Market Saturday!

Good Morning Everyone! It's going to be a gorgeous day here in the Ottawa Valley. Jim and I are just about to head over to the Farmer's Market.....our first trip this season! Very excited! :) We just ate a bagel for breakfast as we want to pick something up there for lunch. I tried maple butter on my bagel this morning. I'd picked it up a couple of months ago on the recommendation of my cousin. Bleck. I like maple syrup on my pancakes but the maple butter tastes just like maple syrup and I don't like it on my bagel. Lucky I only bought a bitty jar. :)

Dinner last night turned out great. I'm glad I made the veggie tray. :) Keni's asparagus was very yummy. I just marinate the asparagus in a big frying pan and then quickly cook it up in the marinade as opposed to marinating in a bag, draining it and grilling it. The salmon was great. Could have been cooked a teeny bit less, but whatever. There wasn't anything left on their plates so it must have tasted fine.

Haven't figured out what to make for dinner this evening but I should grill something as it's going to go up to 25C/77F this afternoon.

For those of you not on Facebook, Laurie fell off her outside steps yesterday and badly sprained her ankle. She's on crutches. :( Sounds like she's feeling a fair amount better today though thank goodness. GET BETTER SOON LAURIE!!!

Have fun at the FM today, Janet. I am glad dinner turned out well for you last night. I am not a big fan of Maple Butter either. Maybe I just haven't tried it on the right thing?
I saw Laurie's FB post. Poor thing she was sitting by the pool in the morning wishing she could stay there all day instead of going to work. As she said, be careful what you wish for!
We are staying put until at least noon today as it is our neighbourhood's yearly yard sale and there are so many cars/vans/ trucks and people out there it is ridiculous! We lose our quiet little town from now until after Labour Day especially this year b/c we are also celebrating our town's 200th Birthday. Events, tourist and things will be going on each day. One good thing about it is that it is good for business. The downtown core will be jam packed! Den will have his regular cheeseburgers and fries for dinner and I may have some grilled baby lamb chops with steamed asparagus and a baked potato.
    Wishing everyone a great day!

Hi Janet. Agree Maple butter would probably be better on pancakes, sounds a bit too sweet for bagels. Enjoy your trip to the market. Couldn't get Wayne interested in the Rolla one if I tried....he has his mind set on painting.

I read about her fall. No fun. Glad she is off Percocet and on Motrin.

I have no idea what to fix tonight but am leaning toward either a trip to Edgar Springs new restaurant for fish or ?????? from the freezer. It is supposed to be in the seventies and sunny today. Wayne plans on cleaning out the storage shed and painting the cabinets. So far he is dozing in his recliner. Heh heh heh! I planted the rest of the flowers in the flower bed and potted a mother-in-laws-tongue plant. My older one surprised me with a couple of new shoots so I put the new one in another pot. Now have another one to pot then a big mess to clean up. Should have taken it outside in the first place.

A.C. Is outdoors enjoying his limited dose of freedom. He has to come inside around three because Geezer shows up shortly afterward and they hate each other. Sounds like two toms going at it. The other day Wayne's buddy had to Break them apart just before the confrontation was to begin, and sent A.C. running to the house. Silly beasts! There is plenty of room for them to coexist.

I have to go plant another house plant and maybe plant seeds in some jiffy cups to get ready for putting in the garden IF it gets finished. Hmmm, maybe better to wait and buy some veggies when it looks more promising. Ha!

    Have a good day!

SP Joce. Ugh on yard sale traffic.

Thought about going to a church auction (they are merging with another one and selling bunches of stuff) but it is 90 miles away!

    Have a nice day.

    Good Afternoon Everyone!

Getting a very late start to my day for no good reason other than wanting to be lazy and take a little time for me.
I cut my soap and it came out really nice! I would have liked more balance between the yellow and natural color but I'm still pleased with it. Now I need to wait about 4-6 weeks for it to "cure" and then I'll try the small "leftover" bar and see how well it lathers and moisturizes. I'm confident it'll be fine. Instead of using all water I used half milk, half water for a more luxurious bar. I plan on gifting this batch to my Kenpo teacher when it's ready to use. When I gift soap I like to make labels for them and finally finalized a template I'm using from Avery that I'm happy with. Now that I have the dimensions of my bar (I am now cutting them 1.25" thick) I was able to line up everything for the label. TA-DA!! My avatar picture shows what I've done.

So happy to hear dinner was awesome Janet ... I never had any doubts it wouldn't be. Farmers Market sounds fun. Your maple butter would probably go well with sweet potatoes and as Karen noted pancakes or waffles.

So sorry to hear about Laurie's ankle. Ouch!! Hope your feeling better soon Laurie.

I hear you about "laying low" Joce. Neighborhood anythings are always a challenge when they bring tons more traffic thru.

Going out has my vote Karen. It's the clean up you can't beat and it's nice to just get up and walk away.

We are going to take a ride down to Naples (about 1/2 hour south) later for dinner and then to pick up some specialty items at Whole Foods.
It poured rain here all last night but a thunderstorm did NOT accompany the rain. I grilled chicken rubbed with a rotiserrie rub and made foil dice potatoes that were a little over done and also had edamame and corn.
I'm sore from my upper-body work out yesterday and need to stretch everything out.

    That's it for now. Enjoy!

Your soap sounds wonderful, Linda. What other scents do you make? I bought a bar of homemade cinnamon scented soap from the Mennonite store and rediscovered it where I had set it when we came home. Senior moment! It is so nice. And smells great.

The Dollar Tree carries oddball, not homemade, soaps. I bought some lavender soap, black soap, pine soap, and it is fun trying them. Even their French milled soap seemed nice. But the homemade ones are so much better!

I had not thought about maple butter on sweet potatoes but that really is tempting! Yum! Janet is the hostess with the mostest and I always like hearing about her menus.

Fritz is stretched out on my lap, he would rather be with Wayne but little puppies do not mix well when one is spray painting an old metal cabinet for the tool shed.

    Have a great day!

Ooooo I'd like your dinner tonight please Joce! Nice on Perth's 200th Anniversary. It's a lovely spot.

I vote the Edward Springs restaurant Karen. Goodness on A.C. and Geezer having words. :)

Me time should take priority more often than not Linda. :) Glad to hear you were pleased with your soap. Your labels and your soap are beautiful. I love stuff like that. What a great project. Have a fun jaunt to Naples and a fun shop at Whole Foods. I've only been to Whole foods a couple of times and I LOVE it. We have just one that opened a couple of years ago? but it's way downtown and I don't get there often. Your dinner last night sounded delicious.

We didn't buy a single thing at the Market. Their veggies aren't ready yet of course although they did have asparagus and jerusalem artichokes. Jim had a hankering for "Bacon on a Bun" for lunch so we got that, but discovered that the smell of it was better than the taste. Oh well.

Stopped at another garden centre on the way home. Got an heirloom tomato plant, a deep purple double petunia, a variegated petunia, purple and cream. and a tray of edible nasturtiums. I'm not sure if I have any room left in my planters. If I don't I may have to go dig out another pot from the shelf. :)

Just going to lay low this afternoon. Both Jim and I are a bit pooped from yesterday and Jim didn't sleep well. Going to grill burgers for dinner and still have leftover veggies from last night for a side.

I vary the fragrance Karen. One of my favorites have been chocolate. Now when I buy fragrance or essential oils I buy them in either 2 oz. bottles (one and done) or if I really like something I'll go bigger. A lot of fragrance oils turn the soap darker to a tan and sometimes brown because of a vanilla undertone and I get tired of it. I just order 6 (2 oz.) fragrances that don't discolor the soap ... black raspberry vanilla, blueberry jam, Anjou pear, gingerale, mint choc chip, and melon ... can't wait to get and use them!

I'm glad Fritz is inside with you. I'd be afraid if he was out what color he might come back in (LOL)!!

Pop a bowl of popcorn and find a good movie and kick back this afternoon Janet. Bummer on the farmers market venture but "yea" on your garden center finds.

SP Karen. I'd like cinnamon scented soap.

Black raspberry vanilla is a neat one Linda. I've recently had a pear soap. It was lovely. I don't think I'd want to buy a mint chocolate chip one. I'd be craving cookies first thing in the morning. :) I'd LOVE some popcorn now you mention it but don't have any. :( I did make some parmesan garlic stuffed mushroom caps as an appy but popcorn would have hit the spot better. :)

    Hi again.

Chocolate mint is to die for. I don't think you will get any calories, Janet. LOL!

Yes, Linda, Fritz is better off inside. Wayne will take him outside as soon as he finishes his shower, then back in the crate until we return. He is a sweet little dog and very affectionate, but somewhat high maintenance compared to our Aussie.

We mowed yard and barnyard and lane. I used the older standard riding mower and Wayne used the new zero turn one. I did play with it and feel like next time around I will try a little mowing. It is aJohn Deere 930Z and does take getting used to. I will undoubtedly mow much slower than he did.

Wayne was given the O.D.D. Vote and said he concurred with the vote to go to Edgar Springs. You win. LOL!

Mauser popped outside and immediately panicked. Wayne just got her but it was not easy. I guess we will have to start easing the little ones into the great out of doors so they can finally be indoor outdoor kitties.

A.C. thinks he needs out again. No way, too near Geezer time. He had a fun time wandering in and out of the garage, tool shed, barn, and carriage house. His range is expanding, he even went beyond the barn to the fork in the lane before returning. But when we are outside he hangs around pretty close and wants lots of attention.

Just had a nice long shower...well, as long as I ever take, which isn't all that long. Hot water costs! Ha ha! Feels so good after getting covered in grass and bugs!

    Have a good day.

Enjoy your dinner out karen! The kitties will enjoy their summer immensely getting to be let outside some. :) How are the chickens doing these days? Laying lots? When we were in the Niagara last week my SIL cooked us up Guinea hen eggs. They're about half the size as chicken eggs but tasted the very same. They have 4 Guinea hens that they purchased to control the bugs in their garden. don't know how that is going, but the eggs were good. :) A good hot shower does feel wonderful after mowing, getting that gasoline smell off too is nice. :)

OH! Anyone have any easy ideas for Gluten free cookies or bars or whatever? Jim and I want to invite our neighbours over for coffee but the wife is allergic to gluten. I was thinking meringues?

  • MissouriFarmWife 7 years ago said:
No idea about gluten free stuff. Wayne's buddy said his girl friend can't eat gluten but they have just started that way of eating so have not figured out the best way of fixing same. AllRecipes has a gluten free brownie recipe (by Jewels). I have not tried it and my iPad is not cooperative about copying URLs. Meringues would work just fine, however.

Chickens are laying well. Guinea hens are quite the characters -- noisy, always running away from home but then returning again, great for eating ticks! They would not work too well for us because of the tendency to roam around, probably becoming coyote dinner.

I know Bisquick makes a gluten free mix ... Perhaps one of pie recipes or a coffee cake. I've made this pie with their original mix and it's fantastic. http://www.bettycrocker.com/recipes/impossibly-easy-french-apple-pie/7f79f7f1-cbf7-4866-86e2-0054e53d7f2f
