Wacky wet Wednesday

    It's still raining here.
Becca was too pumped from her soccer game last night. She just picked up the report and said wow I did better than last year. I don't think she really read the thing. She plays JV soccer as a freshman so need less to say she doesn't get a whole lot of playing time. But she started yesterday and played the whole game. The team they were playing wasn't very good so to help them out her coach had her defenders (Becca) play offence and vice versa. And Becca scored a goal and had two assists. She was so excited to tell frank she nearly pounced on him when he came home from work. As a defense player she never scores she just guards so this was her first goal on a high school team and her first goal in years!
The pumpkin cake before Rachel added its face. Becca and her friend Macy at the arthritis walk. And last years dance

Good Morning Laurie! LOVE the pumpkin cake! And the pics of the girls! So awesome for Rachel to score a goal and two assists. Good for her! Also glad to hear she didn't freak over the test results. :)
And Hurray on all the hay being baled Karen but sorry to hear Wayne hurt his back some more. :( Hope your 19 1/2 yr. old cat is doing okay today. Always so hard.
Hugs to you and Liv Tina. Glad you were pleased with your brisket.
I haven't decided on dinner yet. Overcast and a little cooler again today. Think maybe comfort food is in order. Thinking of Joce's
    Old Fashion Stuffed Pork Tenderloin
I think I actually have all the ingredients. :)
Heard from Benjamin this morning and he booked his time off in Feb. :) Now I can proceed with booking his flight home. Terribly exciting. Jim's walking on air.
Am going to make some cookies today too. I think they're called Ginger sparkles but they're basically a soft molasses cookie. Again they'll be for Jim's business dinner next week. Had two RSVP's so far and indeed we're getting a vegetarian. :)
PVR'd "The Layover" with Tony Bourdain and watched a bit while eating breakfast. He's in Miami. He's such a hoot.
    Wishing everyone a great day!

Way to go Becca! Awesome she scored a goal and two assists! Hopefully she doesn't dwell on her test results too much. Maybe as you say, she was so tired it didn't sink in and that would be a very good thing for her. Love the pumpkin cake! The icing colour looks perfect! Love the pics of the girls as well! They certainly are growing up fast!

Janet, I had the giggle at myself for the diseased instead of deceased for Pat:) I know I probably just did spelling error and quickly corrected it with Google. Noreen is Gelfling545 http://www.grouprecipes.com/people/gelfling545 She would pop in from time to time. Lucky you going away this weekend for a nice Fall Retreat Getaway. Very nice of you and Jim to host a dinner for the people he works with. It should be great fun especially at this time of the year.
Laura and I have been growing parsley for years. I think Laura was the one who mentioned it to you and all the health benefits with it? With all the rain we have had this year, all my herbs have grown like crazy! My rosemary looks like a tree, as well as the different coloured basil are almost like bushes. I must start cutting a bunch of things and bring them in. I should also bring in some lavender sprigs to dry out as it smells so good.
    Those cookies sound YUMMY!

Marie, Did you watch "Paradise" on Sunday night?

Karen, Poor Wayne! I hope his back is feeling a bit better today. How is your older cat doing today? Great to hear the hay is all baled though:) When you mentioned the Creamed hard boiled eggs it reminded me of what we used to have when I was a kid.
Called creamed hard boiled eggs on toast with asparagus. http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/creamy-asparagus-on-toast
I haven't had that in years and years!

Tina, You are so correct when you said. “ODD Is a meeting of kindred spirits”:) What are you cooking today?

I did get most of my errands done yesterday. The others can be done at my leisure fortunately. We are having pork tenderloin, either Old Fashion Stuffed Pork Tenderloin
    or
    Wiener Schnitzel My Way
with scalloped potatoes and corn on the cob and of course with applesauce on the side.

    Wishing everyone a great day!

    Hello all.

Laurie, the pictures are so cool. Such happy looking girls! Glad the test results didn't freak her out. Love the pumpkin cake. Chocolate, of course -- Right?

So glad Benjamin is coming home in February, Janet. I don't know quite how to proceed with vegetarian meals, but I guess I would soon learn. We are such a meat and potatoes family that vegetarian cooking would be quite a change. I know there are various types of vegetarian cooking, some do not even allow eggs in a cake! But I'm sure you will be fine and come up with some great veggie-acceptable dishes.

My elderly kitty had a setback. We hope he is just having constipation issues but I am beginning to think it may be more. Will feed them canned food or tuna and put some oil in it. When we bring his sister down, his buddy promised to watch out for him and do whatever is needed, but it still bothers leaving him alone for a couple of days. Of course, we hope Wayne's back is better so our plans are not cancelled completely. Ha ha.

This morning we were peacefully sipping our coffee when his buddy informed me two birds were in the sun room, lounging on the sofa. A.C. flew out when I opened the door and the two of us chased one bloodthirsty cat and two terrified birds. I caught A..C. and tossed his rotten little body back into the living room ASAP. He has been rotten ever since. The poor little brown birds (size of wrens) were totally exhausted from flying into windows and escaping an overweight, maniacal, bird-hungry feline. Wish I could have gotten a picture. He managed to capture them. One was so tired he had to lightly push it outside, and it flew away. The second one just fell to the ground, so he gently cupped it in his hands and carried it to the top of a wooden swing set which currently has a carpet piece thrown over it to dry. (It lays over our Ozarkian dog crate to cut the wind in severe weather.) About a half hour or so later, the little thing managed to fly away. I did have to clean a couple of droppings off the sofa, but that was the only mess.

It turns out the door had not been latched yesterday and the wind blew it open this morning. The evening routine will now include checking that door! Birds were bad enough, but possums - raccoons - even skunks would have been a different story altogether. Although I have threatened to have one of the raccoons shot and stuffed and put in the sun room if it attacks any of our critters. Probably peering around the corner at people as they walk in. Speaking of the nasty little critters, no raccoons have been around for several nights. Probably the acorns are falling enough so they have alternate food sources other than my cat food. The tree by the front porch is dumping a zillion tons of acorns every day! It sounds like a bunch of marbles hitting the ground.

We are in the gazebo typing / downloading / sermon-writing / etc. I think the winds have really picked up. Good saliboat weather. For those of you who like to sail. I am a dyed in the wool landlubber. LOL. The baler is in the middle of the open field, so we have to (ha ha - I have to) refasten the tarp and maybe try something else to protect it from incoming weather. Tomorrow they are calling for possible severe storms.

His sister is looking forward to coming down. We will try to find things with less walking than Silver Dollar City, although she might enjoy going there also. I believe their harvest festival will be on, so maybe an abbreviated day would be best considering her and my arthritis and his back. Maybe going to Hermann, MO would also be fun.

Need to go commissary shopping but the first day of the month is military payday and there is absolutely no desire to wait in long lines and contend with screaming kids and too doggone many people. I will probably go on Friday.

Homer is walking way down in the field. He hasn't gone that far in a long time. He wandered down and then meandered his way back up. It is so peaceful and nice out here. But I guess all good things must come to an end, so goodbye for now.

I do kind of recognize Noreen's Avatar but that's about it Joce. :) So thanks to you and Laura as well then for encouraging me to grow parsley. :) We PVR'd Paradise but haven't watched it yet. Maybe tonight. I did decide to go with your
    Old Fashion Stuffed Pork Tenderloin
for dinner. Tenderloin is thawing. Jim will be happy. Either the Stuffed tenderloin or the Schnitzel sounds super yummy.
Cookies are made. Kitchen smells wonderful. I've also been eyeing up a Pumpkin fudge. A lot of the recipes for pumpkin fudge call for white chocolate chips and Marshmallow Creme which I find a bit different. :) I'd like to cut them in little shapes, pumpkins, leaves?
I really hope Wayne's back does get better asap Karen. I'll cross my fingers for your cat. I know it'll be hard leaving him for a bit. That was quite the excitement with the birds in the sunroom! Eeesh on the door blowing open. :( Hope your storms don't get too severe. My first choice would be the Harvest Festival. :) Love stuff like that.

Morning!! Good for Becca and her great soccer game yesterday! Glad she didn't flip out over the test results. Cool pics, love the pumpkin cake! Did you shape it yourself?

Hi Janet! That pork tenderloin looks amazing! Yay on Benjamin getting to visit in February! Hooray! Lol at getting the Vegetarian :) At our family dinners we have 2 Vegetarians, 1 no dairy eater, me doing Paleo and 1 VERY picky eater (my Stepdad lol) and 2 diabetics. It get's interesting. Mmmmmm on the pumpkin fudge. I have 1 last baggie in the freezer with frozen pumpkin puree from last Autumn. Think it's still good? Glad the cookies turned out yummy :)

Joce, my rosemary is insane too! I planted it right after we moved in 7 yrs ago. That thing wouldn't die, even if I wanted it too lol! It's been dug up and moved around a ton of times. Now it's been in the same spot a couple years and that's where its staying, it's too huge to move again. I love pork chops and applesauce! I haven't had it in years though....I need to put that on my list next week.

Good luck to your elderly kitty and hopefully it's nothing serious Karen. OMG on the bird drama this morning lol! That bird must have REALLY been trying to get away if it just fell to the ground! It is crazy how many critters you have sneaking around. I have only seen a possum crawling across our back fence once and that's it. I think we will see more activity when we move to our land.

Lazy day today. Michael worked all night so he's sleeping and Caiden and I are just hanging out watching cartoons :) I have soaked blanched almonds that I need to make into almond milk (have to wait until Michael wakes up!) and then I plan on making these

    http://www.oatmealwithafork.com/2013/09/30/healthy-fun-size-snickers-bars-vegan-grain-free/

and replacing anything peanut with almond :) My family has been requesting me make a dessert for too long now, so it's time! We have gym classes tonight so dinner will need to be done early! I actually whipped up this marinade yesterday and got some chicken in it. I plan on cooking it in my cast iron pan tonight and then chop it up and throw it on a salad. Easy enough! Hope everyone's day is going great!

Hi Michelle:) whatcha up to today:)

Hi Tina...how are you doing today?

I don't have any idea what to make for dinner..as usual:) I do have the ingredients for Joce's Flash Bubble And Squeak..I have never made bubble & squeak (love the name) maybe this weekend when I have more time:)

Wayne decided he needs to see a chiropractor, either on a referral or on his own. We have one nearby who is more homeopathic oriented so I am hoping he can see him. Has to do something and surgery is not too great an option, it could work or leave him paralyzed from wherever the nerve is pinched.

Chicken salad is made for lunch but sort of too much liquid. I think I didn't get the can drained well enough. It will have to do! I removed some liquid and am hoping it absorbs more before serving.

Yes, the bird fiasco was a trip. I'm sure the poor babies are happy to be outdoors and safe from A.C. the Bad Kitty. Other than mice, we have not had critter invasions of the four legged type. One of our church members found a possum in his bathroom on top of the stool tank, after he stumbled in and patted the "kitty" he thought, in the dark, was in with him. He said it didn't feel quite right for a cat, and was lucky it didn't bite. When he was away on a trip, his wife found a young possum under the bookcase - hissing at her. She did manage to remove it without losing a finger. They can bite and their bites are horrid - all those five zillion rows of sharp teeth can do big time damage. I would just up and move if one came to live with me. It came in the dog door.

Time to set lunch up - all are inside and hungry.

Good Afternoon, my dear friends. Super slow start to my day. I've been cuddling with the dogs.

What an adventure you had this morning, Karen. Wrens in the house being chased by bad kitty. Phew. You painted a vivid picture. Glad the birds made it. I can see A.C. swishing his tail now. Oh, I know you are concerned about the elderly cats, they have lived a good long life. A stuffed raccoon peaking around the corner would be quite the sight. I'm glad you have the gazebo to rest, write and view your world. How peaceful.

Yeah for Becca! I'm so glad she wasn't upset. I can see her nearly tackling her dad to tell him the news. Two assists and a goal is terrific. I love the pumpkin cake, Laurie. When you said you were making the cake, my mind went immediately to a cake cooked in a bowl and made 3-D. Of course, I would over complicate a cake! The girls are adorable.

Hurrah! Janet, I'm sure you are over the moon to get dates for Benjamin's visit home. It will go by faster than you think. So, you do have a vegetarian dinner guest coming, time to dust off your delicious dishes, I'm sure you will fix something fabulous. Your upcoming weekend adventure will be so fun. Color me green with envy. I may not kayak but I can sit and watch with the best of 'em.

Joce, I'm fixing a spicy Italian sausage with spinach, mushrooms and bowtie pasta. Seasoned with lots of garlic, currants and parmesan. Looks like Old Fashion Stuffed Pork Tenderloin is a popular dinner option today. Nice to hear that your herbs are doing well. There is a favorite restaurant that has nearly a hedge of rosemary by the entrance, it always makes me jealous.

Time to swiffer, there are puffs of hair everywhere.

Bad backs are not fun. Best wishes to Rick and Wayne.

Michelle, you do have a handful of various eaters to cater too. Sounds like you solved the dessert dilemma. Pumpkin fudge!

Marie, doggone that one ingredient short gremlin. Flash Bubble And Squeak is a great dish.

Karen, I've had a black racer snake curled around the toilet base and nearly had a heart attack but to have a critter sitting on the tank in the dark. Yeow!

Man Michelle....that'd be crazy trying to cook a meal with all those different food preferences! I don't think I'd use that pumpkin puree after a year but that's me. Rosemary TOO HUGE TO MOVE? Wow. I'm envious. Those Vegan snickers bars look super yummy.
Off the top of my head I can't remember why Moray is in Paris either Marie. :) Maybe it'll come to me when I watch it. :) Jim and I are going to watch that and then Anthony Bourdain's Layover in San Francisco this evening. Love San Fran! :) I've never made Bubble & Squeak either.
Ai yi yi on that lady petting a Possum at night time in her bathroom Karen. I'd FREAK! Tis mouse season here and we've caught four so far. Jim went down to check the traps today. Two haven't been touched and one is missing in action. That can't be good. :(
I think I've decided on making a couple of these
    Swiss Cheese And Mushroom Quiche
as the Vegetarian Main at Jim's party and I'll make a vegetable soup as well....
    This one I think
    Spiced Carrot Soup
The get away this weekend was motivated by the season and Tom Thompson, the well known Canadian artist. Fall is my very favourite time of year and the leaves will be at their peak (or even a little past it) this weekend in Algonquin Park.
    http://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/
And both Jim and I LOVE the works of Tom Thompson. He spent a lot of time in Algonquin Park and he died there too, accidentally it seems, at the age of 40. Jim's been reading a few books recently by a local author about Tom Thompson and there's very good descriptions of places he'd been and canoed, including Tom Thompson Lake and Canoe Lake, both of which we hope to get to.
Your pasta sounds really yummy Tina. I'm perplexed with the currants, but...I trust you. :) A HEDGE OF ROSEMARY? I would LOVE that. Not a huge fan of it in cooking, just use sparingly but I do adore the scent. Good luck with the swiffering.

Actually, Janet I saw the recipe on the "Chew" today. I'm putting my trust in Mario Batali and his taste buds. He actually finished the dish with a drizzle of reduced fresh grape must. He also dolloped fresh ricotta with lemon zest on top of the sausage/veggie/pasta. I don't have the fresh ricotta, so I'm doing his less fancy version. I'm thinking the little currants will add a tiny touch of sweet with all the garlic and sausage. Kind of like adding dried cranberries to my favorite salads with a sharp tangy vinaigrette.

I think the carrot soup and quiche are perfect dishes. Your trip is absolutely up my alley. I love fall myself. Very nice on the exhibition by your favored artist. It should be a great time, indeed.

I'm starving. Wish you could throw me a cookie, you know I love ginger.

Janet - the MIA trap is probably attached to a tail and clattered along the basement floor behind one ticked mouse. We had one set on the counter and the cats moved it and deceased mouse to the living room.

Tina - If a big ole snake curled up in my bathroom I would die of heart failure...not afraid of them but the shock factor is too much. We had a small blue racer dash around the living room and managed to scoot it outside. Then there was a tree frog sitting in a basin with one of the cats, who couldn't figure out that he had to get OUT of the bin so he could grab it. The bat in the bedroom was NOT fun. A friend had an owl come in thru the doggie door and perch on the back of a recliner in their den. It was quite happy there, she was not happy but her husband put on heavy gloves and carried it outside. Lesson learned - NO DOGGIE DOORS in this house.

I would love a hedge of rosemary. So far we have kept one potted plant alive during the summer but it dies out before winter. I will try bringing it into the sun room this winter along with the lavender and maybe the peppermint. The climate here is not super cold, but not all plants can make it thru the winter.

I am completely, thoroughly lazy. No desire to do anything. There is plenty of work to do to get ready for his sister's visit. I should mop the kitchen floor, get the ground venison out for supper or decide on something else, run the DW, do some more laundry.....the list goes on.

We have a tornado watch in effect. I don't know the details but Wayne just turned on the weather radio so we shall see.

Aha, the snake came in through the doggie door. We figured it wanted to cool off on the tile floor because it was so bloody hot outside. Fred got it out with a broom. We replaced the door to the outside soon after.

Janet, Mario used a bottled product from Italy. Vincotto It is made after the first press of grapes. He said you could make your own with fresh organic grape juice by pressing and reducing it down on the stove. He recommended the tiniest drizzle as to not overwhelm the pasta dish.

We are going to cheat on his recipe. I'm not even going to boil water for the pasta. We are going to eat the sausages and greens on some good toasted Italian bread. A bruschetta dinner. Fred said, we have had too much pasta lately. Fine by me.

I'll go back and put that in the recipe. As you know I'm not a veggie fan so I pretty much puree all my soups so I can't tell there's veggies in them. :) I'm sure it'd be fine either way, but....
There's no way we could have a doggie door, even with the fact we don't have a doggy. I'd have A LOT of creatures coming through on a regular basis! Just this morning I had to shoo a Turkey off the front deck! A Bruschetta dinner sounds like a fantastic idea.
That's very cool on the hawk Laurie. I hope it makes it. I wonder what the guy fed it? Little bits of raw meat maybe? Uh oh on the wine. :( Boo.

I had a black bird come in through the oven exhaust vent in my apartment in Cincinnati. It woke me up beating its wings against the window trying to get out. I was in a panic. This is the apartment that I could leave the soda on the counter and it would be colder than the food in the frig and I had to boil water to wash my hair and take a warm bath. After the black bird incident, I called Mom and pleaded to come back home.

    Critters critters everywhere.

Bruschetta was delicious. How can you go wrong with sausage, garlic and spinach on yummy toasted bread?
