Thursday's Trivet

  • chuckieb 9 years ago
Good Morning Everyone! I always liked the word trivet. :)
    Wikipedia says:
A trivet is an object placed between a serving dish or bowl, and a dining table, usually to protect the table from heat or water damage.
Which I knew. But then it goes on to say that:
Trivet also refers to a tripod used to elevate pots from the coals of an open fire (the word trivet itself ultimately comes from Latin tripes meaning "tripod"). Metal trivets are often tripod-like structures with three legs to support the trivet horizontally in order to hold the dish or pot above the table surface. These are often included with modern non-electric pressure cookers. A trivet may often contain a receptacle for a candle that can be lit to keep food warm.
A three-legged design is optimal because it eliminates wobbling on uneven surfaces.
    And I didn't know that. :)
I also don't know what I'm going to make for dinner this evening. I have a Dental cleaning appointment at 1 p.m. and need to grab some more groceries.
Good to see you last night Kimmer. How are things in your world?
Beautiful sunshine outside this morning but cold. Brrrrrrr......
Wishing everyone a most lovely day.

Love the little red trivett. I had a not-as-nice stone one but it has disappeared in one of our many moves.

It is snowing - all the stuff melted yesterday with highs in the 40F range and mushy, soft ground that messes up your shoes. Now a light snow is falling - ground is white but we are only supposed to get a light dusting. It is COLD out, 24F low is also today's high! 9 to 14 degree low tonight. Winds are picking up and not expected to let up tonight. "Brrrrr!" - to quote you! All of our winter has compressed itself into two weeks.

Sunday starts with snow - ice - rain later. We think. Depending on the storm track. Good old Missouri weather.

The popcorn ceiling debate rages on. I want to get rid of it. No one wants to fix it. The solution - Grandsons and manual labor for both of them - well, maybe the one who actually works only. So now I just have to convince the guys to go along with this. It is involved - moving all out of the room and remove the stuff, then put stuff back. Big mess but no popcorn ceiling is a blessing.

Wayne is back from feeding horses so I must scoot. See you later.

I love trivets, Janet. My favourite one is brass and it hangs on the wall next to my kitchen sink. The others are in one of the drawers in one of my china cabinets. Good luck at the dentist and doing errands today.

Tina, How rude of that man, scary really! I am glad you didn't open the door as well. Nice of the Captains of the boats to offer their services for Fred and I also love all the places he will be. I have some of my brother's ashes still here in the house and I find them rather comforting.

Karen, I had this pinned on Pinterest. You might find these tips for removing popcorn ceilings easier.

We have them unfortunately and no way am I am putting up with the mess to remove them! They are all nicely painted now, which is good enough for me.

I don't have a clue what is for dinner tonight either! Oh well lots of time to think on that I will figure something out.

Morning Karen! You have indeed been getting more wintry weather recently alright. It's -17C/1F here at the moment. We have popcorn ceilings as well. We did get rid of the one in the kitchen which I'm glad I did. Our contractor just drywalled over top of it. But we'll leave the rest of the rooms as is. It is indeed a very messy job if you're going to sand them down.
When you decide on dinner let me know Joce. I'm totally out of ideas at the moment. :)

Morning! If someone were to ask me what a trivet was I would have had no clue. Now I know!! Good luck at your dentist appt. today Janet, enjoy your sunny (but cold) day :)

Mushy melted snow does not sound like fun Karen, or anything I'd want to be cleaning off my floors lol! I don't blame you for wanting to get rid of that popcorn ceiling. Who ever thought that looked good? It does sound like it would be a big mess...good luck!

Hi Joce! Great Pin! That looks helpful :) Good luck figuring out dinner!

Yesterday afternoon Michael had an appointment at the Union Hall, where he brought copies of all of our bills and a rough number of our monthly grocery bills. They are supposed to be cutting us a check on Friday based on our bills. We have no clue of how much, it could be $20 or $2000 lol, we just don't know. They also gave us a $100 gift card to Kroger. So I'm going grocery shopping today! Also need to go pick up Briauna's contacts as well. We are supposed to have softball practice tonight, guess it depends on the weather. Going to make chicken and dumplings tonight, perfect for our chilly weather. Hope everyone has a wonderful day :)

So if you didn't know what a trivet was Michelle....what did you call them? Wow! I didn't realize Unions were so generous. Nice on the Kroger Gift card. Chicken and dumplings sound very yummy.

Great idea dry walling over popcorn ceilings, Janet! I would definitely consider doing that over scrapping.

The very best to you and Michael getting a good sized amount from the Union. After all you do pay them!

I have never used a trivet before and don't think I've ever seen anyone use one either. Or I just don't pay enough attention? LOL!

Yes, hopefully the Union will be generous, crossing fingers!!

So what do people use to protect the table when putting out hot casseroles and things there, Michelle? A trivet can be made out of cork, wood or handmade like a quilted potholder or even a ceramic tile. Whatever will protect things from heat/cold/wet.
I wonder if the description of a trivet, hot pad or coaster are about the same?

They say modern ones are pretty well referred to be the same now a days.

Trivet pics are cool. I use some ceramic tiles leftover from the backsplash with felt on the corners to protect the table top. I have a heavy duty wire trivet from Ikea, next to stove. I love it.

Not cranky but groggy as can be. I didn't wake until 1:00 pm. Severe swelling in both feet.

Michelle I hope the check is generous.
    Hello Everyone!!!

Oh okay, I get what a trivet is more now....I don't normally serve food up family style at the table and neither does anyone I know, but I do have the little rubber square pad things to protect your counters. I never use them though, because you can put hot stuff on granite. My mom and MIL just throw down a hot pad on their counters.

Hi Tina! Not sure what's worse, cranky or groggy! Glad you got lots of sleep though :)

    Hello all:)

Today is a slow one as far as work wise..Rick's out working in the yard, and I'm doing office stuff. We went grocery shopping early this morning. So we're all stocked up for a while:) Hope it rains tomorrow like the forecast says:) I am yearning for a cozy weekend so we can have a fire going!

Janet, neat trivets! Love the 3rd one the best:) So that worked pretty well drywall over the popcorn ceiling? I have never heard of that! I thought you had to remove it first! We have popcorn ceilings in the bedrooms and hallway, the rest of the house has vaulted open beam wood ceilings..thank goodness..I really don't like "popcorn"..it's pretty dated, isn't it!

Karen, your getting more snow as well? Man oh man, why aren't we getting any Winter weather? Stay warm:)

Michelle, I do hope the union check is generous. My fingers are crossed as well sweetie...

Joce, I usually use some good thick potholders or some ceramic tiles for placing hot items on the table..AND I have been craving your Easy Excellent Rice Curry lately! I want to make it hopefully this weekend:)

Tina, oh dear on both feel being swollen..you try to stay off of them and elevate them
    Dear lady!

Dinner will be grilled pork chops & chicken and a salad:)

I use trivets or potholders or folded towels depending on how many hot dishes we have and where they are going to be placed. We usually eat in the LR when it is just the two of us. Bad habit. Then we just fill plates from the stovetop. If we have company we use pot holders or trivets to put super hot dishes on.

So glad you are O.K. Tina!

The almost final decision is to remove the entire popcorn ceiling, including the wallboard -- just cut it out and get rid of it. Then either mud the remaining wallboard if it is good enough and not damaged, or attach a layer of planking, which looks like 5 inch boards but is all fake. If it looks nice and not el cheapo, we may use it in the rest of the house. Then again, the LR would look great in the overpriced tin tiles. Planking would look nicer but the plain ceiling would suffice for a guest room. The floor will need extreme measures to make it decent. Maybe it will be done by Christmas 2016! LOL.

SP Marie. We got a dusting of snow, just enough to whiten the ground without totally covering it. Most is blown away now. It is COLD out there. I had been wandering if we would ever see winter, also, but when it arrived finally, it came with a vengeance. A few flurries have started again, don't expect much if any more snow. Just cold.

Looks like Sunday will be icky weather so if Wayne stays overnight, I will probably not go anywhere. Too chicken. I do not do ice. I told him I would not get my Church's chicken fix, but I don't think he was impressed one way or the other. LOL.

The guys are off doing fire department business checking a road that is BAD and the fire trucks are unable to cross the half-washed-away bridge. I will be glad when they return. Would like to see the pictures, though.

We have both noticed Homer has deteriorated lately, on a slow fading away. The feeling is some day he will fall asleep and not wake up. He got outside the yard earlier and could not figure how to get back inside. He has roamed the area around us a million times before with no problem so we think it is another symptom of doggie dementia setting in. He is being watched carefully. He did not eat again today....not a good sign, but sometimes he will get hungry later. So we shall see what we shall see.

I'd take groggy over cranky Tina but hope the mind clears and you emerge through to 'okay'. :) Gentle hugs. Put those feet up. Relax. Breathe.
Working out in the yard would be good for Rick's soul I would think Marie. :) Glad you're all stocked up and I send cozy weekend vibes your way.
Jim's calling me for a Hot Tub. Be back in a bit.

Karen, on dear on Homer..poor guy. I do hope he eats something and gets better.

Janet, yes, it does make Rick happy and zen like when he is out in the yard keeping busy:)
He just left, a contractor's wife just called, their having a problem with their opener. Might need a replacement.
    Enjoy the hot tub:)

Nice on the beam ceilings Marie. I LOVE that.
Hope the guys got the road/bridge fixed up. It'd be nasty weather to be doing that kind of thing though. Poor Homer, and poor you. Just with anyone or anything....as long as he is comfortable and happy you can let nature take its course.
I had my appointment and then Jim and I went to Swiss Chalet for lunch as they were having a 2 can dine for $14.99 special. Quarter Chicken dinners with fries and a roll and dipping sauce. Totally hit the spot. Grabbed some groceries on the way home and popped into the Post office.
Decided on Tacos for dinner. Easy peasy.

So funny! Glad they captured the poor critters. I've seen cattle and horses on the loose but this is a first for a Llama!

We are doing just as Janet said with Homer, letting nature take it s course. And keeping a close eye on him meanwhile to be sure he is O.K. when outside.

Wayne is back. They were getting pictures of the area. It is impossible to get any fire trucks to the scene in this weather or during spring rains. I drove across the bridge once and was never so glad to reach the other side! Yuk.
