good morning everyone! first thing i think of when i hear the word mellow is donovan's mellow yellow song. :)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bs7xZKXwyR0
what's on everyone's agenda today? i didn't get a chance to get back yesterday as we were busy in the afternoon with our company. we had a lovely visit. they loved the lunch and both had second helpings. :)
vegetarians do eat eggs shona, they just don't eat meat, poultry or fish. it's vegans who don't eat any animal products including eggs or milk. most vegetarians would not eat chicken broth based soups, etc. but to each their own! :) your ham and cheese omelette sounded good yesterday. maybe we'll make that for our breakfast today! thanks for the idea. keni's recipe for chicken and dumplings looked yummy although i must admit to not being a big fan of dumplings. hope the new ENT helps sophia out with everything. that sex in the pan dessert looks very decadent!
we ended up eating leftovers for dinner last night so will do the korean pancakes this evening. bean sprouts seem to deteriorate so quickly!
goodness on michael's sandwich creation michelle! did you see my suggestion yesterday for caiden's 100 shirt?
your red lentil and spinach curry sounded deelish michelle b.!
nice on your church's chicken karen.
lol at rick's goulash creations marie. he sounds like a good cook so i'm not surprised to hear they turn out yummy.
not a whole lot going on here today. it's quite mild. 3C/37F. i have a book chat at the library tomorrow so have to do up my book report today. i didn't like the book so that makes it trickier! :)
    have a mellow monday everybody!

oh! i heard from tina! she says she is having internet issues and that only her phone is working and she also said that skippy was failing and had lost control of her bladder. she's taking her to the vet today. hard on her as skippy was fred's favourite. :(

So sad about Skippy. Tina really cares about her doggies. It is so hard to watch them deteriorate. Your dinner sounded wonderful and yes, it is unusual for vegetarians to use a chicken broth basis for soup. However, it does make it easier for us omnivores to entertain. Our niece used to be vegetarian and I just made sure there were items she could / would eat. Fortunately she ate eggs and drank milk so she could have egg salad, cake, etc. - or anything made with them.

One of the little deer did not show up this morning for their morning corn. Nature is cruel, and I did hear shots yesterday evening (which means more poaching) but am trying to remain optimistic and assume that they merely parted ways for a bit. The smaller of the two was in the yard, very skittish, and watched me through the sun room window as she ate.

Fed horses and let the hens out into their chicky yard - they were milling all around, very annoyed - probably reacting to the crows that were cawing and caterwauling close by. We had a rooster who hated crows and since he was HUGE, they didn't hang around the chicken yard.

Wayne is staying overnight. He did text me yesterday, which is not really like him. He kind of assumes all is well if I don't call / text. Ha ha.

    See your all later.

i'll keep my fingers crossed that the little deer comes back karen. how much property do you have again? i have to say i wouldn't like to hear gunshots. that being said, we do hear them from a distance in the fall when hunting season starts. duck hunters mainly. jim is outside shovelling the back deck as we had 2 avalanches off the metal roof since it's so mild. bright blue sky and sunshine so it's really lovely out. i want to try a new lentil soup recipe that was in our local paper last week. i have all the ingredients out but need to wait for jim as i can't slice the lemon, chop the onions or coriander nor can i open the bottle of minced ginger. harumph! :)

There are different types of vegetarianism. I use to be vegetarian, and later vegan. (Vegetarianism was all the rage in Vancouver in the 90's! lol) I still ate eggs and milk, and a co-worker of mine told me you're not vegetarian, your're a lacto-ovo vegetarian. And another friend of mine was vegetarian but she'd eat fish! There's a word for that too....lol...all different levels. Some eat dairy but not eggs etc...I wasn't vegan very long because I was consuming too much soy products and became very ill and suffered horrible migraines. I later discovered I was allergic to soy! Pete and I didn't eat red meat for over ten years. Once in a while we'd have a good steak in the summer because my brother would bring it over to BBQ. But since moving to Alberta, beef is cheap! But we were just talking about cutting our red meat consumption down quite a bit and eating more vegetarian meals through the week to save money :)

Oh, poor Tina and Skippy. :( If Skippy does go to rainbow bridge, I'm sure Fred will be there to join him. Sending prayers your way....

Wow, that's quite the sandwich Michael made yesterday, if that was you making it I'd think there was a bun in the oven! Lol! I totally get what you mean about the 100 days! We do that here too, except this year they did wall art. We did 100 macaroni's and glued them in the shape of 100. Some days I'm glad we only had two children, because of the amount of homework I do with my son! And in a few years that will be Sophia with all the homework :S

The Classic Chicken And Dumplings were good. I think I under cooked the dumplings a little bit. Pete loved it though, the kids weren't big fans of the dumplings...probably a texture thing. I might make dumplings again someday, it's probably something you'd have to grow up eating to really love them? But we still liked it!! And we'll have it for lunch today. Pete has another day off. I ended up making a vegan lemon cake for dessert. I didn't have the puddings for the sex-in-a-pan and told Pete I'd have to leave out the cream cheese for Sophia so he said he didn't want it then, lol. I had a big bag of lemons though, but no eggs. The cake turned out very well, no one could guess there were no eggs in it! I'll have to post a recipe for it, I made an eggless lemon curd and vegan frosting to go with. Yum!

    Have a great day everyone!

Sp Karen! Awwe, I hope it wasn't poachers that got the deer :( My SIL told me to not worry if I used chicken stock in a meal, I'm sure she doesn't use it at home though! My other SIL is gluten intolerant, lol, so it makes interesting family get-together's! ;)

Oh Janet, that must be so frustrating not being able to use the other arm! I feel for you!

We're off to do a big shopping trip, I didn't go the other day and now we're virtually out of everything. It just started to snow, thankfully Pete is driving the truck :)

    HI Shona.

I never could be a vegetarian, much less vegan. Like my beef too much. We eat beef, venison, sometimes buffalo if it is on sale, pork, chicken, whatever. But there are some really good non-meat dishes out there and I'm open to trying them! Beef is sky high here so I watch the sales. Decided we could have a steak when eating out almost as cheap as fixing it myself (not really but it sounds like a good excuse, right?).

I really have to try the chicken and dumplings one of these days. Will have to read the recipe to see if they are flat or round ones. Love the round ones but mine are generally dry inside.

The lemon cake sounds wonderful. Eggless or flourless or sugarless or ???less recipes intrigue me for some reason. Especially if they have four ingredients or less.

Soy can be a problem - 85% of it is GMO, or so they say, and I try to avoid GMO food. Since the government now refuses to allow labels to inform us whether processed foods contains any GMO items, that is sometimes difficult to manage. Grrr! End of mini-rant. I will cease and desist.

Rainbow Bridge must be huge - I have a Morgan gelding there waiting for me to arrive so we can gallop all over God's heaven. He was the perfect horse and we were good buddies. He died over twenty years ago and I still miss him. Skippy will be in good company.

    Have a good day.

Janet, we have 80 acres, three sides are Mark Twain Forest, one is absentee owned. We hope it stays that way. He lets us hay his fields (they get fertilized and not so overgrown that way) so we both benefit. I don't know if the deer is still alive, but they do get hit on the road, and there are predators, and illegal hunting off season, any number of things that could be operating here. I didn't know they got parasites, but have since found out if they are around goats they can acquire the worms and die from it.

you're right shona, there are different forms of vegetarianism. :) there's no way i could be any of them. lucky you on low beef prices but i agree, jim and i are trying to limit our beef intake to once a week for health reasons, and eat predominantly chicken, fish and lean cuts of pork, but i will admit it's tricky. that means since we had steak sat. night...i really shouldn't have had the leftovers for dinner sun. and then it certainly means that i shouldn't make meatball soup this week even though i've been craving it big time! :) i guess as long as we do it in moderation and keep a handle on it we're going in the right direction. nice that pete has the day off! your lemon cake sounded yummy! have fun shopping!
nice on 80 acres karen. that's awesome! love the sound of 'mark twain forest'. :)

I agree on the beef. Grew up in Ohio and my relatives had cattle so we loved beef everything. We eat a variety. I did some research and found that only plain old air is good for us, depending on what part of the country you live. LOL. (Joking).

Fish is good when I can get Wayne to try it....but we try to avoid farm raised and prefer wild caught. Antibiotics and, in the case of tilapia, anyhow, methods of feeding, are not always healthy. One could become totally paranoid with today's food problems, at least stateside. Enjoy your leftovers and like the man said, "Don't sweat the small stuff." I would rather eat leftovers than toss perfectly good food.

We hope the other deer is okay and just on a different route or something. If it was a poacher I would be ticked.

    See you later.

Having the chick n' dumplings for lunch, mmm tastes so much better than last night. I think the few dumplings that were leftover cooked through and the soup is nice and thick, like a gumbo. :) Thankfully Pete drove, the roads were icy and there was more snow in the city than out here.
Once we started on the red meat, we couldn't stop. It was like we deprived ourselves for so long that we got addicted, lol. I say once a week too, but it usually ends up being twice. Especially if you have leftovers! And what did I come home with? a beef roast! Haha, it was on sale ;) Yep, all things in moderation!
I couldn't believe the price of pork today, I wanted chops but they were over $15 a kilo, we got chicken breast that were $9 a kilo! Usually it's the other way around for pork and chicken.
I have a special dog, a standard poodle that I grew up with--I'm sure we'll see our pets up there- when it's our time :):)

we too try to buy wild as opposed to farmed fish karen and sometimes it's very tricky as it doesn't say! we don't eat a lot of fish but we're trying to incorporate more in our menus.
meat prices and groceries in general have seemed exorbitant lately shona. it's nasty. jim and i just did up our forecast budget for the coming year and we set aside $800/month for that. 2 people! and it's not like i'm buying prime rib and lobster every week!

Yes, Janet, for sure food prices are high. We plan on growing some next year. We probably spend about that, only in American dollars. Whatever the conversion rate is these days.

ugh. our canadian dollar is WAY down these days. $800 canadian is equivalent to $573.07 american.
the korean pancake recipe pretty much sucked. the bean sprouts were no way near spicy. throw a ton of thai sweet chili sauce on anything and it'll taste okay. :) won't make that recipe again. made up some frozen dumplings as well which were pretty good so we didn't go hungry. :)

    Hey all!
Day of from work. Had to take Frank into Boston to get his colonoscopy. They removed four polyps this time.
All the beef talk lol we had steak tips for dinner. They were pricey but I was craving them. So that rice pilaf (boxed)and brocolli and it was $22 at grocery store so not too bad for the four of us but not a spec left over. I find that produce prices are crazy right now. You would think that with fuel being so low that some of the savings would be passed to the consumer.

Hi all. Last night I started feeling funny, and achy and I knew I was coming down with something. Michael said I talked in my sleep all night long. Woke up feeling like death and didn't really know what to take, but I felt like my face was full of sinuses, had horrible drainage, sore throat and had a headache all over my head and including my neck. Make sense? Lol. Took and Zyrtec when Michael came home from work he said I felt hot, so took my temp. and it was a little over a hundred. Took some Advil and I think it's helped some, I actually for the first time today felt like opening up my computer!! Hope everyone had a great Monday, will go back and catch up on the day :)

    Hi all.

Michelle, hope you feel better. Colds and sinus crud (official medical term - ha ha) are running rampant in MO. Our daughter and one GS were sick, and now Wayne is coming down with the version that I had. (Cold, we think.) I didn't have a fever but he looks like he might. Raw honey, grated ginger, fresh lemon juice or (better) diced lemon pieces, put in a jar in the refrig and take a tblsp per day. There are several versions on FB - some include termuric or cinnamon.

I gave a bottle of whiskey to our daughter so she could make a hot toddy, also good for respiratory stuff - guess she will either get better or have a good stiff drink and not care. Ha ha. I would be careful, though, if you are taking Zyrtec it might not be such a good idea. LOL.

Janet, it has been so long since we were in Canada (Ontario, about 100 miles north-ish from Toronto - don't recall the name of the little town). All I know was whenever I exchange dollars for ANY other currency there is a psychological feeling that I can spend, spend, spend because it didn't seem like I was using "real money." When we lived in Germany the Deutsch Mark rate was good for us at first - I got a lot of crystal etc. etc. -- when the rate flipped, not so much. Don't even have a passport now so would have to get one before going anywhere not stateside.

Laurie, we had beef tips the other day and had a beef roast today. Love beef. Regardless of the naysayers and "food police" pronouncements. The cost here has skyrocketed so badly that I really watch for sales. We have considered buying a steer from a neighbor, but that would require getting another freezer.

    Have a good day.
