Friday's Flowers....

  • chuckieb 7 years ago
    Good Morning Everyone! TGIF!

As I mentioned last night, I got all my urns, barrels and planters planted with annuals yesterday afternoon. They always look so small at the beginning but lovely and full by fall. There were some gorgeous flowers at my favourite Garden center but some of them are atroiciously priced. And I'm talking a smallish plant, an annual, being $59.99 and up! All it would take is one little squirrel to break it off at the base and what could you do? Pic below is just one of the arrangements they had made up to give you ideas. I thought it was neat and different but again that fuzzy green thing was quite pricey. $20 maybe? I can't remember, and they have way more than just one planted in there!

I'm in pretty good shape for company this evening. Don't have to do too much house cleaning since we just did it on Sunday/Monday. I'll do a quick refresher this morning. Need to do a bit more lawn mowing and then prep dinner. Which will be....

    Salmon With Avocado Lime Salsa
    Grilled Asparagus With Margarita Butter
    a veggie platter with
    Heinz 57 Dip
    Twice Baked Spinach Potatoes
and those little fruit sorbets we've been flogging for dessert lately
    http://islandwaysorbet.com/#header
with sliced mango on the side.

I also will put out a tray of cheese, crackers and some nice salami I picked up for appys.

The 'One Ingredient Short Fairy" did visit of course. Unwelcome!!!! Forgot to buy regular cheddar cheese for the twice baked potatoes. Will have to make a run. LOL.

    Wishing everyone a great Friday!

Good Morning All! Hope everyone has a great Friday!

Nice plants Janet and WOW on the prices of some. That's crazy! Dinner menu looks fantastic. I'm sure your guests will love it!

Hope your plumber was able to successfully install your outside taps Joce. I so wish when they build houses that they would be them with water taps on all sides. Don’t understand why they don’t. Those and electrical outlets. Yum on the Pizza!

That’s great Sophia was open to trying new foods and found that she DOES like something new Shona. I bet too you are busy with your kitchen reno … almost done, right? Yea on the rain and hoping you get more. That stinks about the air quality being so bad from the fires that breathing is difficult. Has the air cleared up some from the rain?

Congrats on becoming an Aunt Michelle! and too funny about sneaking Caiden pineapple just to get him to try it (lol!).

Ouch on Wayne’s trip Karen. As they say “no good deed goes unpunished”. Glad he is ok. I had a very small scratch on the bumper of my car. DH washed the area for me the other day and I filled it in with the touch up paint. After it dried DH wanted to buff it over with some compounding wax to smooth and blend it in. It’s a liquid wax and because it was stored in the garage it must have built up pressure (our garage does get hot and we usually don’t store a lot of things in it) and when he opened the bottle it exploded … it went everywhere including his eye. Thank God he had glasses on so only a little of the wax went into one of his eyes.

Janet, Joce, and Shona, I wish I had all your dandelions. My friend from PA has to send me some for my bunny. She is also sending me seeds so I can pot some in planters for my bunny. I should be receiving my stash today.

DH has a chiro appointment this a.m. and then when he’s done we’ll get something to eat and later go to the gym. I had pulled out BLSL Chix breast for dinner the other night but never got around to cooking them, change of plans, so I’ll grill them tonight.
My lye came in so I was able to make a batch of soap last night … yea … I blended lemon and orange for a citrus scent. Colored half of it yellow and swirled it with the natural color of the soap itself. I’ll unmold it later and see how it turned out. I used a milk base instead of water. Wanted a something “fresh” for a change. Still need to make a batch and use the Wildflower Honey scent ... I'm just not sure of it which is why I'm hesitating, but nothing ventured nothing gained ... right?

    Have fun today!!!

Oh my goodness on your hubby's eye with the wax. That's scary!! LOL @ the dandelions. The city used to spray them in the public areas but don't anymore and I do admit they look very sunny and cheerful! :) Good luck to your hubby on his Chiro appointment. Yum on grilled Chix. :) NICE on your soap. A very fun project.

One of my old chums from way back when I lived in B.C. has just landed in London. She and her 80 yr. old mother are doing a walking tour of the Costwolds and walking up to 14 km. a day. I'm so envious of them and think her Mom absolutely rocks.

I also find some things in the garden centres are outrageously priced, Janet. I just steer away from them and look for the plants I want instead. Your dinner tonight sounds fantastic as usual. I am jealous of your friends going to the Cotwolds it is so awesome there!
Yes, they did come and put the taps in and I couldn't believe how fast they did it, Linda. Oh, my on the bottle exploding and getting into your HB's eye! He was very lucky. Glad you were finally able to finish making your soap.
Today I am waiting on a flooring fellow to give me an estimate on the kitchen and one bathroom floor. They are old linoleum and have been driving me crazy since we first moved in. I am not sure what is for dinner tonight but it is going up to 80 F so it will be something on the BBQ. I know Den will have a rib eye steak and oven fries. No clue yet what I am going to have.
    Wishing everyone a wonderful day!

Wow on flower prices Janet. I bought the $1.98 6 pack for marigolds the flower bed, Well, did buy a larger geranium and strawberries and sme other varieties for the hanging plants and two mosquito plants at 14.95 at Lowes to set in the Gazebo....they are frost sensitive and will have to come in by fall. But they supposedly deter mosquitoes! My oregano is flourishing and the sage took off also...on the side that gets sun. The shady side has a s raggedy lavender plant since the other one didn't come up this spring and the area is nut sunny enough for herbs, I guess. Three rhubarb plants are in containers on the cement pad outside the bedroom.....one root yet to plant ant it will likely be in another container because there has been no place prepared for rhubarb. Sigh!

Linda, it must not be a good day for husband injuries. Ha! Hope his eye is okay. I guess Florida is not the place for me....the heat is oppressive. It gets hot here but usually just a month or so, then we are back to moderate temps. Dandelions are pretty little weeds. One of my uncles worked for NASA and whenever a space shot went up his relatives couldn't reach him by phone...my aunt was not allowed to say where he was. That is the sum total of my knowledge about him, but the reason I mentioned it was that he wanted dandelion greens so he transplanted some to his yard so he could have his favorite dish.

It is sprinkling outside and my flowerbeds are waiting to be weeded and the rest of the plants put in. I went with the various color marigolds and one packet of moss rose just because I like them. Doubt if the garden will be ready this year so did not buy any tomatoes or peppers.

Got to go. Have a good day.

They were selling Mosquito plants/citronella at our garden centres too Karen. My best value purchase for flowers was at Costco where I got 24 nice sized white petunias for $9.99. I believe lavender does best in FULL sun. I am trying to get a lavender garden going in the rockery up front. The only lavender that we can overwinter with much success is Munstead lavender. That's amusing that your Uncle liked dandelion greens. I guess if it's good enough for the bunnies it's good enough for us right? :) I wasn't familiar with the term moss rose but I guessed correctly that I know it as portulaca. :)

Morning! Yikes on the flower/plant prices Janet, I can see why you passed it up!! You are really making me want some salmon, think I may run down to the docks next week. Your menu sounds awesome!! Ugh on the one ingredient short fairy striking again :P

Hi Linda! Yikes on the wax in your hubs eye, glad he’s okay! Yum on grilled chicken tonight. Fun on the soap making, let us know how it turned out!

Cool at maybe getting new floors Joce, like Janet asked, what are you planning on replacing the linoleum with? :)

Bri’s field day was this morning, but it got pushed back to this afternoon so the standing water has more time to dry up. They have some new events this year and one of them is Softball throw, so she is super excited to be doing that, she has a good arm on her lol. I need to do some cleaning as my MIL, FIL and SIL will be coming over tomorrow directly after Caiden’s T-ball game/party. But of course Softball has to wiggle it’s way in, and we are doing a car wash, so her and I will be leaving for a few hours to do that. Wishing everyone a great day and tomorrow as well, in case I don’t pop in :)

Portulacas are beautiful! So colorful and they do well in full sun. Was not familiar with the term moss rose either.

Well DH is on his way home. I swear for an intelligent man sometimes he has no brains. Sent him off to see the chiro himself ... he got there ... found an excuse not to be there and is on his way home. He walked out because he "didn't want to fill out another form". I now DO NOT want to hear it again that his neck is snapping and hurts or I'll Kenpo chop him and really give him something to complain about!

I had a brain cramp about the name portulacaa but after seeing it yes, they are the same. My mom always called them moss rose. Local term I guess. They are one of my favorites. Could have walked outside to see the name on the label but the recliner and Fritz on my lap negated that thought.

Linda, you actually turned him loose to go on his own? (Just kidding.) Wayne swears by our naturopathic chiropractor...he had really helped with back problems. Our GS has severe migraine-like headaches which are now being treated by chiropractic. Crossing fingers to see if it helps.

Oops...missed you Joce. We went with vinyl in the kitchen and will do the bathroom in it also...easy maintenance and it is an old farm house...cheaper also. Good luck on finding the perfect floor covering.

Hi Michelle. Have a good day, also.

I used to quite enjoy field day (or as we used to call it, "Sports Day") when I was a kid even though I have never been the most athletic person. I liked getting the occasional ribbon (Probably participant) :) and I loved getting served hot dogs at lunch time. :) Are you having your MIL, FIL and SIL for dinner tomorrow Michelle?

Oh goodness at DH not following through on his Chiro appointment Linda. The Kenpo chop might be a really good idea. Wink.

Well the lawn mower ran out of gas and I got enough done that I don't feel the need to run and buy more gas and finish completely. Even the grass that Jim mowed yesterday has a TON of dandelions on it again this morning. Besides that the Mosquitoes are VORACIOUS!!!! HOLY SMOKES!

Gonna take the extra time I'm not mowing to put the last of the screens on the windows and perhaps even wash a few of them. It is a lovely day.

It's hotter then heck here now ... 93 (f) and humid with no breeze. I feel like a wax candle when I go outside, I just about melt.

Mail man came and so did my package my friend sent. She sent me two of those plastic containers that hold salad greens filled with dried dandelions flowers and a sandwich sized ziplock bag filled with the poofy white things with seeds attached. I need to get some long rectangular planters and dirt and plant some. Can you believe I'm planting dandelions! What we don't do for love ...

I can't believe I let my "man-child" out by himself today either. What was I thinking?

It's 22C/71F here at the moment Linda. Almost my perfect temperature. Going up to 25C/77F by the end of the afternoon. That is just the funniest thing that your friend sent you dandelions and seeds and that you're going to plant them. :)

I actually managed to get the majority of windows washed and all the screens on. Can't wash our bedroom window since I'd freak out the Phoebe who is sitting on her nest. Time to clean inside now.

Mosquitos seem normal so far but the little black gnats are driving us wild. If we don't wear hats they are super bad. Found a recipe for natural mosquito repellant but have to pick up the ingredients. Really need to get the flower bed finished!

I just keep my Marigold seeds from year to year. I plant the seeds and in no time, they are in bloom. Lol they called to tell me they were just swamped in the store and we will reschedule the appointment to sometime next week when things settle down a bit. I would like to do hardwood in the kitchen, however, it would be very hard to match the hardwood throughout the house. They don't make the narrow stuff anymore. I don't want ceramic b/c it is too hard and if anythings falls on it, it is sure to break plus standing on it is a killer. These people have some new stuff that looks exactly like ceramic and it can even be grouted and it is nice thick durable stuff. I am going to go look at some at HHW this afternoon to see what they have. I also need to buy two new rubber hoses and nozzles for our new outside taps. Always something to do.

My girlfriend grows her marigolds from seeds each year as well Joce. I've never tried that. I like marigolds. I have hardwood in my kitchen and I LOVE it. It's so warm and as you say, if I drop something on it, it's usually fine. I find ceramic too cold and too hard myself. Sometimes it looks neat if you do hardwood in a different colour or pattern from the other rooms.....sets it off so to speak. :)

Floors are done, dishes done, potatoes in the oven. Need to do a quick dust and prep the salmon, asparagus and the veggie tray. I thought I had loads of time but Jim and I want to go for a hot tub at 4 so I only have an hour! Yikes!

I have WAY more asparagus than I thought I did. Won't make the veggie tray afterall. :) Less work. Yay.

We just got back from Wayne digging dirt with the tractor bucket and filling some bad rocky areas in the lane. Still need to get more dirt / Rock for the rest of the rocky areas.

We put in a fake hardwood looking floor in the redone guest room, Joce...it snapped together and is usable in kitchens. Looks nice. The vynil in the kitchen is easier to keep clean and has a tile pattern in various shades of gray, with a silver / stainless steel "grout" line. It ties in with the gray paint we used in the kitchen. Is the ceramic tile looking stuff called snap stone? We have it in the sun room and it is nice, has a special grout stuff that flexes with the tile and cost much less than ceramic tile. I am sure you will find the perfect floor which will look wonderful, regardless of which one you choose. I should save marigold seeds also since they are a favorite and we always plant some. But somehow it hasn't been done. Aargh!

If you notice two more people in your house, Janet, just ignore us and pass the asparagus. (Giggle!)

    Have a nice day!

Got in a hot tub and had enough time to make a veggie tray anyway. My Mom always used to say "Better too much than not enough". :)

I bet that snap stone stuff is a lot warmer on your feet than ceramic would be is it Karen? I've got plenty of room at the table....you and Wayne are most welcome...bring along some of that blackberry crisp though please...if there's any left. :)

We have ceramic thru the main rooms in the house (every place except the bedrooms) and it is so hard on the feet. I've learned to walk lighter but there are some days I have to put slippers on because my feet ache and it conducts the cold which probably doesn't help. Most of the time I don't mind it, we have a big area rug in the family area ... It's easy to keep clean which is the plus.

I can totally see ceramic for places where the temps are quite warm most of the time. Makes sense. Plus as you say Linda, it cleans up really well. But....when you live where I do....I just shudder to think to walk out on a cold ceramic floor first thing in the morning. Jim likes to keep the temps inside the house low at the best of times. Brrrr.
