Tuesday's Taste Buds

Good Morning Everybody! It's a lovely blue sky but chilly morning here.
I'm going to join Jim at their company Pub lunch today.
    http://www.chefandbrewer.com/pub/bridge-cambridge/s6335/#menu
Haven't walked there from our apartment before and you all know how directionally challenged I am so we'll see if I manage to find my way. LOL! :)
Jim and I are thinking of going to our fave Dumpling Shop for dinner this evening.
    http://www.yelp.ca/biz/zhonghua-traditional-snacks-cambridge
After lunch I'd like to head down town and maybe go visit the Fitzwilliam Museum again. There's a book for sale in their Gift Shop that might be nice for Jim for Christmas. :)
For the Downton Abbey Fans amongst you....(and I already told Joce about this!) I peeked into the grounds of Corpus Christi College last week. (Pic below) Turns out that's where Hugh Bonneville (Lord Grantham) went to school. Fun eh! :)
    Joce....any news on your friends?
How are you feeling this morning Tina? (Love the ODD Avatar pic!)
Hope your weather cools off a little for you Karen so it's more pleasant for your shopping trip today. LOL @ your Arthritis hip weather predictor. :)
To everyone else, have a most wonderful Tuesday!

I gifted my neighbor with a couple of the yellow squash we were given, and 1 loaf of Honey Zucchini Bread I made yesterday. There are 7 loaves in the freezer. Winter will be well supplied with zucchini bread. The overflow loaf is wrapped and on the counter. I have not used self rising flour before. Picked some up by accident so looked up some recipes for it.

It is supposed to be in the 90's today. Should be a fun trip. NOT. Probably will pick up large sweet tea on the way home. Most fast food restaurants have it available, so I mix it with regular to cut the sweetness. (And calories). I use stevia at home. But it is sugar when we are out, unless they have a saccharin based sweetener. (I know the powers that be insist it is carcinogenic but I think aspartame and Splenda are worse for you so will take my chances. LOL. )

Rain is North of I 70 so we won't be getting any. Could use some but it won't be for another week. Hot and dry. So glad we got the 1 1/2 inches on Saturday. Channel 3 weather said this year copied 2000 with its weather patterns, and that December was one of the snowiest we ever had. It could prove interesting.

O.K. my coffee is cooling so I better get moving so I can get something done this morning. Have a great day, all.

That's excellent you're starting to pack the freezer for winter Karen. I think it's Stevia I have growing in my herb garden. Benjamin and I used to be keen on herbal teas made out of fresh herbs and I bought a 'sweetener' herb at one point. Fun.
Just got back from lunch. Indeed I got lost and it took almost an extra half hour to get there but I wasn't late. :) Had a hamburger and fries at the Pub. And a cider. :)

Good morning! Your lunch spot today has a great looking menu!! I'd have the 10 oz. Ribeye with Sweet Potato Fries :) Yum on the dumpling shop! I'm not sure how accurate that site is, but it says only opened on Mondays and Wednesdays? That can't be right!
Hi Karen. I have never worked with self rising flour before but isn't it just flour with the added baking powder and salt? I'm pretty sure, and I think I have had to make my own self rising flour for a while back for a recipe calling for it when I didn't have it. Too cool on having all that zucchini bread stocked up. We finally got some rain yesterday, a very small amount, but it was something at least!
The boys and girls are splitting up today. Bri needs a couple more pairs of school shoes so we are hitting up a couple stores, then we are going grocery shopping. The boys are getting their hair cuts and getting the car inspected, boring! Glad I'm not going lol! I am going to give a try a lobster tonight!! I noticed last week HEB had some really nice looking wild caught lobster tails, so I will grab some today, hopefully they still have them, and give this recipe a go Roasted Brussels Sprouts And Lobster Hash and serve with these

I LOVE your avatar pic!!! You both look like you're having the best time! You look beautiful:) What a grand college..the architecture of the older buildings is amazing:) Have fun at the museum:)

Karen, wow on all of the Zucchini Bread in your freezer! That's excellent! I am looking forward to buying a freezer for the garage when we get it all cleaned and everything in it's place..I'd love to have a freezer full of yummy baked goods etc:)

I have to get the oil changed in my SUV, then off to the muffler shop for a new muffler..I'm sure I will have a MUCH better time than Janet is having in England today..sigh
    LOL!

Rick is going to the outskirts of Oroville to check on a job coming up in a week or 2..a 16x10 door..it's a tall sucker..and opener....he was referred by a plumber and he doesn't know who this plumber is..we love referrals though, means the word is getting around:)

O.K. this is ridiculous - GR ate my entire post again Grrr! Couldn't be operator head space, of course not!

Finished overhauling kitchen counters, a herculean task. Cherry tomatoes and peppers are in the refrigerator. Zucchini are too big so will have to be grated and frozen. Washed dishes that didn't fit in the DW. The island is a disaster because anything that needs sorting is now on it until I can find time to do that.

I have a loaf of Z bread that needs to be kept fresh until Thursday. It is wrapped and will go the the refrigerator. Hope it is still good then. I have to pick up grapes, Hawaiian bread rolls, deli meats and cheese for Thursday lunch. She is bringing a salad. I thought the make-your-own sandwich thingies (technical term) would be nice along with a recipe I found on AR. You use ultra fancy toothpicks and spear chunks of stuff on them - I thought about grapes -- prosciutto wrapped around mozzarella cheese, or maybe goat cheese on some instead -- a spinach or arugula leaf or baby sweet pickle. If anyone has another idea I would love to hear it. Dessert - probably brownies since most people like them and there are some decent mixes out there (lazy day, I have a fantastic brownie recipe but time is not enough to make it).

A.C. is back to his old self. He is totally rotten and into everything. He and Mel will be locked in another part of the house Thursday because of table jumping (Mel) and possible scratching (A.C.) behaviors. Plus I don't know if they are "cat people."

Wayne should be home shortly so I guess I had better get dressed or he will wonder what I've been doing all morning. He is always ready to move out NOW whenever we go to Springfield. See you all later.

Michelle....THANK YOU! I hadn't noticed the hours of Zhonghua and thought one of our last visit's it was pretty much open all the time. You saved us a walk! We'll have to push that 'til tomorrow night! Have fun shopping with Bri.
Thanks for all the compliments Marie. :) You can buy a new freezer from the sales of all the goodies you're going to weed out of the garage right? :) Hope your oil change and muffler job went fine. I do admit I wouldn't trade my day. :)
What kind of occasion are you preparing for on Thursday Karen? I've seen little skewers of caprese salad, boccocini, a basil leaf, cherry tomato. Glad to hear A.C. is all better.
I had a nice walk but I'm tuckered. I've put a lot of miles in today. Had a nice visit at the Fitzwilliam Museum and did buy that book for Jim. Bought some cute little boxes of chocolates at "Thornton's" for gifts for people back home and did a bit of shopping as well down in the Market area.

Janet, I was hoping you might try the STILTON & PEPPERCORN MUSHROOMS (V)
Sautéed button mushrooms on a garlic toasted muffin with a Stilton and pepper sauce. Finished with crumbled Stilton for lunch for a starter and the ROAST BEEF & HORSERADISH sandwich had your name all over it too! Then again they might have had specials for Jim's company at the Pub today? I would like to try the SLOW-COOKED PORK BELLY Succulent pork belly served with mashed potato, braised red cabbage and sweet baked apple. Finished with a rich red wine sauce. I have never had pork belly and I know I would like it. Enjoy your dinner tonight and as Michelle says I hope they are open? Maybe they could change the hours they are open on that site? Maybe give them a call and see if they are open? What about Cocum?

Karen, Wow that is a big bunch of zucchini loaves, you put in the freezer! I used to have a good size veggie garden on the farm and I canned or froze everything! I remember one particular good growing year, I only had to buy things like paper towel etc. and dry goods plus a few fresh things b/c we almost had everything we needed. I found it very satisfying when I had things put away for when the prices skyrocketed in the winter. Oh to be that young again! LOL I don't think that will happen! I would love to have all my health back and the energy too! Only in my dreams:)

Michelle, You are quite correct about the self rising flour already having salt and baking powder in it. Now I am wondering if Karen had a problem with that one recipe b/c she added extra things to make it rise allover her oven? llrecipes.com/recipe/self-rising-flour/ I have never seen it for sale here as most people make their own. You are killing me with your dinner it! It sounds awesome!

Marie, Hey referrals are the best compliment in a business I think:) You were saying things had slacked off a bit. I bet soon you both will be busier than you think!

My friend Madge who had the stroke only has 25% vision in both eyes and that is permanent and can not be reversed. She will never be able to drive again:( Her speech and mobility may improve within six months to a year? She will be going into a special place in Ottawa to stay for physiotherapy and rehabilitation to help her get back up and going again. She doesn't want any visitors until she gets a wee bit better, poor woman. She is a very proud strong stubborn person and I know she will try to beat this if she can?. She has very strong support from her hubby and family which is very important to me. Once she is settled in her new temporary physio home in Ottawa, I will go visit her there. No new on Gary yet. I feel for Liz so much, b/c she will want to be able to see Gary as soon as she was able to move after her surgery. No doubt the doctors, nurses and family would be at least be able to wheel her around to see him. My BIL had both hips done at the same time and they had him up and walking the next day. Brain cancer can be so fast, especially after it is found and diagnosed to be terminal. My brother passed away with it after it was diagnosed in under a week. I hope Gary is not in any pain and they are keeping him comfortable. Awful to say, but it is just a matter on time.
LOL On the lighter side I finally had a little bowl of Fresh Peach Crisp and it is AWESOME! Dinner tonight is chicken something? I wonder if I have any dried minced onion to make Onion Soup Mix
like Points did for his IMI review on French Onion Chicken it looks delicious! I think Den would like that? It is a little over 1:30 PM here I better start doing something:)

Hoping everyone has a good day!

Ya, we had a set lunch menu to choose from as we were a large group for lunch today so there wasn't anything truly exciting on it. :(
Joce, how could you possibly remember me mentioning a restaurant we went to last March? Your memory freaks me out. Poor Madge. Goodness. That's a lot to deal with but I'm happy she has a good support network alright. I just can't even imagine how it is for your friend Gary. Just can't even imagine. That Peach Crisp you made looks to die for.
Gentle hugs Tina. Kielbasa and perogies are on the top of my fave list, you know that. :)
    Rest GF.
Had dinner at a Thai Pub. Super good. Had a very spicy Pork dish that warmed us to our toes. (It's cool this evening)
Walked a million miles today and am fading fast. Night all. Sleep sweet Kimmer (saw the pics of your Grandson heading off to school.....toooooo cute!)

Janet, Congrats on all that hiking around today. Bless your heart with the directions and getting turned around. Surely makes the walk a bit longer. The spicy pork dish sounds awesome. Thai Pub is a funny concept.

Joce, you do have a remarkable memory. Nice searching on cool ideas for Karen. I love skewered foods, somehow they seem more festive. Again, healing thoughts for your friends. I'm so sorry for their misfortune.

Karen, I hope you survived all the shopping. You are the better woman. I have tried to get good iced tea out & about and just don't like it. It always tastes musty and old. I like my sun tea. Momma used liquid saccharin. I remember the bottle on the table all my youth. I'm using stevia powder these days. Add your arthritic hip with my battered and beaten right knee and we can out weather the weatherman.

Marie, that is one huge door to install. I heart the referral for Rick. Nice to have that happen and I hope it continues. How are you holding up in the heat? I'm constantly thinking cool thoughts.

Michelle, glad you like the fig recipes for paleo. I do have two big boxes of figs. I'm making the spinach salad with fig dressing soon, maybe tomorrow. Another part of me just wants to make a big cheese tray with toasted walnuts, grapes and figs. The most romantic meals that Fred and I have shared at home were usually a cheese tray with all the goodies and a nice bottle of red wine. Listening to music....Nat King Cole, Chris Isaak, Aaron Neville, Seal, Doobie Brothers, Chicago, Santana and others.
Fred is getting his other eye done this Thursday and then on Monday he has a colonoscopy. My MRI is the 29th, with contrast and without.

Two Ingredient cake smells yummy. Large can of crushed pineapple mixed with an Angel Food cake mix, bake at 350 degrees in UNGREASED 13 x 9 pan for 28-30 minutes.

And I'm making trash bars....2 sleeves of Ritz crackers smashed to pieces, mixed with a bag of Heath toffee pieces and one can of sweetened condensed milk, pressed into buttered 8 x 8 and baked 350 degrees foe 20 minutes. Topped with whipped chocolate cream cheese frosting.

The Kielbasa is in the crockpot with a bag of rinsed sauerkraut. The onions are on super low in the pan just waiting for the pierogies.

Fred is sleeping....I'm sure he will waken when he smells the cake aroma.

Two desserts in one day is ridiculous I know, but I can't decide what would be my perfect nibble, fruity or chocolate toffee. My tongue is raw from all the lime bars......I guess you are not supposed to have 3 in a row. (70 calories ea). I didn't eat much yesterday. I'm really hungry today. Hurry up, Fred wake up, will ya?

I saw a recipe while scrolling around using zucchini. A chocolate zucchini cake?

    Hey all
Tina I've made that cake many a time and topped with fat free cool whip. Brought it to a BBQ once where there was a table full of deserts and it was the only thing wiped clean.
Took Rachel to another orthopedic for her back. She is in pain all the time. He was running late we waited an hour and a half. Ugh! He told her she could not do field hockey tryouts :( looks like it could be a stress fracture. He ordered an MRI. She texted the coach and told her and said she would still like to be part of the team and asked if there was any way. Coach said come to try outs she can use the help. And they will talk about it. I think Rachel will be team mgr or something. She said her health is important and it's better to have to sit out your jr year than your senior year. Doctor said the same thing.
Got home so late I had cereal and fruit for dinner lol

OH Laurie, sorry to hear Rachel's back is hurting so much. She is much too young for that kind of pain. I'm glad her coach is sympathetic. Thanks for the thumbs up on the pineapple angel food cake. I'm hoping the family approves. I did not get fat free cool whip. I wonder if powdered sugar will suffice. I have some dried pineapple that I could soak in the demon rum? Johnny Depp would approve. LOL

I think I over rinsed my sauerkraut. it was not tart enough. The kielbasa was yummy.

I over did my cooking and energy level. I'm heading to bed and Chopped on TV.

    Sleep sweet.

10:20 and we just got home.
Bass Pro was awesome. Whenever I get my cell phone photos on my computer I will upload a picture. The entrance has a waterfall and taxidermied elk (I think) fighting to the side. A Siberian wolf greets you if you get off the elevator on the first floor. I did not go down to see the alligator. The 5 ft long gar (fish) swam behind aquarium windows. The turtles were doing whatever turtles do. When you check out, the ceiling is painted like water with leaves on top. The ceiling is 4 ft thick made to look like dirt with roots growning through. I found a dehydrator so the excess cherry tomatoes will head there tomorrow.

Joined Sam's Club and now can get their gas when we are in town - 3.11 per gallon, 18 cents less than home. Of course, we only stop when in Springfield area, it is almost 100 miles away.

think I will use the Bloody Mary Caprese Skewers tomorrow. The heathershelping blog is interesting - I will have to check it again.

    See you tomorrow. I

Back again. I'm having computer posting issues! Here is the rest of the post!

Thank you all for the recipe ideas. I appreciate them.

Tina - trash bars sound scrumptious. And not too hard to make. My favorite kind of recipe! I made chocolate zucchini bread, chocolate zucchini cake, and zucchini brownies last year. I may make one for the next church potluck or to give to the lady who keeps me supplied with giant zucchini. They are very good.

I found a 30 inch high, stainless steel bar stool at Bed Bath & Beyond, plus a cookbook stand to use when making a recipe so you don't get the book dirty. The bar stool will come in handy when I am in the kitchen, grating a ton of zucchini. I love iced coffee, so I got a small ice cube tray to freeze leftover coffee in so the coffee stays cold but does not get diluted. It was a good shopping day at Bed Bath & Beyond.

We also went to Sam's Club for the first time. It is interesting to see pallets of stuff stacked all over the place.

Laurie - hope Rachel's back improves soonest. I know stress fractures are not uncommon in children, but they sure can hurt. Good for her contacting the coach.

I am tired. The couch is littered with packages and my LR is a total disaster. So I need to get moving, copy the things for the recipe, I need to get at the commissary, and go to bed.
