Tantalizing Tuesday

    Good Morning Everyone! I'm making....
    Crockpot Chicken And Kraut
for dinner this evening. Can't resist. The ingredients sound like a strange combination but it got a good review and it might just turn out to be scrumptious!
Dt, re: last night and the Thai Basil. You know how there are different types of Thyme...lemon thyme, chocolate thyme, etc., it's the same with basils. The Thai Basil in our food last night had a bit of a licorice flavour to it, which I adore! (By the way Pat, do I get my tiger-tail ice-cream cone today?).
I am posting a couple of pictures today that I took while we were downtown on Saturday. The first I took especially for the majority of you....it's the U.S. Embassy here in Ottawa. Thought you might like to see that...and the second is the entrance way to the National Art Gallery. It's a stunning building.
    Have a good one everyone!

Anxious to hear about crockpot chicken and kraut.

Love the pix, Janet! Can't wait to hear about the kraut n chicken dish. I love kraut, and I love chicken, so why not? lol I think I would do the caraway seeds, instead of Lillian's suggestion of garlic...I cannot imagine kraut and garlic, but then, kraut n wienees is the full extent of my kraut cooking experience! : )
One of the girls that works at one of the title companies we use alot brought us breakfast today! Yippee! We had spinach souffles, ham souffles, cheese danish, and some type of muffin I haven't tried yet, all from Panera Bread! One of the perks of the job!
Chicken on the grill for us tonite. Bryan bought 4 boxes of different meats from a guy in a truck who stopped by the other day when he was off. I think it's Capital Meats (?). He bought burger patties, filet, sirloins, and chicken breasts. The chicken is marinated in something, it says "Italian" on the box...maybe Italian Dressing? Anyway...that should be easy peasy for a work day. Some dressed up green beans, and Lipton Creamy Chicken rice with cheese melted in it. (My kids and I LOVE that stuff!).
    Happy Tuesday!!

Burgers here too. I did just have something strange for lunch. I apparently had a bunch of my Big Fat Greek Lamb Casserole filling left over. I tucked it into empanada discos and froze them. Pulled a couple out this morning to thaw then fried it up. Mix is too wet for Empanadas but eh... I'll eat them all eventually. What else are freezers for.

    Good afternoon all!

Janet, thanks for the info on the basil. Come to think of it, I have had an experience with lemon basil so it makes sense now. Those are some great photos!

Pat, I have to ask.. what is tiger tail ice cream?

I had a mean burger craving yesterday so we just picked some up from a place down the street, but I dressed it myself with arugula, tomato slices, and pickle slices. I'd rather not use the stuff they have sitting out (especially iceberg) if I can help it. How do you do your burgers Wynne & Laura? I saw a recipe for spinach feta burgers that caught my eye a couple weeks ago. Not sure if the beau would go for that...

And Laura, I was wondering if you could bake those frozen empanadas? would that cut down some of the moisture? I know they're meant to be fried..just a thought.

For dinner tonight he's making rib-eyes, probably using the sear and blast method. On the side I'm going to try my hand at stuffing some tomatoes, along with corn on the cob and some hash-brown potato patties.

Actually DT this is the first time I ever fried an empanada. Just decided to give it a whirl as that is the traditional method. Baking really does work okay but it seems to take a bit longer and the pastry can get tough if you go from freezer to baking. Baking when they are fresh is better. But really this was just me being cheap and not wanting to waste food. Too wet is too wet but it went down all the same.

    Good thought though thank you.

Yummm on the ice cream & YUMMMMM!!!! on the waffle... I should probably eat some lunch :-)

Gotcha, Laura. Was brought up w/the no wasting mentality (too). I've had to let it go a bit b/c if I really don't like something & my beau doesn't either I know it won't get eaten..

The Chipotle Aioli from the Chipotle Burgers is to die for. I keep a container in the fridge now since making the burgers the first time. Try spreading some on a strong piece of fish like Halibut and broiling. Yum.

    Hello everyone!
Janet your pictures are terrific. You may have mssed your calling! Your dinner sounds really interesting. I agree with Lori - caraway not garlic though!
Pat - too bad your tour was cancelled again. Oh well, I'll bet you and Phil have fun finding the bridges on your own and can stop where ever you want for dinner.
Lori those boxes of meat Bryan got sound interesting. I don't think we have those around here. I would be interested to know how the chicken was done. And free breakfast - gourmet too! Yummy.
Chipolte Burgers sound delish Wynne. Poor Les - with his schedule, I'd be cooking him whatever he wants - well, within reason and depending on the weather!
DT - ribeyes are our favorite. So tender and flavorful. Take them anyday over a filet mignon. Also, on the Thai Basil - it definitely has a more pronounced licorice flavor. If you try to make Thai Food with regular basil - it's always as if something is missing.
We're having a Chicken/Broccoli casserole tonight. Going to look around for something with those 2 main ingredients.
    Have a great evening all.

Val, here is a chicken casserole that is a go to for me. Somtimes I add in broccoli, (or spinach, or asparagus), and sometimes I don't. But it's included in the directions.

Yeahhh Lori you have some pretty amazing sounding burgers in your collection. Bookmarked a couple to revisit.
My beau doesn't really do well with spicy foods so chipotle usually steers me away but that's a good idea to do the aioli, that way he can have without and I can have with. Compromise :)
Val, thanks for more info on the Thai Basil.

hey all, I got kicked off when I made my last post.
made chicken brocolli and ziti for dinner and for Becca I used a Gluten free rice pasta. She said it was good. this is day three of her gluten free and I measured her neck yesterday it was 13 inches and today it is just under 12 inches i think we may be on to something. She has an appt with the nutritionist tommorow at 2pm.
put the cover on the pool and now there is water on top of the cover.....not a good sign :(

Good Evening Guys! Quickly read through the posts when I got home pre:dinner and I was getting freaked out with everyone voting for Caraway seeds over the Garlic in the Kraut and Chicken recipe....but...I am here to tell you...it was lovely. It was a really nice recipe and I will totally make it again. I love Sauerkraut and when the recipe said to rinse the kraut, I thought "Sacri-religious"...so I drained it, but I didn't rinse it, and since I didn't have Caraway seeds and didn't beleive that they would have that much flavour anyway...I went with the garlic. I also screwed up the amount of Catalina Salad dressing I put in it and was too heavy handed. The recipe called for 1/2 a bottle, but I put in 3/4 and then tried fairly unsuccessfully to spoon a bit out. It was nice. I'd recommend it. Pretty highly infact for a mid-week easy Crock Pot meal. My only complaint, and that's something I personally have never mastered...is that I always find the meat cooked in a crock pot tastes stewed. I think it's the nature of the beast.
I also got a lot of chuckles over the Tiger Tail Ice Cream debate and I am here to tell you that Tiger Tail is a swirled mix of black licorice and orange ice cream. (Think of the colours) It is devine.
Did you see any covered bridges today Pat? Someday I'll post you a picture of a very famous Canadian Covered Bridge that is close to Ottawa on the Quebec side in Wakefield. It's really pretty. Where did you end up dining? (Thanks for the ice cream too by the way) Your breakfast sounded incredible!
Lori, that's a pretty snazzy breakfast you got served! Very nice! Wish a breakfast fairy would drop in to my work some morning! Panera bread...isn't that the free thing that Laurie won? Nice!
"Hi" Laura. I have something even better for left-overs than my freezer....raccoons. Anything that has gone stale or isn't that tempting gets thrown underneath my bird feeders in the front yard in the evening. Right this moment there are two mounds of very fuzzy moldy raspberries and one stale gourmet pizza crust ripped up into chunks out there. In the morning when I look out it will be gone and I will feel good that the food was not wasted, but helped and was enjoyed by another fellow creature. LOL.
DT, I would love to see your recipe for the Spinach Feta burgers. Sounds very yummy actually. Your dinner sounds awesome.
Wynne....that burger recipe that you posted sounds over the top. Wow. I am so going to try that out soon. Thanks. No wonder hubby requested burgers!
Thanks all for compliments on the pics. I am not a photographer by any stretch and just click the button on my little digital camera and voila, but I do see beauty in every day things and sometimes it all comes out quite nicely.
Hi Val. How did your casserole turn out?
Laurie, that is so awesome that Becca's swelling has gone down. That's so excellent. That is a substantial difference. You totally must be on to something.
I so didn't mean to monopolize this and run on forever and ever, but you had such a nice thread going through and I wanted to comment and share. Only one more thing...and he could have totally posted while I was being so long-winded but...."Pruner Man....Pruner Man...where art thou Pruner Man?"

Stopped by to say HI. Didn't get any tree trimming done. Got paid for the bush hog job the other day so I've been shopping for tires. I'm running on two half baldies in the front. Wear is on the inside so that's going to be an alignment and possibly worn parts replacement for another time. New ones go on the back and the back ones go on the front. But that's not what I wanted to talk about.
I've been cleaning rusty tools and garden tools in an acid bath that works really good. I recommend it as an easy way to clean up those old rusty parts.
The acid comes in a granular form the most potent way. Chemical name is Oxylic or Oxalic Acid. It is the main ingredient in wood or deck cleaner but does a bang up job of removing rust too. I bought a 4 pound bucket at Sherwin-Williams Paint store. They have it but had to special order it. They bought a case and saved me the shipping and handling charges.
Mix up some of the granular acid in a bucket of water and let the rusty items soak for a few hours. You will see a yellow residue build up on the rusty items surface as the chemical works. Remove, rinse, and apply a thin coating of light oil to the items. Steel wool or a white colored scratchy pad for touch up cleaning and residue removal is all that is needed. And from now on remember to clean and oil your tools after use to keep the iron oxide away. What a transformation on the rustiest parts! Something you thought was ready to be thrown away can be rejuvenated with the acid bath.
Don't think the acid will hurt the hands too bad but use heavy rubber gloves anyway.

You can pull a lot more information about Oxalic acid off the internet to double check me.
