Tutti-Frutti Tuesday!

  • chuckieb 9 years ago
Good Morning Everybody! Thought "Tutti-Frutti" sounded fun. I could totally do with a smoothie right now. (Although it's still cold....brrrrrr) 11C/51F
    http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/tutti-frutti-smoothie-10000000223774/
I think for dinner this evening I'm going to make Pan-fried Haddock, fresh steamed green beans and
    Corn,avocado And Tomato Salad
Marie.....I'm mowing today.....you? :) You'd think with all the dry weather you guys have been having your grass wouldn't be growing very quickly. Didn't hear from you yesterday. Imagine you're busy!
Chatted with Benj for a short while on-line this morning. I MISS HIM! Goodness he's far away. Sigh. But he sounds good. He's about to file his Taiwan tax return and is expecting a refund which is always nice and with it he is hoping to take a vacation to the Philippines. Which I will worry about shortly. :) He's looking forward to a visit from three girls from Korea that will be in Taipei in a couple of weeks time. They speak Esperanto so Benj is their Tour Guide in Taipei before they head to Kaoshiung where Benjamin's friend Reza will take over as the guide. And then he brushed me off as he said he has a date this evening so had to go get ready.
Michelle, that's fun you made the Aspargus and Chicken dish last night. It's so good eh! :)
You did indeed have a long, busy day yesterday Karen! Hope you managed to get a good sound sleep. Marie was doing a rain dance in here a couple of days ago so we'll try make it reach you as well. :)
How did your dinner turn out Joce? How does Potato Dauphinoise differ from Scalloped Potatoes? Does it?
Tina....are you still with us or did you have to head back to ER?
Wishing everyone a really good day.

Janet: Kindly fix me one of whatever is in the above photos - it is 6:39 and I am so-o-o-o sleepy but couldn't sleep any more. Wayne has a meeting in town and will be gone for much of the day. Homer (our Aussie) is outside meandering about checking for whatever. One of the barn cats is rubbing him and following him around the yard. Very peaceful. Very quiet. Very serene. Very much wanting to doze off!

The cabinet people are coming this morning to finish the pass thru and install a shelf they haven't put in yet. OH - AND MY ISLAND IS READY also! Then the kitchen will be complete. I'll try to send a photo some of these mornings.

Thanks for the boomeranging of the rain dance effect from Marie. We are due for some late Wednesday night so all rain-vibes are willingly accepted. I thought of doing a rain dance here but decided the cinnamon raccoon would probably die laughing so maybe not. Wouldn't want to shock the local wildlife. LOL.

The raccoon is getting bolder. It patiently waited by the corner of the house while Wayne's buddy fed cats and watered plants while we were gone. As soon as he left the porch, Mr. Raccoon sauntered back. There is a mousey kind of dark gray color one (very unusual, matches my kitchen walls but he is NOT moving inside) hanging around lately who is smaller and very pretty.

I'm not sure who Benji is. But his life style sounds intriguing. It must be fascinating to live in Taiwan and vacation in the Philippines! We loved the time we spent in Germany. But that isn't like living there permanently.

OK it is past time to get off my duff and do something constructive. Dishes are waiting in the sink since I didn't want to bother last night. Am now paying the price for the procrastination. I have to clean the kitchen before the cabinet people get here. Just too darn tired to bother with it last night.

I smell coffee. Wayne is the coffee maker here - mine is so strong you can skate on it.

    Bye.

Morning Karen. Ugh on not enough sleep. Jim and I were up earlier than usual this morning as he had a call he had to take at 6 a.m. but I slept pretty well so don't feel too bad. Great that your kitchen will be all done. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures. Benjamin (or Benj....not Benji as that sounds like the movie dog from back in the '70's) :) is my only child. He graduated University and moved to Taiwan to teach English over a year and a half ago. He wants to go back to University in Asia in a year or two and become a Translator. Savour that coffee. Good luck with the dishes. :)

Janet, Cute name for the thread and here is the first song that came to mind
    for it:)

Your dinner sounds Yummy! I wish Den would eat fish. I love haddock, cod and pickerel etc. Strange he will eat fish sticks, but they have gone down hill terribly over the years! Now they seem to have 90% crumbs! I should make my own and see if he will eat them some day? Ben should have a great time in the Philippines. Don't worry Mom:) He is going to be alright. He is young and exploring the world and following his dreams. Remember that elderly lady with the cookie jar with the words “What If” on it? 98% of the time “What If” doesn't happen:) Nice he is going to be able to use Esperanto and be the Visitor's Guide:)
I don't think Potato Dauphinoise differs much from Scalloped Potatoes IMHO. It is just a fancy way to say scalloped potatoes, I guess:) The only things I did differently last night was to use cream instead of milk and added some garlic with Gruyere Cheese. I think Jamie's recipe for them is really cool, but I am not sure about putting a whole can of anchovies in there? I didn't make his, but I will be temped to make them like he does sometime. http://www.jamieoliver.com/videos/jamie-s-quick-potato-dauphinoise
Did you see on the news where Grand Bend and Niagara and other areas were hit by a Tornado yesterday? Scary eh!
Karen, I will do my best to send a good rain your way, with no funnel clouds, as well:) I do hope that raccoon stays away from your farm now. LOL would not have been so kind to that rat:) He/she would be six feet under fast, not just far far away:) Great to hear your kitchen is almost complete! I bet it is gorgeous! Yes pics please:)

Marie and Michelle what are you up to today?

Tina? I am very worried about you!

I have a whole loaf of French Bread, I forgot about and now it is getting hard! I am going to make Dynamite Garlic Soup
with it to use it all up. Later on I will drop off some of it to my GF who is under the weather with an awful cold. I should also make some cookies or something sweet for her too! Den has requested Wiener Schnitzel My Way for dinner and I want to check out The Farm Kids Stand to see what they have when I am out. Then maybe we will have corn on the cob with new potatoes with that?

Hoping everyone has a great day!

LOL Joce. I should get up and dance to that song so I warm up a bit! :)
You should make some homemade fish sticks for Den one day. I bet they'd taste way better than the boxed ones. Love Gruyere cheese. No, I didn't notice that a Tornado hit Niagara. My BIL and family live in St. Catharines. OHHHHHHH.....I would kill for a bowl of your Garlic soup right now. Love that recipe. So nice of you to drop some over to your GF. It'll be well received that's for sure! That's great you're going to visit your Farm Kids. I think you must be feeling a little better today. I can hear it in your 'type'. :)
Gentle hugs Tina. Glad you have a Dr.'s appnt. I was thinking about you last night. I was going through some old food magazines in my basement and came across a "Bon Appetit" from July 1987. They did an article on "Fabulous Ice Cream". One they have a recipe for is "Lime-Coconut" which I thought sounded pretty intriguing. A lot of the recipes call for 8-12 egg yolks. I don't remember using so many eggs when I made ice cream years ago but I very well may have forgotten.

Janet - we have one child also Our daughter works at an assisted care center and would stay forever if she could get full time. She works 11-7 shift. The bite from A.C. resulted in overkill by the DR. He of course prescribed antibiotics but also sent her to the ER where they did a bunch of unnecessary tests so we will have a sizeable bill.

Our family DR. was good - he held off tests until absolutely needed. Hoping the person they hire to replace him will also be of that philosophy.

The rat was not released as I thought. It is now deceased. There are cute rats and their are icky rats. This one was cute-ish if a rat can be said to be cute. But a rat is a rat is a rat is a rat, so it is no more. No critters captured in the trap last night. Raccoons are terribly smart animals and can break into / out of many traps. I have been solemnly promised that the cinnamon one will NOT be killed or removed since he is so rare. I almost feel like we own the darn critter.

Joce - Garlic soup sounds wonderful. But i think it is going to be Motrin for the back and as soon as I sweep the floor, prop up my ankle to get the swelling down. Ah, the joys of growing old!

Tina - take care. Keep us posted.

    Hi to all. Back later.

Morning! Your dinner sounds sounds nice and light tonight Janet! Sounds like Benj is good, cool on his trip to the Phillipines, don't worry Mama, I'm sure he'll be just fine :) So glad you recommended the chicken asparagus dish, it was awesome!
Yay on your kitchen being almost done Karen! Can't wait to see the photos!!
Okay I figured the potatoes were liked scalloped Joce, it is a cool name though! I would be a little weary about that whole can of anchovies as well :S Can you bring me some of the soup too? :)
Hi Tina, good luck at the doctor today.
    Hi Marie, Bye Marie :P
Got a call from my eye doc. that my glasses are ready. EEEeek, here we go, wear them for one week then I'll be getting my surgery! My stomach is getting queasy thinking about it :S Gotta make a Sam's trip today, I can't believe I am completely out of butter. Dinner is sauteed shrimp in butter, garlic, lemon juice, and red pepper flakes over angel hair pasta. Maybe some kind of veggie on the side. Have a wonderful day everyone!

Hi Marie! Good luck with Rick's appointment!
Karen, I must have missed something. Did A.C. bite your daughter while you were away? I've only seen one rat in my life time. Crawling out of a sewer drain on a rainy night down town. It was of the icky variety. Take care with your housework and easy on the ankle!
Try not be nervous about your eye surgery Michelle. Easier said than done I know but the apprehension is the hardest part I think. Have fun at Sam's.
Finished mowing so the entire yard is good for the next week or so. It was good weather to mow in though that's for sure. Yard looks good. Think I'll do a little garden maintenance in the afternoon.

So Cute, Michelle:) I had to giggle out loud at you calling, Janet a Mama:) We don't hear that here and it is just tickled my funny bone:) Don't worry your surgery won't hurt a bit and you will be able to see without needing glasses anymore:) YUM ! You dinner sounds delightful:)

Good luck a the the doctor today, Tina

Marie, I hope all goes well with Rick's appointment as well.

Karen, I only have one child as well. My son is in the Marina Business. I don't see him much as he is always very busy and my Granddaughters keep him very busy as well. Take care of your back and leg. Sending some virtual Garlic soup to make you feel better.

Janet, "Lime-Coconut" ice cream sounds lovely!

The soup is simmering away and the whole house smells marvelous!
Sending a big bowl of it to everyone! It will heal you like chicken soup and keep vampires and germs away! LOL It might also keep other people away:)

Am running out of steam. Just have sweeping outside left to do and I can call it a day. And prepping for dinner of course. :)
Kind of cool we have a bunch of 'one child' families in ODD. I think the majority of couples still have more than one. I had a bowl of leftover meatball soup for my lunch but I'd still have room for a bowl of your garlic soup Joce.

It is kind of cool that several of us are one-child-only families.

To clear up confusion - yes, A.C chomped down on her finger. As clear as she can figure, when she dropped a towel she reached down to grab it before it hit the floor, and he decided she was going to grab him and BIT down hard. She said they had a discussion later and came to a meeting of the minds (LOL) He was much better afterward. She is also an animal lover and has no animosity toward him.

He does have a temper and will need a few more attitude adjustment sessions to lessen the chance of further obnoxiousness. A.C. is now on the "do not pet" list for visitors.

When I was a child, neighbor kids taunted our terrier while we were away by teasing him from outside the back door. One day he got out of the front door and took after a small baby being carried by its mother. I rounded him up, told my mom, and he was gone that afternoon. There was no choice. He hated all small kids. Sadly, it was not his fault, but the little brats and the parents who did not bother to keep an eye on them.

Reference the barn rat - he is no more. Some rats are yucky, icky, long snouts, snarly teeth, etc. Some are not so bad. He was not so bad. But he was a rat. We lived in Chicago when Martin Luther King Jr. was killed. We had to leave that next morning and drove on empty streets (curfew). In the center of the intersection was a Norway sewer rat, bigger than some cats. I pulled my feet up on the seat and didn't put them back on the floor until we were out of Chicago. The big old sewer rats get into apartments and have attacked babies in their cribs. They are not my favorite animal. I still get chills running up my back when I think of that creature.

    Hello everyone.
We had a tornado hit a few towns over in Revere, very rare! Hit right in near Frank and my first house. It's the first one recorded in 50 years. No fatalities but a lot of destruction.
Market basket saga continues. Arthur T put in a Bid to buy out the other 55 shares and they have been in negotiations but can't come to any agreements. One good note is the food that isn't being delivered has been sent to local food banks and shelters. 25,000 people not working and killing the local distributors as well. I shopped at Shaws last night. Wasn't too bad lots of sales very crowded and a lot of lost people with lists lol.
But I got some gluten free breadcrumbs so I'm making chicken cutlets for dinner tonight.
    Ewwww on the Rat!

Wow on Rick losing 17 lbs. Marie! Good for him. Wish I had that will power.
Refresh my memory again Karen....what breed of dog is A.C.? I have to tell you I am most intrigued about your story of living in Chicago when Martin Luther King was killed. I'm guessing the curfew was on there for fear of rioting? LOL @ you pulling your feet up inside the car. That's a good story. Icky rats aside. :)
Goodness on the Tornado Laurie. I've never experienced one myself and hope not to either. I read your FB post about your shop at Shaw's and you sounded quite pleased. I was wondering if Market Basket might lose some customers over this if people go elsewhere to shop and discover some good places that hadn't been to before. Chicken cutlets sound yummy.
I decided to cook up some home fries alongside the fish instead of the Corn salad as it was getting to be too many vegetables on my plate. LOL. :)
Jim is on his way home. I'm pooped. Productive day.

I think market basket will lose a lot of customers to Shaws. Shaws has a bad reputation for being very overpriced. About a year ago they did away with the rewards card system and gave away a case of coke if you came in and turned yours in, They started having amazing sales but New Englanders stick with what they know and they really haven't had the turn around they expected but now that people are forced to go there and see for themselves that they lowered the prices, have beautiful produce and cashiers at all the registers. I think some people won't go back to the Basket.

Janet - AC. is a cat. A very naughty cat. We got him when he was 4 months old and running in the streets. He is temperamental, then can be very loving and curl up on Wayne or my lap. His early childhood left manners training severely lacking. Part of his obnoxious behavior comes from having to face scroungy old stray tomcats and fight for food. A fireman felt bad for him and would bring him inside to feed him. He has improved but his behavior leaves something to be desired. He is about three years old now.

We lived in Hyde Park - I worked at the University of Chicago one year, and as a social welfare worker the second. the white population left, then some returned when they discovered several houses there were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. So it was a mixed neighborhood back in the late 60's to early 70's. Yes, the curfew was because of riots. The day that MLK Jr. was killed, we were coming home from shopping. The streets were almost empty, but groups of people stood around. Then we heard it on the radio.

We were also there during the riots at the Democratic National Convention (1968 ?) but they were more around Cabrini green Housing and other areas, not so much where we were in Hyde Park. It centered around anti-Vietnam, anti-government feelings rather than so much a racial issue. It really did not affect us like the MLK Jr. killing did.

I grew up in Dayton, Ohio. In the early 60s, my GF and I went downtown to shop around etc. and there were almost no people on the streets, just a few groups here and there. Some businesses were closed. It dawned on our feeble teenage minds that we best leave, although we had no idea what was going on. We had come in after one incident, and shortly after we left another broke out. I don't recall what precipitated the riots then, but never forgot the street scene. It was the same in Chicago, only Dayton did not include the rat!

Laurie - I have seen tornadoes from a distance but fortunately never had one hit nearby. Three times we have headed for the basement here, but each time it either veered South or North and missed us. Such fun - 2 people, 2 dogs, 3 cats in an itty bitty space on the stairs.

I had to nap after my doctor's appointment. They are once again tinkering with my medications. Did an EKG, need a chest xray, blood work. Thursday is the endocrinologist.

Made pressed Cubans for supper, salty balls Maui style along with tomato/cucumber, black olive and feta salad.

Thank you for the good wishes, I appreciate your good thoughts.

Laurie, I'm all for convenience most of the time when shopping but Aldi's will get my business for the basics, milk/eggs/butter/bread. Beats our local Publix in prices by a huge margin. I do hope they can come to an agreement soon to get everyone working again. Yikes on the tornado. Scary weather, indeed. Nice that you found GF Bread crumbs. Score!

Marie, take care with all the busy busy work stuff. Congrats to Rick for loving 17 lbs. That is awesome. I"ve got to let Livia know how he did it. She wants to drop 20. I love the turkey something. I'm still going to get more ground turkey in our life. Fred's consumption of red meat is not good with his other bad habits.

Joce, I love your soup. LOL on keeping the vampires away. Since I'm the nightowl, it would still be a welcome soup here. Hope you are feeling well. Hope the schnitzel hit the spot.

Janet, sorry you ran out of steam, I do that walking across the house these days. I have no energy and lethargy is the bane of my existence. LOL on too many veggies on your plate. Nice to hear that you spoke to Benj. The trip to the Philippines sounds fascinating. He will be fine.

Karen, you have a fascinating back story. We had some riots in St Petersburg back when Olivia was in second grade. She went to a magnet school in one of the riskiest neighborhoods at this time. When the riots started they burnt down homes and businesses next to her school. It was a horrible part of our city history.

I "heart' your story about your childhood terrier. I had a rescue JRT named Oliver and he was so abused as a pup. He hated men, children and anything with wheels. He mended my broken heart with his sparkling onyx eyes staring deep into mine after Tyler passed. He would only cuddle with me and no one else. Unfortunately, he had a terrible habit of escaping our fenced yard and he was killed. I cried for hours and hours. I think that terriers are not meant to be in families with children. Too high strung.

So A.C. has to go back to charm school, eh? Biting the hand that feeds you is not a good plan. Silly cat. Glad your daughter is okay. Now for the rat saga....let's just say we have had our fair share of fruit rats that entered through the torn soffit screen and then shimmied down the walls to go for the dog food. We had these unwelcome critters under the dishwasher, in the laundry room and under the bathtub. It was an exercise in patience to rid our home of these intruders. Sealed all the holes with steel wool, rags with mint extract and expanding foam. Rats don't like the scent of mint. Now, I've only had a run in with a few raccoons when we have overstayed our picnic/beach time at Ft. DeSoto park. At dusk in the park, it looks like the invasion of the GARBAGE snatchers. They will start advancing on the steel cans with intent. You can see the eyes glowing and the bodies rustling in the palmettos.

Now the challenge will be if I can sleep after my long nap.

Lime coconut ice cream......ohhhhhhh, baby, you are calling my name.
    Have a good night, ODD
    Sleep sweet ala Kimmer
