Sunday's Saran wrap.....

  • chuckieb 6 years ago
Good Morning Everyone! It's quite a lovely morning out despite the fact that thunderstorms are forecast for this afternoon. We got a hard, steady rain last night and everything is green, green, green. Am totally getting the humidity today Bren and Joce! :) May end up turning on the air conditioner soon.

Jim called this morning. He and his brothers, nephews and Dad had a really nice day yesterday on the Boat Cruise and Beer tasting and they went out for dinner last night as well. Jim had Fajitas.

I was planning on doing a batch of chicken broth today but with temps forecast of 28C/82F I think I'll put that off to a bit cooler day. I will however make a batch of soup this morning as I thawed two quarts of chicken broth the other day and need to use it. I was going to make Dill Pickle soup and I still may but I'm on the fence at the moment.

My girlfriend is coming for lunch and a hot tub this afternoon. I had some Roast Beef dip down in the freezer that I thawed so will serve that up with sauteed asparagus on the side. Not sure about dinner plans yet. May just scavenge and clean up some leftovers.

So ants actually did major damage to your neighbour's cottage Bren? Wow. I really didn't think we had big wood eating ant problems here in Canada. Poor Annie and indeed the cost of the surgery is insane. Letting her recoup at the cottage is a great idea. Thanks for the link to the reusable K-cup. We just bought them for Jim's Dad as a present. He LOVES k-cups and the ease of them. He wouldn't be interested in fiddling around filling his own.

Jim cooked for me on Wednesday, lunch and dinner and the food was great and all went well. On Thursday I went back to kitchen duties and when I pulled out my saran wrap I saw this. LOLOLOL. I suspect he had an altercation. LOLOLOLOLOL.

Wishing everyone a most lovely Sunday.

They are also cautioning about tornados in this area, Janet. I guess we are in perfect condition for them today. I hope it doesn't happen though as I have been through one before:( Glad Jim is having a good time at the cottage with his relatives. The wood eating ants we get here like wood that is starting to rot. We don't get termites here but they are in Southern, Ontario. Enjoy your visit with your GF. Lol I was wondering about the Saran Sunday:) TOO FUNNY!
The cost of surgery for Annie's hip is quite a bit Bren but once she recovers I am sure she will be just fine. Amazing what they can do today.
I am pleased to hear you and DH had such a good day yesterday, Linda.
We are doing laundry and are having Prime Rib Roast for dinner with Yorkshire Pudding of course.
Wishing all the fathers A Happy Father's Day!
Wishing everyone else a pleasant day!

Hi Janet, LOL at the saran wrap!! That's too funny!! LOL! :D Enjoy your lunch visit today! :)
We have the wood eating ants here too, they've been eating away at our deck because the support posts get damp and are rotting. We sprayed for them when we first moved in, I find the occasional one with wings now and again so I know they are still here. We had them very badly on Van.Island. With all our old growth forests and rain they live on the rotting stumps and roots of fir and cedar trees. Two of our homes had termites as well, they love to come in and follow the hollow trails of the carpenter ants. I hoped it would be too cold for those ants here in Alberta, but apparently not :S We have to remove our deck next year and hopefully those ants will move on too!

Aw, that's so great you will do the surgery for her Bren. Better to do it now before she gets too old and is in pain. Glad you tackled the ants and cleaned the cottage. I guess there is always something to do and fix with a cottage! A really good deterrent for any ant is Boric acid. I buy Borax from the laundry aisle at the store and sprinkle that all around the outside of the house, if you know the point of entry than put it all around there. Diatomaceous Earth works too but is a little more pricey than Borax.

Linda, Sophia loved the sloppy Joes! She's like her Father and loves anything with meat, lol ;) It's the first time I made the Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes I'll have to leave a review shortly. It was good, but it needed a little water as it used all tomato paste and no sauce. And I bumped up all the spices. I didn't cook it for that long either, maybe two hours on low then I turned it to 'keep warm' as the beef was already cooked thru. How nice to give your Realtor a gift certificate to the steak house! Maybe one day you'll move up there and use her again??!?

I never made it to the store yesterday to pick up steaks, so I have to do that this afternoon. We have leftover Sloppy Joes for lunch. I'm going to check on my rhubarb and see if there's any I can harvest for a Fathers Day dessert. I didn't buy Pete anything for Fathers day, so I need to spoil him with his favorite food instead! ;)
Hopefully the store didn't run out of good steaks! If so I'll finally make some ribs. It's been years and years since I made ribs! If we go out to eat somewhere Pete always orders them. I heard that a half rack of ribs has more fat and calories than a Super-sized BigMac meal! So I've haven't made them since, lol....

Have a great day everyone! :)

Morning Shpna. Well....I'm obviously way off on my belief about the wood eating ants. LOLOLOL. That's very fun that Sophia enjoyed the Sloppy Joes! I would LOVE a rhubarb dessert! I saw some rhubarb in the grocery store yesterday and was so close to buying it, but whatever I make with it I'd have to eat the entire thing myself and although I could certainly handle that, my body thanks me that I passed. :( I'm going to grill some Beef Ribs as part of a Father's Day dinner for Jim on Tuesday. Indeed they are not at all heart healthy. We try limit our intake to one or two meals of them per year. Guilty pleasures. :)

Good that Sophia enjoyed the Sloppy Joes, Shona. Actually pork fat is much better for you than beef fat. Especially for your heart. Which is why they call it the other white meat.

I do love Pork ribs! Yum Yum! It was one of those things that got in my head and I just couldn't bring myself to buy them, lol. Good to know about the heart Joce, after doing our family research and learning about all the heart disease in both our families it's something that worries me now!
So you're going to try the beef ribs Janet! Michelle's recipe? I hope you like them. I don't remember the last time I had them? I love rhubarb! You could make individual gallette's and put leftover's in the freezer. Just put apples or berries in the Rhubarb "disliker's" galette, ;) My dad would pull a stalk from the ground and sprinkle sugar on it and eat it, I don't love it "that" much though! ;)

Good morning everyone. We had the air on last night because the back bedrooms get the afternoon sun and are hot!! Yes, the ants got into the neighbours roof and they had a lot of damage that had to be replaced. Luckily their son is a carpenter and did the repairs for them. I've never seen anything like that before, just masses of flying ants swarming the windows and screen door. I was a mad woman running from window to window spraying them. Beer tasting on a cruise sounds like great fun. I hope that your girlfriend makes it, I would love some of your beef dip. Lol @ the saran wrap.

Oh Joce, your dinner sounds wonderful!! Yes, it is amazing what they can do and dogs bounce back so much faster than we do.

Thanks Shona. I have Borax but I worry about Annie getting into it, she's a real scrounger. Replacing a deck is a big job!! Sloppy Joes are an easy meal, especially in the slow cooker, I'll have to put that on the menu soon. Nice that Sophia liked it. Ribs do have a lot of fat...I wonder if cooking them in the pressure cooker would render out most of the fat?

The sky is not looking good!!! I really wanted prime rib for dinner but was out voted in favour of Asian take out. I have laundry to catch up on and the house needs a good dusting. Best get going.

I don't do a recipe for the beef ribs Shona. I just chuck them on the BBQ and then slather them down in BBQ sauce. LOLOL. I could totally do individual portions and put them in the freezer but again, I'd be eating all of them. Just at a slower pace. It's not rhubarb Jim dislikes, it's pretty much most desserts. As kids we used to do the rhubarb and sugar thing out in the garden too. LOVED it!

I would have voted for Prime Rib Bren but I wouldn't say no to Asian take out either. :) Good luck with the laundry and dusting.

Hi Bren, ahh yes if you have a scrounger than Diatomaceous Earth is the best bet as it's safe. You can buy it by the plastic bottle at walmart or hardware stores. But if you have a place that sells chicken feed they usually have it by the bag.( If you sprinkle the dirt where chickens dust bathe, then it helps eliminate ticks, fleas, mites etc...)

I could see how a pressure would render the fat out. My Parents would boil the ribs then coat them in sauce and grill. I'm not even sure how I would do it if I bought them. I guess I'd better look at recipes! Asian take out sounds great!!

Ahhh yes, it was Michelle who didn't like the beef ribs, Janet! oops!
Pete's not into desserts either, he'd rather have two portions of a good meal over a desert any day! He got use to me making them though and had to become my taste tester when I took pastry courses! I remember trying out the choux pastry and making 100's of éclairs and cream puffs.....he begged me to stop so I used my neighbours as guinea pigs for awhile, lol ;) He likes tart desserts on occasion, and that "sex in a pan" dessert is nostalgia as his mom made that for his birthday (she calls it 'passion in a pan' of course!) I think he eats them just to please me, that and he doesn't like to waste food! My human garbage disposal I call him, lol ;)
I love to bake but since my friends and family live so far away I don't have many people to share it with :( If I make too much of something than Pete brings it to work for the guys, it gets devoured every time so that makes me feel good! :)
I'll share a virtual piece of rhubarb pie with you every time I make one Janet!! :D

That's hilarious Pete being your taste tester and begging you to stop making him eat eclairs and cream puffs. LOLOL. Love it. Oh yes please on the virtual piece of rhubarb pie....Yummmm....and some rhubarb crisp if you make that as well....:) Thx.

Had a lovely visit with my girlfriend and as always she brought me a beautiful bouquet of flowers too. :) I'm so spoiled. :)

The afternoon has turned gorgeous and the wind is strong enough that it is keeping the mosquitoes at bay.

    Have decided to make
    Chicken And Coconut Soup
with the broth I have thawed. Between that and the OH SO MANY leftovers I have in the fridge, I'm totally set for dinner.

    Hi everyone.
We had a graduation party yesterday for my niece. She graduated college but my sister lives in a condo and I have a large yard with a pool so it was here. I didn't have to do much. She had it catered way too much food. I made BBQ honey chicken wings which were a hit. It was a late night we had a fire in the fire pit and marshmallows toasted at the end.
Frank is contatantly spraying for ants and such. We are having a problem with our deck! Ugh it's sinking. Last week. Walked under it and my foot sunk into the ground about a foot. The dirt is so soft. I didn't know who to call so I called our septic guy (real nice guy that's local) the good news is my septic is ok the bad news is that water draining from the gutters has been draining under the deck! And they have been since before we bought the house gen years ago! The footings and joists need to be braced and then we have to dig out all the dirt and put in crushed stones and dirt. We don't even know who to call for that, so it's gonna take some research.
We went out for lunch for Father's Day I got lobster and shrimp scampi, Rachel got ribeye and shrimp scampi, frank got chicken and eggplant parm over homemade pasta and Becca got haddock ficase over angel hair. THEN we went out for ice cream for dessert! I was stuffed.
Rachel feels a little better she slept pretty much all day yesterday
My inlaws are coming from Florida on Tuesday. Frank and his sister are at odds because she is so selfish! Planning a 50th wedding anniversary party together has taken its toll. I'm usually the mediator but he is right his time and I told her so and she is probably pissed at me. He said I always take her side and don't see her for how she is lol I do trust me but you can't choose your family so it's easier to see the good in her than the bad which my girls and he usually do.

The party sounds wonderful Laurie! Oh goodness at the water/deck problems. I'm sure with your being in the real estate business if you ask around you'll get some good names for a contractor who could fix it up for you. What a great Father's Day Lunch you all had! I'm gonna go with Rachel's rib-eye and shrimp scampi although I have to admit that Becca's haddock fricasse sounds very interesting! Glad Rachel is feeling a little better. Fun fun that your inlaws are coming for a visit. Wow on a 50th Wedding anniversary. That's awesome, despite the hassles. :) Are your inlaws staying at your place?

The chicken coconut soup is awesome. Can't wait to have a bowl. Made extra broth for sipping. :)

    Good Evening Everyone!

The picture of the Saran Wrap is hilarious Janet!! Has me wondering who won ... the Saran Wrap or Jim. (lol!)
The boat cruise and beer tasting sounds fun. Beef dip sounds great too and glad you enjoyed your visit with your friend and that is so nice she always brings you flowers.

Hope all it is is a "caution" Joce regarding the tornados and you see no parts of one. Prime Rib sounds awesome! Enjoy.

That's great Sophia enjoyed the sloppy joes you made Shona. I guess now you can add it to your rotation. It too is always moist here and we are so close to the woods that we contracted a termite company for prevention and a pest company too. Last thing we need is some infestation of something and because we really don't have a winter nothing dies off. I too love to bake but don't anymore because I'm the only one eating what I bake and really don't need to. I will on occasion but that's it.

I have no problem with Asian take out Bren ... especially the easy clean up.

Oh no on your deck problem Laurie. At least you know what the problem is. Hoping you find the right people to get the job done. Perhaps Frank and his sister can call a truce in time for the party. Family can be tough.

Picked DH up early and came back to the house and spent the day here. I made sandwiches for lunch and he grilled hotdogs for dinner and I made a chopped salad using the recipe from Morton's steakhouse. Watched tv and when it was time to go we no sooner pulled out of the garage and the rain came and boy did it come down. Thankfully I drove out of the storm about half way into our ride and then just caught some sprinkles on the way home. I am so sick of rain already and it's just the start of season.
This mornings smoothie was kale, spinach, apple, blueberries, strawberries, chia seeds, and a good sized scoop of vanilla yogurt.
