Spanner Crab Saturday

  • notyourmomma 8 years ago
I was looking through the seafood ads and ran across a crab species that was new to me. Spanner crabs have flat "spanner"-shaped claws. They have bright orange to brick-red shells and a spiky, elongated back shell. The darker red crabs are considered the best. Spanner crab meat is coarser in texture than other species and known for its sweet flavour.
Also known as frog crab or red frog crab.

Now, I'm in a crabby state of mind.
Pictures are Spanner to the left, Snow Crab center and Stone Crab Claws to the right.
Stone Crab season opens in October!!!

The dogs and I will be playing chase the dust bunnies today.
I'm treating myself to steak and eggs for breakfast with sweet potato hash.

Have a great day my friends.

I join you in crabby day. Have been fighting Amazon.com trying to find competition swim goggles for my GS using the info my daughter supplied (and obviously found them) and finally gave up. Will contact her - we will collaborate or else order from a different site. He needed jammers for both competition and practice, goggles, and a tai kwan do helmet for sparring. Combination birthday present (helmet) and Grandma-supplied swim gear. I wanted to check the credit union but their horrible website pretends it doesn't recognize my password AGAIN even tho I copied-and-pasted it AGAIN to avoid typos. Today I hate computers and web sites -- they are in collaboration to annoy my easily irritated psyche - Aargh!

We had some rain last night so it is greening up. Nice, cool morning. I fed the outdoor cat, picked him up and petted him for a while. He purred and kneaded the air in appreciation. Poor baby is starved for affection. Plan on easing the kittens outside for a while but must go easy introducing them to Geezer....he is NOT a docile dude. Maybe follow the tried and true method of using a large metal crate (sounds nicer than cage) in the grass with the two safely inside so they are protected but he can sniff around and acclimate to their presence without any altercations. Once they are on speaking terms and no hostilities are evident, kitties can roam about on their own for a while.

It is finally Saturday. I have to check the bank balance again - much more accurate to go online - and maybe type up the fire dept. minutes and church council minutes. AFTER cleaning the LR - my dust bunnies are reproducing at a remarkable rate.

Have a nice morning and enjoy your steak and eggs for breakfast. I am not in a breakfast frame of mind, but best get into a finish-the-laundry frame of mind and make a dent in the ever-growing pile.

You're killing me with Crab talk and I haven't even had breakfast yet Tina! Very awesome! The Spanner Crab is a different looking one for sure! LOVE THE JOKE! :) Good luck with the Dust Bunny chase! Nice on Steak and eggs! I NEVER heard of the Cheeseburger in Paradise song before
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBsPZV14I-k
That's hilarious! Sounds like you got a very nice delivery from Schwann's!
I have a friend that gave me a ton of Iris bulbs just recently Marie, so I hope they come up nicely in the spring like yours do for you! That's so nice they were your Grandma's! :) That was funny that someone posted the Andersen's Pea soup while you were telling me about it. I'll stick with the link you sent me. :)
You sure had a busy day yesterday Michelle! Hope you get some downtime today!
Ugh on the computer troubles Karen. Sometimes certain websites don't allow you to copy and paste a password you have to actually type it in letter for letter/number for number. How are your chickens doing these days? Getting a lot bigger I'd expect? Good luck with the laundry!
The lamb steaks were SO tender last night! I served them with Edamame on the side and Luisa's
Heirloom Tomatoes With Panko Crusted Goat Cheese
    It was a great meal.
Gonna make Hot Chicken sandwiches for dinner this evening. It's supposed to rain this afternoon so I thought it'd make a good rainy day meal. Made up the gravy yesterday with some of the broth I'd made this past week and I'll use up some leftover cooked frozen chicken I had in the freezer.
Going to go to the Farmer's Market after breakfast and see what we can see.
    Have a great day everyone!

I had never heard about that crab species either, Tina. Your breakfast sounds awesome to me.
Good luck with tracking down your GS's birthday present, Karen. Some computer sites can indeed be frustrating!

I love Hot Chicken sandwiches, Janet. Have fun at the FM.

I ordered two live lobsters from our Butcher and they just called to tell me they were in.
They are almost two pounds each! Lol so guess what I am having for dinner! I am also going to go to a younger friend of mine's farm (either today or tomorrow) and bring her my GD's Doll House for her five year daughter. She will get quite a few years of play out of it. Lol her Mom has told her about it and she is very excited! I can hardly wait to see the look on her face when it is all set up. I must remember to bring my camera.

Awwww Joce......I WANT YOUR LOBSTERS!!!! :) Enjoy! How sweet of you to bring your Grandaughter's Doll House to your friend's daughter. Do show us a picture when you get it set up. How fun! I had a small doll house when I was young that my parent's got for me from the Sears Catalogue. Fond memories.
Fried eggs, ham and toast for brekkie. Just fed my creatures. A baby cardinal was bullying a bluejay out of the feeder. Too funny! :)

Hi all! Another busy day, have to take Briauna to Softball practice, coach said it should be a 3 hour one! :| Then going to my Mom and Dad's for my Dad's birthday! They are having a small get together. I was told to make a 7 layer dip, so I guess that's what I'll do lol! I'll have to put it together at my Mom's house so the gaucamole doesn't start doing weird stuff. Wish I could catch up but I gotta run, have a great day everyone :) :) :)

Hi Michelle! Oh goodness on another busy day but it does sound fun! :) Happy Birthday to your Dad. Have fun at the get together. A 7 layer dip eh? I'll guess....guac, salsa, sour cream, cheese, tomatoes, onions, cream cheese? :)
Off to the Market. It's about to rain.

Good shop at the Market and the rain hasn't started yet. Got some nice red peppers and jalopenos for one last batch of Gazpacho this next week. Also picked up a nice, big cabbage in anticipation of a batch of Cabbage rolls next week as well. Saw some beautiful muted orange pumpkins. Didn't notice the variety name but the woman said their flesh was velvety and they were great for cooking with. I made a Pumpkin soup once upon a time that I quite enjoyed but haven't done much else with them cooking wise.
Gonna make some home made pizzas for lunch.

Lobster, 2 lbs. WOW! Gazpacho YUM! 7 layer dip perfect for a party!!

Oh, Janet, I remember how much Fred loved your cabbage rolls. So good.
I thought everyone had heard of "Cheeseburger in Paradise" but then I am in Beach and Burger Heaven. It is a common song here.

Michelle, you exhaust me. Happy Bday to your Dad.

Joce, I have a doll house that Fred's father made......It has electric lights, too. I freshened it up in 1990 with wallpaper and new carpeting. Not one girl in the family expressed interest in playing with it. I'm sure your friend's daughter will be thrilled.

I have the LR and DR swiffered. I'm sweating. I don't know why I didn't think of buying baby gates before, but I have now blocked access to the half of the house and it should cut down on a whole house of dog hair. Dogs stand at the gate and stare at the new couch. Haha! So my room will get the brunt of the shedding. I set up the comfy microfiber bed in the closet so Charlie doesn't have to jump up to the bed. Better for his hips.

I'm going to watch some football and chill.

So cool on the doll house that Fred's father made Tina! Great on the dog gates doing the trick! :)
PIZZA GONE WRONG! First time I used store bought pizza dough and I should have known to add a lot more flour. It wouldn't shake off the pizza paddle into the pizza oven. One pizza is a big yucky mess and the other I'm trying to rescue somewhat in the oven on a metal pizza pan. Sigh. Live and learn.

I didn't go to my friend Sarah's house today. I thought I would miss the rain but I got caught in it at the Kids Farm Stand, before going to the Butcher's Edge, to pick the lobsters up! I would love to see the doll house that Fred's father made. I have seen some wonderful ones and they are very expensive to buy now a days! I see a fellow with a nice big truck around town and he builds doll houses according the the signs on the sides of the truck. Janet if you want to see a pic of the doll house check my time line on FB. I put a pic of it when the girls were younger so the little girl who is getting it could see a pic of it. I remember when I bought the doll house. It was on Boxing Day and things were on for ridiculously low prices. It is a Fisher Price Doll house and I got it for $25.00! I covered it up with a blanket for about a year or so until the girls were of the age they weren't putting things in there mouths. Lol it even has a pet pig! i will also put more pics of it up when we get it set up at Sarah's house.

I'm still not hungry after that breakfast. Protein sticks with you.

Janet, sorry the pizza failed. I wonder why? I was taught to put corn meal on the peel to make the crust slide as if it were on ball bearings?

The doll house is on its side in the garage. It is quite big. I loved it. I used velvet dress material to make the plush carpet. Liv was never a doll girl.

If I do get hungry, I'll have a salmon burger with aioli, capers and garlic.

Karen, I hope you get the crabs out of your computer. Talk about frustrating. How are the chickens doing?

Hi Marie, glad you got a break from routine and had a good time.
Lola is really crabby today. Her TV dislikes are growing. When she starts to growl, I have to change the channel and take what offends her off the screen.
