Mighty Fine Monday

  • MissouriFarmWife 8 years ago
It is a beautiful sunny day in MO. We are curled up in the sun room just finishing a cup of coffee and I may just have a second one. I can hear the chickens puck-puck-pa-ducking so one has probably laid an egg. They will be happy to get outside since for their own safety we do not generally let them out on Sunday if it might be late when return.

A doe (just a little one) is strolling about outside about 20 yards from the house. So cute. It is just a baby, so Wayne is not about to add it the venison in the freezer. The deer he bagged on Friday is ready to package, our first task for the day. He will go out this afternoon and look for the elusive "30 point buck."

We will be going to the "viewing" this afternoon for the little girl who passed away last week. Not a pleasant thing, but the family is coping well and appreciates the support from the community. So sad.

    Have a good day, everyone.

    Good Morning Everyone!
Jim and I have a ton of errands to run today. We have an appointment to donate blood around noon, then I want to stop into Ikea and pick up a couple of frames for two small prints I bought this fall. Jim wants to go to Costco and see if he can buy a new battery for the car and I need to buy a birthday card for his Aunt. I know there's more on the list but of course I can't remember at this point. :)
It's -4C/24F at the moment. I washed my winter coat over the weekend so hope it's dry by now. :)
Going to panfry some haddock for dinner, with spinach and smashed potatoes on the side. Might try Bren's recipe.
    Smashed Potatoes
I am going to an "Epicure" party this evening. I think it's foodie stuff, gadgets and seasonings? Never been to one before.
Marie, how's that turkey doing? Good luck at the church today! :) Let us know if Rick 'slips up'. :)
Did you get your laundry all done yesterday Joce? What's on the agenda for today? When do you put your Christmas tree up?
How'd your stir fry turn out last night Bren?
Did you get any decorating done yesterday Wendy? Is the snow still on the ground or did it melt?
A big wave out to Tina and anyone else MIA.
Michelle B! Would love to hear how you're making out in Fiji! Will you put up a tree this year?
Nice to see you pop in last night Laurie. Roast and a loaded baked potato sounded yummy. What do you load your potato with pray tell?
Sounds like you had a really nice time at Caiden's end of year baseball party and at your Mom's Thanksgiving celebration Michelle. I'd never heard of Mexican train before. Haven't played dominoes in a million years. Maybe a trillion. Are the kids off all week long from school? Enjoy your time with Michael just the two of you.
Good luck with more deer processing today Karen. LOL @ the chickens puck-puck-pa-ducking. That's funny! :) How many eggs are you up to per day now?
    Have a great one everybody!

Hi Janet. We get about 2 or 3 per day, more or less. They are small, pullet size, so I will buy some for baking and we have been enjoying farm fresh eggs. Decided to get more next spring but will have to raise them apart from the others until big enough to escape harm from the chicken heirarchy - maybe get a rooster also, maybe not.

Wish we had an IKEA nearby. It sounds really interesting. Sounds like you have a busy day.

The only thing I won't be able to do this week is take Mary (cat) to the vet. She may have to be put down, so I'm dreading the trip. We think it is pancreatitis?????

See you later. Wayne is back and it is time to get to work.

    Good morning ladies:)

Karen, I am so glad that the couple have such great support from everyone...I'm sure it means the world to them..
Awww on the baby doe..they are so precious:) Good job getting the venison all ready for packaging..what a job!

Janet, yes, I'm getting ready for my work day...sigh...I didn't sign up fro this and he knows it:) LOL These days I'm just not into manual labor..I'd rather sit and work:-D
I have a ton of stuff to do after that..I need to start cleaning the house..then tomorrow I'll make the stuffing (Karen, I have always stuffed the turkey as well!) make deviled eggs, cranberry relish, Rick will make his pumpkin pies..I thought I'd also make mashed potatoes early TG morning and keep them in the crock pot on warm? I believe I've done that before with great success...craft..haha I just want to get as much done as I can the day before! The turkey seems to be thawing..slowly but surely!

Not a clue what to have for dinner:)

    Have a lovely day everyone:)

The eggs we'd buy in Taipei were fresh and it was really nice. The yolks were quite orangey which is so different from the pale yellow I buy at the grocery store here. Ikea's a blast. And how many chickens do you have again Karen? Sorry to hear about Mary. :( It's heart breaking when it's that time.
Morning Marie. You're making me very hungry with your Thanksgiving talk. :) I have frozen turkey leftover from our Thanksgiving so I'm going to do Hot Turkey on Thursday so I don't feel too left out. :) I'm sure the potatoes would do fine in the crock pot on low to keep warm. Some crockpots (not mine) even have a warming function.
Had a nice chat with Benjamin online. About to head off. I can't donate blood today. Read the requirements and you can't have a cold and I am still trying to shake mine. Boo. Jim will go and I'll bring a book.

I can almost picture the doe, Karen. Lovely.
No, I'm sure that it won't be easy but bless you for supporting the family. I can't even imagine what they are going through, so very sad.
It's never easy to loose a fur baby Karen, they're family too.

Wow, Janet. You are going to be busy. I hope that you enjoy the potatoes, if you make them.

I've never been to one of their parties either but I do use some of their seasonings. Their chicken wing coating, my son uses it, is very good. I use their beef and chicken base because it has very little salt. Their stuff is very pricey.
The str fry was really good, thanks. Daughter didn't like the oyster sauce that I put in it though.

Your day sounds really busy, Marie. Maybe something easy for dinner!!

Janet, those eggs sound just like the ones that I get from a farmer. The yolks are almost orange.

Enjoy the rest of your day everyone.

We have 7 hens, Janet. Should have bought more chicks and next year we will increase the number. 10 good layers will keep us and our daughter supplied. 15 will do the neighbors.

We got 16 lbs of meat - small deer. Lost quite a bit due to where it was shot - both shoulders were smashed. Evidently it died instantly - shot went thru the heart and at least one lung. I won't keep meat that was hit by a bullet and/or has hair or blood clots in it....not really safe. I labeled it with a different color marker, to differentiate which deer it came from.

Marie, I agree on the manual labor. I have to finish the kitchen - AARGH! The sun room floor took the chops from deer processing. So it needs a lot scrubbing. Wayne is putting away the grinder that I cleaned before lunch. Then we are going to take a quick nap before he goes out hunting. Our daughter should be here about 10 Wednesday so it has to be done by then, and Tuesday is impossible - he has an early Dr. appt. and Rotary and we both have chiropractor appts. so I am going in with him. He wants to come back ASAP after the chiro. appt. for one last try at locating the hidden buck. Of course, there is black powder season next month so I will probably go out with him at least once so I can say yes, I did shoot my black powder rifle. Sigh. I prefer a regular firearm season.

Trouble has decided to be bad. She keeps running into the bathroom and taking off with a roll of toilet paper in her MOUTH. Wayne swept up the remains of a partial roll while I was cleaning up the grinder, all from one rotten little kitten. They don't like us away from them in the sun room and carry on until we return to the LR. Little brats!

A couple of stray kitties are hanging around our daughter's. One MAY belong to the neighbor next door but they are certainly not feeding it at all decently. I would like her to politely ask if it is their's under the pretense that a friend would like to adopt it if it isn't owned but doesn't want to run off with an owned cat. If it isn't or they say the friend can keep it, I may take it and the hopefully-not-pregnant-again female and try locate them in our barn. Crossing fingers and toes that they do stay in the barn....and spaying is next. I detest people who dump or abandon animals.

O.K. must get moving. Lots to do before we leave this evening. Have a nice day.

    SP Bren!

Yes the orange yolks and farm fresh eggs are superior to the factory farmed ones in the supermarket. Our daughter is allergic to something used in the wash process they use, and can not eat them. I have less digestive issues with farm eggs, also, really have to be carefull when we are traveling and eat out.

Hi all! Glad your about done processing your deer Karen, what work! Awww sorry to hear about Mary :(

Sounds like you have a busy day of running around Janet! I have made potatoes like Smashed Potatoes...the Pionner Woman has a similar recipe called crash hot potatoes, they are SO GOOD!! Yup the kids are off all week! There are so many requirements to giving blood, I think I read you can't have tattoos, or maybe it was can't have just gotten a tattoo, anyway, I have 3 lol! I'm guessing and Epicure party is kind of like a Pampered Chef party?

Marie, good luck with work today...sorry :( I think keeping the mashed potatoes in the slow cooker is a fantastic idea, don't see why it wouldn't work!

    Hi Bren :)

Doing some around the house..slept a little late this morning lol. So I skipped breakfast and went straight to lunch. Made this salad Cranberry Kale Salad it was really good! Watched a movie while I folded some clothes and I need to get out in the garden here in a minute and weed it and make sure everything is still alive lol. Dinner will be leftover hamburgers. I still need to review them in the IMI, almost forgot! Wishing everyone a great rest of the day :)

Hi Michelle. I cant give blood either - in Germany 1983 so that lets us both out.

Two little does are strolling just inside and outside the fence again, in our "orchard." One is little, the other is just itty bitty baby. Wayne is in the Gazebo and I am sure he sees them, but has no desire to take out one of the babies. He thinks they need a chance to grow into adults. They took off when he closed up the Gazebo, but returned after about an hour and are chowing down on the grass and ??? in the orchard. So cute. No camera on hand - drat! We plan on tearing out the dead, damaged trees and replanting apples and maybe pears. ??? if we would do peaches.

Thanks for the info on the epicure products Bren.
So once your chickens get laying on a regular basis you'll get 7 eggs a day right? so that's 49 a week? 16 lbs. of meat from the deer doesn't sound like very much alright. Sad about the stray cats by your daughters. That'd be nice if you were able to give them a home.
Hi Michelle! Yes, there are a lot of requirements before you're allowed to give blood. And you have to answer this list of questions which include all sorts of embarrassing stuff, mostly to do with who you have had sex with and drugs. It's hard to get through it without a little giggle. You can't give blood if you have had a tattoo within the past year. Yes, I think Epicure is sort of like Pampered Chef. I'll tell you more tomorrow. :) Yum on your dinner. Love hamburgers!
Didn't make it to Costco but we had fun at Ikea although I didn't end up buying my picture frames. I had to come home again and measure and take a better look at them. :) I did however find some cute gift wrap, gift tags and napkins. Found a few things including some stocking stuffers at the Dollar store while Jim got his hair cut and also grabbed a few groceries.
Decided to just eat leftovers for dinner tonight since I have to head back into town in not too long. I'll keep the fish for tomorrow.

Hi Marie. Deli chicken is a good choice for dinner.

Janet, they lay an egg every 2 or 3 days. We get about 2 or 3 a day. I have about 20 little green eggs in the refrig. They are too small to use in baking, yet. But Wayne likes eggs and bacon for breakfast, so he is happy. As chickens age, they lay fewer eggs...I would have to have someone else dispatch them for use in chicken and dumplings, or I'd have a zillion non-egg-laying hens. I am not good at eliminating old hens. They tend to stay around forever.

The visitation went well. Our GS went earlier and the line was out into the parking lot. When we went, it had settled down a bit. They had to move the funeral tomorrow to the H.S. gym, there were no churches large enough to hold it. The 5th and 6th grade classes were going to sing a song at the beginning of the service -- not sure our GS can manage that, but we shall see.

It is a quiet night. We just got back and are sitting in the LR watching TV. Tomorrow is going to be busy. Dr. and chiropractor appts. Have a good evening. See you all tomorrow.
