting stuff alright! :)

Janet, I really don't know as many details as I should!! I don't think the dish has to be a main and one can definitely present an entree with sides or even an appetizer or dessert. The competitors prepare/cook their dish 5 minutes shy of being done, then bring it into the judges and complete it, plate it, all the while being asked questions and basically interviewed by the judges. They taste & critique it right in front of you and then decide whether you will be accepted as a finalist or not. I'm not sure of the timeline as far as how soon after the audition the competition will begin. Crazy!!! Thanks for the idea on the biscuits. The only concern I have is that I use the Bisquik mix but I'm sure I can easily find out how to make the baking mix from scratch.. Here are some suggestions from my family: my sister suggested Sweet And Sour Brisket, I know it doesn't look pretty in the pic but it is freakishly good and easy. Though I don't know how much prep time I'll be given. My aunt was just introduced to my cooking this visit and she went loopy for Roasted Beet Salad With Mint and everyone loves Zucchini Leek Pancakes Latkes (both of those dishes I did over for them this week after the warm reception last time). Apricot Dijon Chicken keeps popping into my head b/c it looks elegant but is simple and has great balance of flavors. AHhhh!!! I don't know what to do! (I typed "pooping into my head" at first and sent myself into hysterics.)

Dahlia, Wow now that is a brain cruncher for sure! I am in love with Apple Cider Chicken what a nice fresh different thing to do with chicken! I can definitely see it with an unusual side something with cheese! What dishes do you make all the time and everyone requests from you time and time again that you have perfected? Also do you know who the judges will be? LOL I just almost missed your last post!
    These are all excellent choices
    Sweet And Sour Brisket

    Roasted Beet Salad With Mint

    Zucchini Leek Pancakes Latkes

    Apricot Dijon Chicken

LOL Just keep cooking and having everyone test things you make all the time!!!

Just sifting through your hundreds of posts!!!
So far these are standing out also! And I have only been through a few pages!!!

    Balsamic Chicken

    Zucchini Boats Stuffed With Shrimp

    Moroccan Chicken Couscous Soup

    Lemon Ricotta Cookies

Some how you are going to have to incorporate those lemon ricotta cookies! Would they go along side anything on a plate or use them for crumbles?

WOW Dahlia! That's awesome! I'd be a bundle of nerves. What fun, though. So, I guess you cook it there...wonder what the time would be between the time you cook it within 5 min of being done and the actual finshing of the cooking / judging? If it's very long at all it could mean disaster for a biscuit or any other bread from scratch. Just a thought. I think I'd think about the presentation and how it looks on the plate, how comfortable you are with it (pick something you can do with your eyes closed), and something creative, in an out of the box kind of way, and most of all tastes excellent! WOW. I know you can do it. You have several recipes like that. : ) Once you know all the details as far as prep time, etc, it will help you narrow it down.

Janet, here you go...you can watch full episodes here...you really need to!
    http://www.fox.com/masterchef/
Gordon Ramsey is one of the judges, and you may recognize the others, too. If you've never seen it, watch an episode or two online to see what she's in for.

VERY VERY impressive to have been chosen, Dahlia! Best of luck to you!!! I can't wait to live vicariously through you on this one! : )

Thanks for all the vibes, everyone! First thing I have to do is hone the bargain hunting antennae for an interview worthy outfit. We are very casual here. I need something polished and professional. That looks like it's quality instead of KMart. Oy Vey. It will be worth the investment if I get the job...but I need a bargain. lol

And a BIG WHOOHOOO to Kris!! That's fantastic! I'm happy for you both, Dahlia.

Interesting about a rent to own car place. I had never heard of that before.

Took Dad out for a walk around the corner back to my place. Such a short distance but he was so nervous he wouldn't make it. He did great and I brought him in the house made him popcorn and we watched the first episode of TinMan together. Afraid both of us did some snoozing but at least it was on Netflix so I just backed it up.

Vibrations all around, positive energy and successful interviews!!
My last day at Broder is tomorrow and my first day at PSCU is Monday.

Salad will have bit of mozzarella for my protein. I'm doing okay. Just wish I could sleep better these days. Once training is over, I'll get back in the swing of things.

Yeah!!! Lori!!!!!! Hooray! Yes, Fred has done tons of volunteer work for Camp Redbird as well as the Coalition for the Homeless when he was at Boley. He chaffeured on his own time and gas.
Yeah, for Kris and Dahlia!!! What a lovely bunch of news to read about!
Laura...hugs to you for taking good care of Dad. You are a special lady.
Janet, have fun with your lovely menu and guests.
Joce, Fred leaves in the a.m., non stop flight. Liv is boarding him and Bobbie and Jan are picking him, reverse the process on Monday.

I have two more resumes to polish up for other Broder agents. Best get busy. I'm kind of tired and my eyes are a little misty because I had to say good bye to too many people today. My usual band of suspects, errrr, I mean, clients hate the agents in Middleboro, said they are "TO BY THE BOOK" and "Unfriendly". They are going to stop calling in their orders and just order on the web because they don't want to talk to anyone else but us Southern gals with honeyed voices.

You know to quote the venerable WC Fields, famous for his low opinion of Philadelphia and in honor of Fred's trip to the same stellar environs....."A man has got to believe in something, and I believe, I will have another drink." one neat scotch on the rocks please.

    Hugs to all. Manana~ toodaloo!

Joce, thank you so much for your suggestions! I was thinking about those cookies, too :-)
Lori, wishing you luck in finding a great outfit for your interview.

Laura, glad you and dad had a nice walk and afternoon nap.

Marie, hope you get to stop in and chat some more soon and your headache disappears!!

Tina, hope you get some good sleep tonight.

Laurie, hope you have a busier day at work tomorrow.

I gathered more useful info on the FAQ page for the competition. I won't be able to prepare food on site, but will have to have it already made up and ready to plate. This is limiting in that I'll want to choose something(s) that will stand up well to transporting and possible lonnngggg day of waiting for my turn to present. This also brings up the issue of how to transport but I'll work it all out. Thank you all for the congrats, good luck vibes & wishes!! It means a lot to have your support! Pulled beef sandwiches with baked fries (Alexia from a bag) for dinner.

Oh Tina...I'm sure leaving is bittersweet. Hugs for the days ahead. Hope you enjoyed that Scotch. So Fred is all set...that's fantastic. He certainly deserves it...it's been a Hell of a few years and he has lost so much...to be able to reclaim that bit on indepedence and rekindle such deep long lasting friendships...that's amazing!! I can only imagine how good that might be for him!! Hugs for Freddie too!! Does he have his hawaiian shirts packed? lol The Homeless thing is what I''m remembering...YAY! I'm not completely crazy!! Your salad sounds great!

Dahlia, you will figure it all out. Might be easier in the long run to cook in your own kitchen! Rooting for you.

HI MARIE!!! Hope that headache goes away soon!! Glad the business is thriving.

Mad Science experiment successful, and I even got a pic! Posting tomorrow. Off to watch football for a min before I hit the hay! GO STEELERS! GO BIG BEN!!!
