Tube Steak Tuesday!

  • chuckieb 8 years ago
GOOD MORNING EVERYONE! :) I was trying and trying to think of a "T" word to put in the Thread title and came across "Tube steak"....."Tube steak?" I thought...."What the heck is that?"....doesn't sound very appetizing".....and it turns out to be another name for a Hot Dog. What a laugh. I've got to try and remember that for the next time I make hot dogs and Jim asks "What's for lunch?". LOLOLOL!
It's a lovely Fall morning here in the Ottawa Valley. Feeling all happy after all the work we got done yesterday. Today we're going out for a few jaunts. It should be a lot of fun.
I've told you we've been working on our family trees. Jim has a photo album from 1915 that belonged to his Grandmother who grew up in Almonte, not far from where we live. On this very day, 100 years ago she took numerous photos at the Almonte Fairgrounds. They used to have a Fall Fair that now has been moved to the summer time. But we're going to go there anyway and take some shots where she took hers and see if we can actually get a good 'duplicate' as it were.
We'll grab dinner somewhere and then this evening we're going to a Book Launch downtown Ottawa. A girl I knew when I was in Grade 4 is an Author. I heard through mutual friends about 5 years ago that she lived in Aylmer, Quebec, which is just across the river from Ottawa. We've connected on-line and Jim, Benjamin and I also went to her very first book launch about 4 years ago. She and I are getting together finally to do lunch next week.
So....pretty much no cooking for me today. Think I'll do Toasted Western's for brekkie.
Jim is out on the back lawn taking a morning stroll with his cup of coffee. There are two turkeys following him hopeful that he has bird seed in his pocket. Alas, they will be disappointed. :)
    Wishing everyone a great day!

LOLFOFL:) You have never heard of a Tube Steak before, Janet!!!:) I have heard that term since I was a kid. Sounds like you have a fun day and evening planned.
We are having leftover Garlic Studded Blade Pork Roast with mashed potatoes, gravy and yellow waxed beans for dinner. A nice comfort food for us. I have a few errands to do today.
A big welcome to all the newcomers!
    Wishing everyone a wonderful day!

Janet..I kindof remember some sort of a joke about tube steak..."chuckle" And it wasn't about a hot dog.ROTFLOL:-D Sorry..I just had to..couldn't help myself:-D
That is just so very cool that you have a photo album of pics that were taken 100 years ago! I think history is just the best thing ever:) Especially family history!

Joce, looks like you know what I'm talking about re: "tube steak" ROTFLOL again:-D
Oh my gosh..It sure feels good to laugh! Especially since I'm FIFTY NINE today:( Waaaaaahhhhhhhh! Next year it's the BIG 60....I did get a new TV out of it though:) Bigger and better..it will be nice to watch DA this season! LOL

Rick wants to take me to http://www.forcellabistro.com/ for dinner..He's all excited about the "2 for Tuesday" and it's seafood! Hello, I don't care for shrimp! I can order anything naturally, but he seems to think I would want to have seafood WITH shrimp for my BD dinner..I just don't understand him at times...sigh...

Well, I need to get this day started! Have a lovely Tuesday everyone..and yes, welcome to the newcomers!

I saw the thread title, and I'm like tube steak..hmm..I heard of that, but could not remember what it was! Hot dogs, ok- I get it now! haha! Enjoy your trip to Almonte and have fun at the book launch Janet! :)
Hi Joce! Your dinner wounds wonderful!
Yesterday I didn't eat dinner, I was one or two ingredients away from everything I wanted to make, so the kids had hot dogs, Pete had some frozen noodle bowl thingy from the freezer. And I went back to the store, and I am still short on a few things! At least Pete works across the street from the Superstore, so I'll send him there after work. I took out chicken tenders to make Thai chicken and noodles, and I still have some pork chops to cook up. So at least I have dinner figured out for a couple of days, lol.
Wishing you all a great day!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOUUUUUU!!!!
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR MARIEEEEEEEE.....
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!
Happy Birthday Marie! I changed my Avatar and baked you a cake. :) LOL! :) Have a most lovely day. Nice on the new Television! As you say, all the better to watch Downton with! LOL @ a tube steak joke. I can totally imagine! LOLOLOL! Have a great birthday dinner wherever you do end up. I split a gut when you said scallops were way too round. ROFLROFLROFL! Ah dear.....
Ugh on being short ingredients Shona. It's a VERY common problem as we all well know. :) Both Thai chicken and pork chops sound yummy.
Last night I'd planned to have egg rolls on the side of the Thai chicken skewers but when I looked I could only find two. So I switched and decided to make up some frozen dumplings that I'd bought at Costco instead. We'd already had some out of the bag and the bag has been frozen solid, but when I pulled them out they had a 'bad' smell to them. After some humming and hawing we threw them out. Not sure how they could have gone bad in the freezer exactly and they hadn't been in there that long. In the end we just had the skewers with edamame and a bit of kimchi. It was enough. :)

Thank you Shona...I remember turning 40, that was a big one for me..had a blast at a big BD party/dinner with lots of family & friends..now, I think I'll just stick my head in the sand when I turn 60:-D And yes, it HAS got to be a guy think..but he's know me for many, many years and knows of my dislike for shrimp..so I just don't get it! LOL!!!!!!!!

HA! I LOVE my FSW BD cake Janet! I have to admit, I feel like FSW today, just cause it's my BD and I can:) You always get me and my so called sense of humor..I like that:) You have to agree though...aren't scallops just "too" round? LOL Thank you for the cake and for the HB wishes:)

I have heard the work tube steak before, but didn't know it was a hot dog!! Too funny! Cool on you going to the place Jim's grandmother took pictures to try and recreate the shots, that should be fun :) Also neat on meeting up with such an old friend for lunch! Lol at the turkeys :P LOVE MARIE'S BIRTHDAY CAKE!!

Happy birthday Marie!! Yum on that menu, and look, they will even do zucchini noodles in place of pasta if you want, now that's my kinda place!! I too am not a huge scallop fan, but it has been a while since I've had them, so I need to give them a try to make sure :P Hope you have the best day!

Ahh too cool, we can have a huge party in the ODD for you and Marie next year Shona! Fun! Thai chicken and noodles sound great, recipe?

Taking it easy today, my last week has been crazy and I need some relax time!! Bri is starting pitching lessons tonight, but Michael said he wants to take her so I'll stay here and make dinner for when they get back. I pulled out a package of bone in chuck steak. Not sure what to make with it yet though! I do know that I'm about to make Greek Salad With Lemon Viniagrette for lunch though, finally got a cucumber lol! Have a great day everyone :)

    Hello everyone, welcome newbies.

Went and got my nails done. Angie did a beautiful job. Gold sparkle leopard spots on two nails and shell pink ovals on the rest.

Tube steaks is funny term. Hot dogs are a guilty pleasure. I want a chili dog badly.

Happy Birthday Marie! I do hope you can find something yummy at the restaurant. Loving Janet's cake tribute, too cute

I'm starving. I think I'll be heating up some leftovers asap. My Liv wasn't here to eat her share.

It is so humid and muggy today. I want the fall air to show up. Probably be a month before that happens. Maybe some apple cider would trick my brain into an Autumn state of mind.

    Happy cooking everyone..

Have a nice relaxing day today Michelle. You so deserve it. I've got to go buy some cucumbers myself today to make some more Gazpacho.
Cool on your nails Tina. :) Ugh on the humidity. Shall try persuade our nice cool Fall air to blow your way. :) I've been thinking I should pick up some apple cider myself. Mmmm...

I want to learn how Urban Comfort fixed their cucumbers. So good. A quick pickle style with onions. Janet, your killing me with the gazpacho. I love the stuff.

Michelle, you DO deserve a break. Phew. School, teams, scouts and family.

Since I saw Laurie apple picking, cider sounds perfect and I'm craving a big glass.

Goodness at all the jocularity today. You all are wearing out the capital letters on your keyboards - ha ha. Cute cake, Janet.

"Tube steak" I never heard of, new one here. Hot dogs, well - I like Hebrew National but they cost a bit more than I want to spend on a lowly frankfurter. Speaking of costs, has anyone priced turkey lately? I haven't, but was told the bird flu epidemic has driven up price of turkey to rival steak. I haven't bought much meat lately (freezer full of game and such) but am running low now and will have to pick up some at the commissary soon.

Happy birthday, Marie! Happy almost-birthday, Shona. I may just chill some cherry-apple cider and have it soon, Tina....it does sound good. Maybe even pick up some apple cider for Saturday along with pumpkin pie....you have inspired me.

Michelle, you make me tired thinking of all the running around you do. Hi, Joce.

Went to exercise class late because I remembered the wrong time. Will go Thursday ON TIME. Not sure what I think of it but will give it a shot. They move quickly to (too loud) fast music -- I think I'm showing my age. LOL! SO I called Wayne and went to Rotary with him.

No rain. Grass needs mowing but it is so dry. My lavender plants in the pots keeled over but I think it is that time of year. IF MY GARDEN GETS DONE I can plant them in the ground. Aargh! Most of my veggie plants are ready to die out for the winter. Ah, so. I need to dry the sage - stevia - oregano just to say I did it. Hope to do the pepper jelly if I have enough sugar.

    Have a nice day, all!

    Hey everyone!
Yes we went apple picking and of course Rachel insisted we needed to get the big basket of apples. Not sure what I am going to do with all the apples. I made an apple crisp for desert tonight.
I may make applesauce but I dread peeling them!
Dinner tonight is chicken sausages with potatoes and peppers and onions.
Another job interview tomorrow wish me luck.!
I also don't really care for scallops because of the texture. I do love them wrapped in bacon though! They are very very expensive around here! Frank likes them so sometimes I like to make a seafood stir fry and add them but they were over $20 a pound.

Karen, I heard there is a turkey and a fresh pumpkin shortage! I have three in the deep freeze left to cook. So I'm good on turkey. Hebrew Nationals are 7.19 a package. That is high. Cheaper to go to Coney Island and get a bite of St Pete history.

Marie, I do think you are the only one to know the joke. :-D

Laurie, good luck on your quest for Apple recipes....there are several good ones on GR. I like to sauté sliced apples and add brown sugar or maple syrup, just a dab, to sweeten it a bit. Bought some apples the other day and must use them soon.

We set out game cameras today to look for wild hogs evidence. Hoping to track their trails and deal with them later. A large black boar has been hanging around the neighbor's three female pigs and they have escaped several times to run with him.

Tina, I think I have a turkey in the freezer but am not sure. Hebrew National costs abut 5.98 the last time I shopped for them. Don't know about pumpkins, my plants are too late to produce any so will have to buy them.

Mel and Trouble are on my lap. Trouble finally decided to settle down after rubbing my face and trying to check out my glass of water. Mel is perturbed because I required the use of my arm so he couldn't tuck his head under it. Life is sometimes unfair. Ha ha. Blondie is on the window sill chowing down on the cat food the cats refuse to eat unless they are starving. He is so funny.

Guess I best go. See you all tomorrow.

Marie - I have heard of tube steaks before - and I think I know the same joke as you. I was in about 6th grade when a group of "ornery" boys brought up tube steaks.....

Chuckieb - how cool of you going to take photos in the same spot as Grandma did 100 yrs ago. Your pictures are going to be far easier to take!! ;)

HeeHee on the "tube steaks" chatter. I live three towns away from the Quincy plant , and have a friend that works there . They are very strict about the way things are done. The meat for the dogs must be blessed by a Rabbi , and if for some reason he does not show up , they will not make them . Only the best is used , no subs , or fillers . The plant does not run on any Jewish holidays . A lot of the workers use vacation time for them , so still get paid . He gets a huge discount for cases at the plant , and gifts me several times with two or three packages . They really are so good. I am pretty sure I would not pay the price they charge at the store very often . It does seem pretty funny to pay any where from $ 5.50 - $ 7.00 for some hot dogs.

I will say hello to every one here , and want you to know , that I read this thread every day . Still trying to figure out all the names , and get confused a lot of the time . I probably will not comment too much here , but love reading what every one is doing . I live a very mundane , boring life , and am pretty sure you all don't want to hear about me building steering columns for busses and heavy equipment. LOL . I sure hope you don't mind my peeking in everyday . Have a great day ! lump :)
