Friday's Play

  • chuckieb 8 years ago
Good Morning Everyone! Jim is meeting up with some old cohorts for lunch down town today and I'm going to go with him and meet up with a friend. We're going to "Play" in the Byward Market. Menu:
    http://www.playfood.ca/Portals/77/custompages/play-menu.pdf
We go there a lot but we both love it and they change the menu seasonally. It's supposed to pour all day long.
NO CLUE what to make for dinner this evening. Am going to clean out the fridge this morning and drop a bunch of stuff off to a girlfriend so it won't go to waste. Need to pack when I get home this afternoon.
Didn't sleep well and got out of bed at 6:30. Could have really used some more shut eye.
Didn't realize it was your Anniversary yesterday Karen! Congratulations! How many years? LOL @ not ordering Waffles at the Waffle House. :) I'd never heard of Pecan waffles before. But Butter Pecan Ice Cream is a favourite of mine so I can imagine how good they'd be with Maple syrup over them!
Enjoyed our munchies from the Asian Market last night for dinner. Pic below is of the Kimchi (SO good!), the Soup dumplings and Jim's squid. Ugh.
Wishing everyone a great day! TGIF!

Enjoy your day, Janet. I don't envy your two day long drive to Rainy River at all though. Are you hauling a trailer to bring anything back with you as well?

    Happy belated Anniversary Karen.

Yesterday I had to go to Carleton Place which is about a half hour drive to pick up some things for Den. I became very thirsty and hungry while there and had noticed a Chip Stand (French Fry Stand) on my way there, so I decided I would stop and get something to ward off my hunger etc. It is a new stand and the menu had some very interesting things like deep fried potato skins which were then done on the grill and stuffed with cheese sour cream green onions and a bunch of other things. I just ordered a small a small fry and a coke and then decided to sit down to eat at their picnic tables which were pristine I might add. I was only sitting down for about a minute and then heard a loud crash and screeching breaks. I saw a new large white truck who was turning left at the lights and then an older large Ford Thunderbird (possibly from the late 1970's?) which spun out and it burst into flames! The young fellow who owned the Chip Stand when running with a big fire extinguisher but the fire was getting out of hand. The whole road around it was literally on fire. He and another fellow were able to get the fellow who was driving it out. A few seconds later the car totally exploded then black smoke billowed all over the place. Eventually the firefighters arrived and they blocked the highway off. I couldn't believe the stupidity of some people driving around the car on fire before it exploded! It could have gone off at anytime! Also many people stopped on the sides of the roads just to watch! They apparently had to get The Jaws of Life to get the person driving the white truck out as well. I have never witnessed anything like that before! It was like something you would see in the movies!

I will see if I can read back and try to catch up.
I'll be back:) Done in my best Arnie voice:)

THREE day drive Joce! :) First night in Sudbury, second in Batchawana Bay along Lake Superior, third night in Rossport, pulling into Rainy River around 6 p.m. next Tuesday. We have taken the back seats out of the Jetta and will try fit everything there and the trunk. Jim and I only pack two carry ons as luggage so hopefully it'll be enough room. Holy Smokes at witnessing that horrible accident. How freaky. Thank Goodness both drivers were alive and I hope they're okay. That would certainly shake a person up. We drove past the Stoney Swamp (I think) trail yesterday and there were four police cars in the parking lot. Saw them on the way into town around 11:30 a.m. and they were still there at 3:30. Have no clue what was going on but you know it wouldn't be good. Rain, rain, rain...heading in. (Good to see you back, I was missing you!)

Glad to hear you are doing it in three days, Janet. I have never been further north than North Bay. Batchawana Bay is a cool name and a place I have never heard of before. My Dad always said when driving out west that getting through Ontario was always the worst drive of all. Then getting through Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta was a breeze compared to Ontario. I know what you mean when you see four police cars near a trail. Gives me the creeps actually! LOL make sure you get the other meat grinder at your Mom's this time:) I hope it doesn't rain for her sale. Her asparagus should be ready too! YUM YUM YUM! You could make some crepes with Hollandaise sauce while you are there. I know she likes them. I haven't checked the news about the accident I saw yesterday. Den said he heard something about it driving home from work yesterday. I should check and see about it. I wish I had a camera with me and I still haven't bought a small one like yours and I should.

Oh my Gosh Joce!! WOW on that accident! I wonder how on earth the car became on fire? scary! Thankfully all of you at the chip stand were ok! That does sound like something you'd only see in a movie!
It's much cooler and raining here too, thank goodness! The town banned us from outdoor watering and my garden and pots need it! The soup dumplings look yummy! Ugh, I don't like squid either, I think I have mentioned my experience cleaning and chopping those in the restaurant before! Lol, never ate calamari again!
    Happy Anniversary Karen!
I have some sweet Italian sausages, so I'll make it with pasta or rice, not sure yet! I usually do this with different kind of sausages Italian Turkey Sausage And Rice but the kids love it when I make it with bow tie pasta.
TGIF! I can't wait to sleep in ;)
    Have a great day everyone!

Batchawana Bay and the whole Lake Superior area is very, very pretty. The hardest part and least interesting scenic wise is from Thunder Bay to Rainy River. Ontario is a large province. It is 1845 km./1146 miles from our house to Mom's. I'm bringing my recipe book along so indeed if the asparagus is still coming up I'll be ready! :) I saw this article on LakeFM's site about the accident you witnessed Joce.

A scary, close call just outside Carleton Place yesterday.
Police, fire and paramedics all responded to the scene of an accident in Black’s Corners, at Highway 15 and 10th Line in Beckwith Township yesterday after a car and truck collided.
It happened just before 4 yesterday afternoon and resulted in both vehicles catching fire – a hydro poll caught fire too.
The fires were put out quickly and the people in the vehicles all got out safely. Injuries are said to be just minor. They were treated on the scene.
The accident did cause some slowdowns. A detour was in effect until just after 5.

Do like Karen suggested to Marie Shona and use leftover dish or bath water, etc. to water your garden and pots as best you can.
Gonna make Wonton soup for dinner this evening and throw some of the leftover BBQ Pork from last night in it. Will carve up some carrots, red peppers, etc. for a veggie tray on the side.
Jim enjoyed his lunch. They went to a new place on Sparks St. called the Bier Mrkt. He had sliders. My lunch was meh. We went to the Black Tomato
    http://www.blacktomato.com/
instead of Play. I had a Smoked Salmon sandwich on a baguette and my girlfriend had a smoked burger. They were okay.
Gotta go pack. Raining out. Makes me feel sleepy.

    Good morning!
I can't imagine seeing that kind of accident Joce, it must have been horrible to watch.
Wishing you well on the trip Janet, and hopefully the weather will cooperate. That is a lot of driving!
    Happy Anniversary Karen.
I have somehow managed to catch a cold that is settling in my chest. It occurs to me that I really don't know where to go to see a doctor if it should get worse.
I started the cooking class and learned to make Bhajia Spicy Vegetable Fritters so far. I am going to post the recipe, with pictures of making it, when I am finished this post. The class is Indo-Fijian cooking which is essentially Indian cooking Fiji style using local ingredients and flavours. So far (two sessions) we have learned a lot about spices and theory and then made the one appetizer dish. Tomorrow we are doing samosas and I am not sure what Monday's class will be. There are eight of us in the class, from all over and it is a really fun couple of hours of cooking and visiting combined.
I am doing some cooking today and tomorrow for our staff meeting on Tuesday. There is a custom here called "morning tea" which looks a lot like lunch to me but it happens about 10:30 or 11 and then people go for lunch at 1:00. I am going to bring what I would consider "Canadian" foods (maybe more North American, or maybe just Saskatchewan?) for the tea on Tuesday. I am making some refrigerator pickles, a couple of cheese balls, a veggie and dip tray and then a couple of dessert items. Pumpkin Pie slice because there is lots of pumpkin here but it is never used for dessert. The peanut butter marshmallow slice that is a staple in my past for dessert trays, and some haystack cookies. If I can find the cereals I am wanting to make homemade Nuts and Bolts and puffed wheat squares but I don't know if they have the ingredients here. Anyway, I am looking forward to cooking now that I have my kitchen things here but I think I would like it better if I wasn't coughing and sniffling the whole time.
    Wishing everyone a great day,
    Michelle B.

Omg Michelle, I think I know that peanut butter marshmallow treat! Is it with butterscotch chips too? That's how I do it with butterscotch chips and fruity marshmallows. It sounds weird to people but when they try it they are hooked! lol ;) That sounds like a lot of food, it must be nice to have all your kitchen stuff now, yay! I hope you feel better soon, and that you can find a doctor. Best to look into the health care thing now before something more serious happens. Those cooking classes sound like a blast too!
Wow, luckily both drivers survived that accident! Thanks for posting about the water thing too Janet, I missed what Karen said earlier! We've been using all our old water and dog dish water in our pots. They lifted the water ban now because of the rain, I guess the rain helped fill up our reservoir's. It's rained this morning, and looks like it will again this evening. We're in rainy season now ;)
Hi Karen, hope you had a great day out!

Just now checking in! Caiden's party is tomorrow and I've been running around town all day and cleaning. His theme is Despicable Me. We rented a bouncy house with a huge water slide in it. It's supposed to rain all day tomorrow, so crossing fingers it misses us! His last birthday was ruined by the rain. My gosh we are in June, rain God's, not April! Busy day tomorrow so I probably won't be here again...hope everyone had a good day and has a great day tomorrow as well :)

I just realized that typing on my iPhone is a challenge! The last sentence was that we stopped at Mama Jeans Health Food Store and decided to get something to drink. I had a lavenberry smoothy (lavender, blueberries, banana) and Wayne got an iced latte.

Bought maple vinegar (on impulse), tea tree oil, small red tea for me, a bottle of French wine (la veiled ferme, whatever that means, it is red anyhow so we shall see when we shall see), basil and oatmeal soaps, "natural, non burning" mosquito repellent stakes, and perused their organic meats aisle. Temp was 91 and we did not bring a cooler so we will have to make a return trip. They had elk for $10.95 per pound, ground bison burgers, certified organic grass fed beef, a place after my own heart.

Wayne exchanged his iPhone for one with more memory. The cool survivalist store was closed or we would have seen whether he had the batteries one of our flashlights requires and are next to impossible to find.

Wow on the accident, Joce! It must have been super scarey!

Three day trips are no fun, Janet! This summer we will travel for two days, It has been a long time since we drove more than that. I had suggested to Marie on an earlier post that she use gray water from baths, dishwashing, etc. to water plants. Understand the need for rationing water completely, but my plants have a right to survive. SO if need be, I would collect gray water, etc, and use it to water plants. Guess it is good we live in a rural area, no one rations anything - YET! But, esp. during dry seasons, we do monitor well usage carefully.....when the well goes we are in deep kimchi! I guess you could use the gray water sparingly so they don't appear too lush, maybe leave some dried leaves etc., so they don't attract unwanted attention!

Looking forward to your Fiji cooking lesson recipes, Michelle B.

Michelle, hope the rain holds off for Caiden's party. I imagine he is super excited!

Shona, using old dog dishes etc. is a good idea.....anything that will hold gray water or rain water and set it aside for dry spells!

Thanks for the anniversary wishes. Wayne baled hay on the day, so we went to Springfield today instead.

Kitties are wild and wooly tonight after being cooped up all day. The monsters ran everywhere and sneaked into the forbidden computer room! (In name only, it is a temporary storage area soon to be repurposed! They are slowing down, jumping on my lap and purring. Trouble is not ready to give up, Mauser is laying on my legs and debating sleep or rampage!

Have a nice evening, see you tomorrow!
