Friday the 13th!

Good Morning Everyone! A Full Moon last night and then Friday the 13th today! Witchy! :)

Sounds like your household is feeling better Kimmer. Good to hear! Cheeseburgers and potato salad sound awesome. I always think of that as 'summer food' and part way through winter when we haven't had it for a long time, I get a major craving. That may be happening now. :)

Am trying two new recipes for dinner this evening which may be a mistake considering the date. :) Braised Duck breast in Burgandy red wine. (Although my wine is from South Africa I think, not France but the Duck won't know). :) And I'm going to make Manella's
    Manellas Mushroom Risotto
on the side and maybe a veggie tray. Bren reviewed the risotto this week and it looked so good and 'doable' that I'm going to give it a whirl.

Other than that, no big plans on the horizon. May go out for a walk. We're not supposed to get any more precipitation until Monday when they're forecasting a few snow flurries. We had a HUGE avalanche come off the living room roof while we were out yesterday. We have quite the snowbank in front of the picture window. Saw an Eagle flying way up high above the house this morning. So stunning!

    Wishing everyone a great day!

Morning Janet! Oh yeah, I didn't even realize it was Friday the 13th, time to search for the horror movies playing! That risotto does look amazing, can't wait to hear how it turns out for you! I've only had duck once at a restaurant, and liked it, but I have never cooked it, seems intimidating to me :P Enjoy your relaxing day!

Got the kids off to school and now I'm drinking my usual smoothie :) Will definitely get to the gym today considering I've skipped the last 3! Truck washing was on the agenda, but it's misting outside, so that may be out. I got 2 closets done yesterday, so I might tackle a few more. Maybe the coat closet and my bedroom closet? I'm on a roll :) Pulled out some chicken sausage that I got at Trader Joe's the other day. Not sure what I am going to do with it yet, maybe just slice it up and fry it and serve it with sides? Or I could pull out some chicken as well and do some chicken and sausage gumbo. No rice in the house though! Hhhmm, decisions, decisions :P Have a great day everyone!!!

It's still dark here this morning and the large bright moon is filling up my view out the window, amazing! I didn't realize it's also Friday the 13th! I love watching the full moon lower into the sky, one great thing about living in 'Sky Country' ;)

Hi Janet, I hope your duck recipe works out for you! I love Peking duck but that's the only way I've had it. MMmmm, I love risotto! Even though that recipe has mushrooms, it still looks and sounds so good!

Hi Michelle, do you use a protein powder in your smoothies? I need more protein in my diet and was considering a veggie one, like pea protein. I can't have soy, and I don't know if I want whey either? I thought I was doing ok by using greek yogurt and nut milk, (sometimes chia seeds or pepita's) but maybe I need more protein?
Wow, good for you on cleaning the closets, it's great to get on a roll! Have fun at the gym today. Yum on gumbo! You could serve it over toast or mashed taters? Or have a Cajun chicken pasta if you have gluten free noodles?

The kids are home today, thank goodness. It's been a hairy week driving in -30C to -40C with crazy winds and snow drifts. Cars were all over the roads and in ditches, getting stuck in snow drifts etc..I drove really, really slow. But if my car went over 30 km than I was sliding in circles! Pete finally got new snow tires on my car last night, hopefully that stops me from sliding everywhere! My anxiety and winter blues has really got to me this week, so I haven't been in a mood to type but have been reading everyday. Just call me Judy Moody this month, loll ;)
Dinner is soup of some sort, probably a minestrone.

    Have a great day everyone!

I've cooked roast ducks before Michelle, which is exactly like cooking a chicken or a turkey, but I've not cooked a duck breast before either and I too feel a little intimidated. I'm worried I'll overcook it and make it tough. The one I bought is almost a pound. It's a Magret, which means it's from a duck that was reared for foie gras. I feel guilty about that, but....
Wish me luck. :) Yum on your smoothie and good luck at the gym. Go you on the closets!

Your view sounds gorgeous Shona! Peking Duck is amazing! Love that stuff. I also love the BBQ duck you get in the Chinese restaurants. Yuck on your bad driving conditions! Glad to hear you got snow tires put on. I'm sure that will help a lot. Gentle hugs to you and hope you feel better soon.

I just ordered my new scanner from Amazon (plus a Squirrel shaped cookie cutter). Very excited. I got the one your daughter's boyfriend recommended Bren. Thanks again!

    Good morning.

Hope you feel better soon Shona. I don't know when the days start lengthening there, but am absolutely ready for more light and less dark. It is just below freezing here and we have an ice / freezing rain storm. Schools all closed in much of MO. Fort is essential personnel only. Sometimes they grant admin leave to workers and sometime they make them use their annual leave, don't know which it is this time but suspect the latter.....money being tight! Springfield has ice in the northern part, rain and/or clear skies in the southern. Brrr! on the -40C! Which is or so I have read, identical to -40F. Either way it is COLD! When do the kids start riding the bus?

Janet, I like duck...yum! But have no intention of fixing it. Agree he idea of foie grass is disgusting so I wouldn't want that either. My mom fixed goose once that, If I remember, is greasy unless prepared correctly, but that was years ago! Cool on the eagle sighting!

My closets need a thorough cleaning also, Michelle. As usual, you are way ahead of me and busy, busy, busy.

A.C. bolted outside this morning but came back soon, then Trouble took off outdoors. Both didn't stay very long , too much rain and cold. Fritz did fine, came in with his doggie jacket soaked and shook the water off beside me. Natch!

Second load of laundry going. I took advantage of the KMart specials, have a pair of stretch pants that may shrink but they are a bit larger than needed so should be no problem. Found two pairs of leather gloves....I was getting to the point where I wore my orange hunting gloves....ha ha! Got daughter a pair of pinkish gloves with bling on the back, they are ski gloves or so the tag says. She needs warm ones for driving to work so these should fit the bill. She loves pink, I don't. Wayne bought a workbench and tool sets of various types. Probably won't be back, but who knows!?

    Hoping no fire calls!

Electricity blinked off and on several times. Have the generator so am not really concerned, except that we might get called out to stand around and watch for fire around the site. That isn't too likely considering the weather....ha ha!

    Have a good day.

Thinking of you Linda, Marie, Tina, and all the MIA ODD'ers.

Jim just put an extension piece on the pole of my fly through feeder and put a pulley up for my 'squirrel' feeder so that the deer can't get to them. I went out and filled the feeders this morning and the deer appeared as soon as I came inside and licked them clean.
    This'll show 'em. :)

Ha ha on the deer. They seem to have an alarm sent for when the feeders are put out!

Just realized we SP'd up there Karen! :) Sounds like you got some good deals! Nice on the leather gloves! I don't like pink either. Fun that Wayne found a toolbench and a bunch more tools. :) Hope your power doesn't go out!

Jim has lit me a fire so I'm snuggled right close and I've started to read a new book a friend recommended.

The duck is still cause of concern. I prepped it as it has to marinate for two hours in red wine that has been boiled and mixed with mirepoix, carrots, celery and onion, but the veggies are pretty much raw. I was expecting to saute them first and then add them to the wine but that's not what the recipe says. Oh well....we'll see how it goes.

Good afternoon ladies. I to think of burgers and potato salad as summer food Janet. As soon as it warms up I get a craving for the salad.
Nice on the duck, I've never had just the breast though. My parents raised ducks, chickens, turkeys and geese. I really disliked those geese, they would peck at the back of our legs and it really hurt. LOL @ the duck won't know about the wine. That recipe makes a huge amount Janet, you may want to cute it back considerably.
Wow, those are crazy temps Shona. I have snow tires on the car and they do help. That view does sound amazing!!
I almost missed you there Michelle. Gumbo sounds awesome!! I have that on my bucket list of things that I want to make.
I love hearing about the adventures of your animals Karen. I can almost picture it. Fingers crossed that you don't loose power and that there are no fire calls. Sounds like you did very well at K-Mart!! I've finally started to use my Instant Pot and so far have loved it. I made perfect boiled/steamed eggs for pickled eggs and the shell was really easy to remove. I've also used the sear and slow cooker feature for chicken. I would like to try a pot roast and make chicken broth next.
No birds are coming to my feeders Janet, any tips? I asked for and received a new one for Christmas but no luck so far. I can imagine that you would be cold after 4K. It was nice that the sun was out but that wind feels like it's coming from Siberia.
It was a long week and I'm exhausted so dinner will be leftover pasta and meatballs maybe a salad if I can muster the energy. I have laundry backed up and the house needs a good cleaning but tomorrow is another day.

Hi Bren! That's very neat your parents raised ducks, chickens, turkeys and geese. My Mom raised chickens and she had one batch of turkeys I think. I have a friend who keeps ducks (Indian runners are one of the breeds I remember) just as pets. I don't think she'd appreciate knowing my dinner plan this evening. :) I'm halving the risotto recipe. Do you think I'm okay with that? Cool on you enjoying your Instant Pot. What kind of seed do you have in your feeders? The one that gets the best bang for the buck is black oiled sunflower. I don't bother with the mixed stuff as the birds throw the majority of it on the ground. I'm not getting a ton of birds at my feeders but a good assortment. I count my birds twice a week and send the info to Cornell University for their Bird Studies. I've been doing it for years. It's called "Project Feederwatch". You enter your tallies online and it puts them in neat graphs and such so you can see your action. You are so right in that the wind feels like it's coming from Siberia! Your dinner sounds perfect. Do you have to work tomorrow?

We also had pigs, cows and a bull, horses and a pony or two. My father brought home any horse or pony that had been neglected and nursed them back to health, they were unsellable before.
Project Feederwatch sounds so cool, good for you. I think that it's the mixed stuff, great to know about the black oiled sunflower...I'll get some of that.
It's probably too late but the last time that I made it I used 3/4 cup of the rice and it was still too much for the two of us. Keep in mind that you will probably still use close to the same amount of broth. I used almost a whole carton.

Wow! Your family had a good roster of animals! :) My Dad raised pigs and I had cousins who raised cows. You caught me in time for the risotto Bren. I'll do 3/4 cup or less then. Thx.

    Hi Bren!

Cool on the different poultry you had as a kid. My grandparents had chickens but I can't recall if there were any turkeys. We have a few chickens and they are goofy as can be.

If power goes the. Generator will kick on and we have enough propane for a while.

We just got called out. Bye.

Oh dear on a Fire Call Karen. All the power to you and Wayne for volunteering. It sounds like a lot of work and seems also to occur at the least favourable times. But thankfully there are people like you to do it!

    Back home!

We had a medical call on a back, dirt, probably non-maintained road. Trees dangled over the road and we plowed through ice covered branches that were bent three feet from the ground. A huge tree was down and they had to go miles around to get there. Thank goodness the main was just wet so it was easy driving until we reached the dirt road. Had to drive over trees and saw branches (not me....ha ha) to get through.

Time to sit back and relax. I was thinking of fixing something myself but threw a Schwanns meal in the oven. Fire is going and I Hope there are not any more calls.

    Have a nice evening.

Hope the person was okay Karen! I think Schwann's is the way to go.

Unfortunately the duck was a dud. :( But the risotto was lovely. I'll totally make it again. You win some, you lose some.

Gonna rent a Pay-per-vu movie. "Scully" with Tom Hanks.
