Sunday Silence

  • MissouriFarmWife 9 years ago
It is a quiet Sunday morning. An occasional acorn drops on the roof and rattles down. Homer is snacking. A.C. is plotting further mischief. Mel is roaming the house. No one is making any sounds. So quiet and peaceful.

In about an hour we will be on our way to pick up either 2 GSs and daughter, or maybe the GSs only, or maybe only 1 GS, for church. Her co-worker brought lunch at work, and I think she reacted to something in it. This is not unusual. She said it tasted great and there were - “green things” - in it. Aargh! Translation: probably cabbage or greens of some kind, some of which she can’t have. Our youngest GS went to bed at 8 P.M., very unusual for the little night owl, she thinks he may be coming down with something. I don’t know who is going, will find out later I guess.

It is so nice and quiet this morning. A few insects are chatting away outside but the rest of the world is still. No predator howling or bobcat wailing, not even a coyote. They have been silent for some time - maybe they have moved on or the season for raising the young is past or ??? Ozark wildlife fascinates me. I really need to learn more about the critters in the woods. When looking thru some game pictures we noticed an unusual critter, at night so the photo was not clear and probably would not show up if I tried to download it here. Muskrat? Ground hog? Personally, I prefer the deer and the turkeys.

If it were a weekday, it would be nice have a cup of coffee in the sun room and relax before beginning the day. Sunday mornings leave no time for leisurely coffee and relaxing breakfasts.

It is 6:20 and I am going to have to get moving. Today is Reformation Sunday so I need to find something red to wear. (I can hear Tevia in “Fiddler on the Roof” singing “Tradition” as I type. LOL. Loved that play! )

    Have a blessed Sunday.

Hope your family feels all better soon Karen. Enjoy the solitude while it lasts. I haven't had any encounters with Muskrats but Groundhogs are very friendly. "Fiddler on the Roof" was a good production! Love the pictures! You still have a lot of leaves left on the trees. Ours are pretty much down now. Is that black thing in the first picture the camera? And I guess it's motion activated? Very cool.
Sounds like you got very fun goodies for your nieces for Halloween Laurie! Very cute! I adore Scooby-Doo. Hope your stomach is feeling all better this morning after your burger not agreeing with you last night. Have a great visit with your sister today.
So sorry to hear Liv has a bad employer Tina. I hope she had fun carving pumpkins with her friend and I hope she manages to resolve the problem at work.
Haven't thought yet what to make for dinner.
Wishing everyone a lovely peaceful Sunday.

    Good morning ladies:)

Well, dinner was not as good as we had hoped...the waitress was not great and that doesn't help! Very slow service..it was wonderful the last time we were there..At least we got to watch our nephew's college football team play..he's at Kansas State..freshman, hasn't played in an actual game yet but we're still following the team:)

We're going to check a job here in a few minutes so I need to get going! I'll check back in!

Dinner will be Janet's Meatball Soup

I adore Fiddler on the Roof!

Good Morning!! Wow I would love to have even a drop of the peace filled morning you are having :) Actually the kids are playing pretty well today. So it's your daughter that ate green things and had a reaction? That's too bad :( Hope your GS isn't coming down with anything. Good luck with getting all the work done today!

Hi Janet!! How did Sweet And Sour Spare Ribs turn out for you last night? :)

Gotta go get Bri some Winter boots. Not necessarily for snow or anything lol, just for style. Here is where we will be shopping and the selection we will have
    http://www.shopjustice.com/search/?q=boots&originPageName=shoes%3A+boots
Then my dad is going to come over for lunch and to watch the Texans game. We have lost the last 4 games (or maybe 3 can't remember) so we need a WIN!!! Cross fingers for us, we are all sporting our shirrs today for luck! For dinner I pulled out a whole chicken to make a spatchcock chicken of some sort...I have a bunch pinned so I am going to go through them in a bit. Hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday!!

Hi Marie! Sorry your dinner last night wasn't up to snuff but fun that you got to watch your nephew's team play football! :) Good luck with today's job. Yum on Meatball soup. I'd eat that for dinner tonight myself. Wonder if Jim is up for that? He bought a lovely loaf of Sourdough bread at the Market yesterday that would go very nicely with it.
The Spare-ribs were wonderful thanks Michelle. I have a photo of my Grandma enlarged and mounted on a hard board? and it's currently sitting on my kitchen counter. The rib recipe is hers so I couldn't help but grin and talk to her last night while I was making it. She was a very superstitious lady who believed in all sorts of mystical things so I'm most certain she heard me. :) We had baked potatoes with them and a yummy veggie tray with Heinz '57 dip. Have fun boot shopping. Good luck to your Texans. And have fun with your Dad as well. Love that you're all wearing your shirts. Yum on Spatchcock chicken.

Good Afternoon friends. I can't believe I'm running so late today. It was the dusting, I tell you. Too many bookshelves and world globes. I can't stop sneezing. Of course, I did it backwards, you should dust first and swiffer the floors after. And I have a cake to bake.

Karen, love the photos. It does sound very peaceful at your early rising. Fiddler on the Roof was a great production. I'll be humming the sound track all day, I'm afraid. I'm sorry your daughter and GS are feeling poorly. I hope all will recover quickly. Enjoy your service today. Thanks for stopping by G-ma Roberts recipe.

Janet, I love your story of talking to Grandma while making the Spare-ribs. Very fun.
Okay, is the Heinz'57 dip on GR? Sourdough bread with meatball soup would be a great dinner. Thanks for the kind words re: Liv and her work. She did have fun carving her pumpkin. It is resting on the bottom shelf of my frig. Jess (her friend) took a bunch of pictures and she was smiling while carving. She has to go to work at 4 and is grumbling mightily.

Marie, Aw, sorry to hear the waitress was slow and your dinner was not up to par. How sweet to be following your nephew's team. That always adds interest to a game when you know a player. I stayed up much too late watching the World Series. I'm happy to see Janet's recipe is circulating around GR. It is always fun when the recipes are tried by other members. I hope your work day is short.

    Joce???

Michelle, I feel your pain with the Texans. Our Buccaneers are in bad shape as well.
And my favorite baseball manager, Joe Madden, is not going to be with the Rays anymore. Booo hoooo. Gnashing of teeth. I do hope you have a great visit with your Dad and that the game is satisfactory! I have to laugh the idea of winter boots are so foreign to me. I might wear a closed toe shoe during the winter, but most of the time, I'm in flat open toe shoes.
Spatchcock chicken is always good. They cook so much faster.

So, after cake baking, we will have the pork tenderloin, mashed and red cabbage tonight.
The cabbage won't wait another day.

Hi Tina! No...the Heinz '57 dip isn't on GR but I'll put it up soon. When Jim and I were first married we used to do Fondues allllll the time with a gang we hung out with and the Heinz '57 Dip was one of the Fondue dips that one of the other girls brought over. I've been making it forever and it's excellent as a veggie dip. Super easy too. A cake sounds yummy. Would love to have that smell permeating my house and your dinner sounds excellent as well.We are going ahead with Meatball soup and sourdough for dinner. Another Sens Game tonight so soup in front of the fire sounds perfect to me!

I just knew I'd be giving you some dinner inspiration when I mentioned we'd be having your Meatball Soup Janet! Yummy stuff:) We did get the job, so I'll be adding another door to the order:)

Hi Michelle:) SP:) Hope your team wins today!

Tina, What kind of cake are you making? I haven't made a cake in forever! Yes, it seems like Janet's recipes do make the rounds! She does have some wonderful recipes..there are more I want to try, but I seem to gravitate back to the ones I have already made:)

    Joce:) Hi!

Karen, I'm still waiting for my sunroom:(

Ooops, SP from earlier Marie! Sorry your dinner was not so good. I think sometimes restaurants have their bad days. At the Egg and I which we have been going to for years with success, Michael got his first hard poached egg a couple weeks ago. Have a good day and enjoy that delicious Meatball Soup!

Your Grandmother sounds like such and interesting and fun lady Janet! To make her spare-ribs I'd only have to replace the brown sugar with coconut sugar. I have some Paleo ketchup :)

Hi Tina! Lol I have cleaned the floors and then dusted as well before, then wondered why the heck I did it in that order! Haha, the only reason they wear those boots is just because that's what they put in all the stores and plus they are cute :) AND they keep the schools at like 60 degrees. She takes a jacket to school even when it's a hundred degrees outside. Your entire meal sounds delicious. I want some cake!

Had a good lunch with my Dad. He just left because it was half time. Texans winning 20-3! Got Bri the most adorable little grayish silver boots. Also got her a long sleeve T shirt with a B on it and a couple pairs of earrings. I settled on this chicken for tonight..

Congrats on yet another job Marie! Thanks for the compliments. I'm really honoured that a few of my recipes have made the rounds lately. And even more tickled when they're enjoyed!
Oh my goodness on a Chocolate Truffle cake Tina. Keep us tuned. I'm drooling already. (Your Halloween shrimp brain has me thinking of all sorts of ghoulish meals....I was prepping the hamburg for the soup and thought how awesome it would be to make a Steak Tartare brain. Must go google!) :)
You don't happen to have any palm sugar by any chance Michelle? Although as soon as I say that then I wonder if palm sugar is Paleo friendly? I've never tried coconut sugar but I know Palm sugar is quite close to brown sugar. My Grandma was a Hoot with a capital H. Loved her to bits but she passed away when I was 13. Hurray for your Texans! Bri's new boots and T-shirt sound adorable. Yum on the Spatchcock chicken recipe. It looks delicious. Let us know after you try it! I'm so excited (although a little nervous) as I did find a nice pkg. of parmesan rinds a couple of weeks ago in the grocery store. I've been watching for them ever since you told me you'd put one into the Meatball soup you made. My smallest pc. was about 1" tall by 3" long. My only concern is that it is going to impart TOO MUCH flavour into the soup? Should I be worried and pull it out? Did you leave it in cooking with the soup the entire time?

What I have is called Coconut Palm Sugar. Wonder if it's the same? It's brown just like brown sugar. I promise that the rind will not give too much flavor. I leave it in the entire time and the 2 times I have cooked with rind, there is usually the very thin edge oft the rind left over and I just pull that out and throw it away :)

I would have presumed that coconut sugar came from coconuts and palm sugar came from palms. LOLOLOL. Googled it extremely quickly and Wikipedia says "The differences are semantic, as all the sugars under their various names are still produced from the sucrose rich sap of a palm species." Thanks Michelle. I kept the parm rind in for half the cooking time as I wasn't sure and I hadn't read your post at that point. Was your rind about the same size as mine?
Just came in from a Hot Tub. There's a cold North wind blowing. Jim's lighting us a fire.

    Hi all.

We ended up with two GSs - daughter had a reaction to shrimp and feels el-yucko.

Janet : The first picture is of wild turkeys in the field, next to an automatic feeder that scatters corn every 10 or 12 hours. It will be illegal as of 10 days before deer season - they call it baiting deer then. The camera is on a nearby post or tree.

The second is an eight point buck photographed in our lower field. He is the normal size around these parts, but considered small in Norther Missouri. ( A spike buck (illegal this year) and a six pointer (also illegal unless it has a minimum of 4 spikes on one antler) were in a lot of photos. Several does showed up all over the place.

The last is how our house in fall colors.

We still have trees that are green - later this year. The weather is in the 80s today and then Saturday drops to 35 F at night. The general consensus is that weather like this precedes a super cold winter so watch out.

The baseball fans around here are following the Royals during the World Series. I stopped watching a zillion years ago when it was always the Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers (am I dating myself - Mickey Mantle days - LOL).

Michelle, my daughter wore jeans and t-shirts forever and was not at all interested in “girlie” clothes for years. The silver gray boots and matching t-shirt sound adorable.

Patience, Marie. Sun rooms come to she who waits. LOL. I love ours!

Spatchcock chicken is new to me. I will have to try it.

Enjoy your fire, Janet. It is nice and warm here and not fireplace weather yet. Ha ha. Wayne tied back the “gauze” curtains on the gazebo because they were getting whipped about in the wind. It is quite breezy this afternoon.

Tina, your cake sounds great. Your dinner sounds wonderful. We are having leftover bulgogi from Bulgogi House. LOL.

I started walking again - not far because of the arthritis hurting, but every little bit helps. Have a good day.

I just carved a lb. of button mushrooms into skulls. They are going onto a low oven to shrivel. Why? 'cuz I'm nuts.

Good for you on walking Karen.
Enjoy the fire and hot tub, Janet.
My chocolate seized. I'm thinking I accidentally scorched it. I'd hate to melt another stick of butter and cream to try and salvage it. So we have cooled chocolate cake, I can whip cream in the morning and call it sacher torte. Liv said she would bring home strawberries, failing that, I can use pomegranate. Strawberry cream filling, Whipped cream frosting and dusted with cocoa powder? Dumb mushrooms distracted me.

The faux sacher torte sounds fantastic! Bring it on. Actually, most chocolate sounds good to me. LUV dark chocolate on anything.

I hope you post a photo of the "skulls."

Yep, I'll post a picture of the dumb mushrooms. Just because they made me ruin the chocolate. It is granulated sludge. We will announce this cake as sacher torte with strawberries. When you fail, just re-invent. All is good.
