Wellington Wednesday

  • notyourmomma 9 years ago
I watched Master Chef last night, catching up on the shows on the DVR The elimination over the Salmon Wellington was interesting. I'm most interested in the filling for the dish. I always use leeks, fennel, dill, mustard and a bit of cream. Curious minds want to know.

I see Angie today. I have to take my cpap card to the doctor. Aldi's has chicken breasts on sale, as well as acorn squash and tri-color peppers.

Making a breakfast of eggs and cheesy grits. Long cook, not instant.

I'll try that supper of pork cutlets tonight. Olivia will be home and she can enjoy my efforts.

And yes, as the pictures show, I like a good Wellington. And Beef Carpaccio!

Morning Tina! Is this an old MasterChef you're watching or am I missing a new season and didn't realize it? Wellington's rock. Have fun at Angie's and tell us all about it after. Don't overdue things running all those errands. I too adore Beef Carpaccio! How did your World Series Game go?
About to head down to the treadmill. Main thing on my 'To-do List" today is clean the house. Jim has invited a friend over for dinner and the Hockey Game tomorrow night. Haven't figured out what to make for dinner this evening yet. I do have the ingredients to make Sliders but I don't know if I'm 'feeling the love'. :)
Another dreary rainy day here in the Ottawa valley.
    Wishing everyone a good day!

Q: What do you use to mend a jack-o-lantern?
    A: A pumpkin patch.

Ha ha on the pumpkin patch!

It is sunny and cool today. The today show has a blurb on a lady who did not shop for new stuff for one year. If I tried that my appliances would all keel over at once. Ho ho.
I am not a shopper by nature - only when I actually need something.

Tina, I LOVE cheese grits! I bought a bag of the real stuff when we were in NC and the weather is getting JUST RIGHT for cheese grits in the morning. As soon as I pick up some cheese - am out - the missing ingredient strikes again.

    The wellington looks so-o-o-o good.

Did you get to watch the world series? I'm not sure where game 7 is going to be held. The local news showed the aftermath as Kansas City celebrated.

Wayne's buddy is out hunting the 8 point buck he got yesterday afternoon. It got too dark to locate so he and a friend are going to search for it this morning, then probably process it or at least get ready. So we may have the day free. His idea of what to do and my idea are probably nowhere close. Ha!

Have a great day. Will check in later.

Are you watching Master Chef Canada Tina? I can't seem to get any of the Canada shows DVR'd on time. I have Top Chef Canada recording right now but it started on Episode 8? I'm hoping I can catch the first one's on On Demand, or if they play a day of reruns. I wish we had an Aldi's. I've heard only great things about them. Is it kind of like a Trader Joes? Be sure to snap a pic. of your nails, wanna see them!

Declaring today my off day from working out. I stayed up late last night talking to my friend Courtney on the phone and I am way more tired than usual. Didn't get the potatoes planted yesterday. Read in my Gardening Bible that you are supposed to cut them into chunks and let them sit out on the counter for 24 hours to get a nice brown icky layer on them. Will be putting them into the ground today at some point. Also making a grocery store run. Pulling out some ham steak to make:
    http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Ham-and-Pineapple-Kabobs/Detail.aspx?event8=1&prop24=SR_Title&e11=ham%20kabobs&e8=Quick%20Search&event10=1&e7=%2fmy%2frecipebox%2fdefault.aspx&soid=sr_results_p1i1
and then we will have to rush off to gym class until 8:45 (UGH). Hope everyone has a great day :)

Whhoopps...missed some people with my slow typing lol! Hi Janet, work out extra hard for me :P What kind of sliders are you thinking about making?
Finger Lickin Good Ham Cheese Sliders
    Sloppy Joe Sliders
    Pork Tenderloin Sliders
    Texas Buffalo Chicken Sliders
    Pepper Popper Sliders
    Aloha Sliders
Okay I have a lot of slider recipes saved lol!

Hi Karen! I could probably go a year without shopping for something. My only problem would be like you, if an appliance broke down or something, and my kids couldn't count either. They grow and NEED new clothes! I wish Michael would hunt. I would love to have a freezer full of venison meat! We do get half a cow and half a pig with my parents processed every year or two. Haven't done venison yet. Enjoy your free day!!

Master Chef Canada airs here after it finishes in Canada. We get the delayed season on the Cooking Channel.

LOL on pumpkin patch. Janet, I'm sure you will figure out something for the dreary weather and appropriate for company. We are making a conscious effort to keep the counters neat. It is easier if you only have two things to put away instead of 50. The World Series game was very thrilling. Kansas City blew away the Giants to tie up the Series. Game 7 is tonight 8:00 pm, in KC.

Karen, cheesy grits are a staple in this house. I like cooking the slow method and getting them creamy. The more pepper the better. I'm sure that KC is going nuts. To tie up the Series like they did makes it crazier than ever. I'm sure processing a buck is a lot of work and not really a 'free' day.

Michelle, Trader Joe's is owned by the same company that owns Aldi's. TJ's is more upscale items. Aldi's is definitely budget limited item friendly. There are certain items that I snatch up all that I can when the price is right. Green olives for La Feria sauce, a necessary ingredient in my house, is .99 cents a jar. Butter was 2.50 a lb. but has skyrocketed to 3.50 a lb. I love ham and pineapple. No one else in the house does, however.

I might have to rethink my plans. I have a blinding headache. Could be lack of sleep, I went to bed at 3:30 and got up at 7. My appointment is 11:30. Maybe a quick nap and a Tylenol will rejuvenate me.

Hugs all. Take care, my dears.

That's an interesting thought Karen....not shopping for anything new for one year. My first thought was 'books?' but then of course there's the Library! Obviously it could be done but it wouldn't be very fun. And the older I get, the more I think 'fun' is the name of the game. :) Enjoy your day.
Now that you mention it Michelle, I think I do remember my Mom cutting the seed potatoes into chunks and each chunk had to have an eye? Am I remembering correctly? You, quote "Declaring today my day off from working out" and then moments later "Have to run off to gym class". So you were going to do a work out at home AND then go to the gym as well? There's no way I could match your enthusiasm. Not happening. :) But all the power to you for sure! I always make Dahlia's sliders
    Sliders White Castle Style
but I am going to go through that list of yours and check those out as well and I also have some cool ones pinned including a salmon slider and a meatball slider.
Good luck at your appointment Tina.
Decided to do a pasta salad on the side of the sliders....
    Pasta Salad
(Any bets as to whether I have the proper noodles in the pantry?)

    Good morning!

Tina, hope all goes well with your CPAP appt...I guess they replace the masks every 6 months or so, I believe Rick said he was told that (craft)..so he should be getting a new mask soon..I might have to call the VA and see for sure..I have been wanting to try a turkey wellington..I believe Jamie Oliver has a recipe (craft once again)!

Janet, we're supposed to get some more rain on Halloween..not a big storm though:) Perfect weather for our pizza & candy and watching TV night:)
The world series game was KC 10 SF 0..blowout! I'm rooting for SF of course:)
    Maybe they will win tonight:)

Karen, I'm the same way, not a shopper..and usually Rick will try to fix whatever "breaks or stops working" first..I never get anything new:( Yes, I', still waiting for my sun room..LOL!

Michelle, busy day for you!!! Cool on planting Winter veggies:)

Well, we have been busy! That's a good thing:)

I don't have any idea what to have for dinner..yesterday I just made some homemade chicken noodle soup and had a grilled cheese to go with...

Joce, hope your feeling better my dear...

Talk soon! Have a most wonderful Wednesday!

Hi Marie! :) I watched Jamie Oliver make his Turkey Wellington on his Christmas Special last year and I was almost licking the TV screen HTG! The only thing I'd do differently is not add the cranberry sauce as it gives me the heebies.

We've eaten all our Halloween candy already! Isn't that the way. Rockets (you guys in the States call them Smarties which is just wrong because Smarties are a whole other thing altogether and I know we've had this discussion in the past) :) LOL... are my fave and we had a very large bag of them. :) Yum on your Chicken Noodle soup and grilled cheese. That sounds awesome.

I have no idea what rockets / smarties are but since it centers around Halloween candy then it is same thing with two different names?? Like the English lorry, U.S. truck - lift vs. elevator, flat vs. apartment ---- two countries separated by a common language - LOL.

Janet and Marie: I haven't bought Halloween anything for ages, esp. candy since we have not had kids knocking on our doors so far off of the beaten path. There are some recipes I might try, then take to church on a potluck Sunday - love the mushroom skulls and want to try them, but don't think that would be the most appropriate occasion - ha ha. Of course, candy corn was addicting at one time.

Michelle: the pineapple / ham dish sounds good. I have neither so it is not a possibility for dinner. Will find something, I'm sure.

The potato chunk / planting sounds right - leave an eye in each and plant. I have no idea what season / time of the year is right for planting potatoes here in MO. I want to try the heritage seeds maybe next year but we have not come to an agreement on where to put a garden. He wants it by the barn and I want it closer so it is easier to tend.

Tina, we have an Aldi's about 25 miles from us. If I am in town, it is a good place to shop. They also market-test stuff to see if it sells in the area. Now if we could get a Whole Foods Market, life would be great!

Wayne is due back from getting the truck tire fixed and the washer is done, so it is back to the laundry! Then figure something quick for lunch. Probably leftovers. Have a good day.

Yum on the Alice Springs Chicken Marie!
Yes Karen. People in the U.S. call "Rockets" (there's a picture of them in my Avatar) "Smarties" but in Canada Smarties is a whole different candy, similar to an M&M but better. :) I was never fond of candy corn nor those horrid taffy candies wrapped in black, orange and white wrappers.
Got my hardwood floors done. Now to wash the rest of them and dust and I'm done. Jim's company is moving offices today (same building different floor) so I think he's going to be able to leave early. Yay!

Cool Jim might be home early Janet! I need to do my floors soon as well..after this next rain will be a good time to clean them:)

I Googled both websites - the rolled up sugar wafer type candies that goes under an alias in Canada (LOL) I am familiar with - the boxed kind I am not. Which doesn't mean much because I don't have youngsters around that clamor for one kind or another. The boxed U.S. candy I would not care for, but would maybe eat one of the "rockets" once in a blue moon. Your stash is safe from me. I don't care for the taffy stuff either. Now, in the event of dark chocolate covered espresso beans, all bets of off. I avoid going to stores where I have found them except for rare occasions. Or I'd gain 100 pounds overnight.

Wayne has taken my car to get the oil changed and serviced. I will probably run the cat to the vet by myself. He is very likely tired of running errands. The washer just signaled it is finished so I must get back to laundry.

    Have a food day.

Tina, I looked it up and there is actually 2 Aldi's within 20-30 mins from me! They are in places that I NEVER go to so I guess that's why I have never seen them lol. I'll have to make a trip to one of the sometime to check it out. From the website the prices do seem great! I hope you got a nap in earlier :)

Hi Marie, lol I read CRAP appt. at first :) MMMmmm...I could go for some some soup and a sandwich right now :)

Caiden's favorite candy is Smarties. His next favorite is Sweet Tarts. Bri won't waste her time eating any candy or dessert that doesn't have chocolate involved. What kind of candy is called Smarties in Canada Janet? We are never here to pass out candy, since we are out doing the Trick or Treating. Our neighborhood is insane on Halloween. People from other neighborhoods drive to ours to trick or treat. There is a guy who drives his truck with a trailer attached with hay to sit on and anyone is welcome to just hop on.

The book didn't say anything about having eyes on the potatoes, but either way, mine have lots of eyes :)

Went down to Fresh Food Market and found some Kombucha!! I had gotten Kombucha from Whole Foods last time I went but haven't been able to find it around here since, so I was happy when I saw it today. It's some super healthy stuff :)

I believe, but I wouldn't swear to it...that the round M&M type Smarties are only available in Canada. Don't know why. Good Luck at the Vets Karen. I hope it goes well.
ROFL @ CRAP appnt. and that there are 2 Aldi's within a half hr. of you but you didn't realize it Michelle. And I'm not laughing at you. It just sounds really amusing to me because where I live I pretty much know what's within a half hr. radius as there's not a whole lot. You must be in a busy area! :) I like Sweet tarts too but haven't had any in ages. Jim and I used to divvy up and one of us would go trick or treating with Benjamin and one would stay home to hand out treats. Of course we only had the one child. :) It sounds like Halloween is a lot of fun in your neighbourhood. So I had to google Kombucha but I don't know that I have the right thing? This is what Wikipedia has to say about it:
Kombucha: is a lightly effervescent fermented drink of sweetened black and/or green tea that is used as a functional food. It is produced by fermenting the tea using a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast, or "SCOBY". Although kombucha is claimed to have several beneficial effects on health, these claims are not supported by scientific evidence. Drinking kombucha has been linked, in rare cases, to serious side effects and deaths, and improper preparation can lead to contamination.

    Hey all
We don't have the chocolate smarties here just the sweet tart kind. I think they may go by a different name though like Stix or something and come in a straw like wrapper.
Tonight's dinner is something with hamburger not sure what.
They opened a Wegman's grocery store next town over but I hear it's a mad house there!

The town we live in is small and not very busy, but go down the freeway a mile or so and you start hitting the VERY busy cities. That's where I go to do just about everything. They managed to just put those Aldi's in the nooks and crannies I never go by lol! Yes you have Kombucha correct. The whole process of making Kombucha is pretty gross, but supposedly it's a super duper food :P Yikes on the deaths from contamination though, I think I'll just stick to buying it organic in the store instead of trying to make my own!

That's two new items today for me. I never heard of Konbucha either, much less the possible side effects. However, the blowfish (?) craze in Japan etc. is another one that warns about death if it is not prepared correctly. The chefs have to be specially licensed. I'll stick to safer, saner foods. I have no desire to try anything that could be lethal. Whole Food Market would be relatively safe due to their organic and non-chemical items. Really would like one nearby - St. Louis is too far to hassle with unless we would go their for some other reason and could do two things at once.

I have to get Mary from her safe haven and put her in the carrier. Poor baby. She is so miserable and her face is raw with eye drainage. I'm wondering if it is something other than plain allergies. I have to sneak it into the back room or lock A.C. and Mel up before I bring her out. She would panic if A.C. came too close.

No time like the present to grab the kitty.

Wow, lots of chatter! I saw a Halloween costume where a fellow taped a bunch of 'Smarties' to his trousers. He went as Smarty Pants.

    Short nap. Bad dream.

I have a bag of Hershey Miniatures just in case we get a trick or treater. Fred will devour them. Study showed that if a sixty year old ate the equivalent of 25 chocolate bars a day it would improve their short term memory. Hmm.

Aldi's does not have bags, Michelle. Take your own and you need a quarter to 'rent' a grocery cart. Or you can buy reusable bags at store.

LOL @ Smarty pants Tina. That's a good one.
Jim's home. Hamburg's prepped and I'm just cooking the shell pasta. Which I did have by the way. :) Did not have the onion flakes for the Sliders though. Grrrr. Subbed with some dehydrated garlic flakes and onion powder.

Karen, hoping your vet can help Mary. And that A.C. stays in the house. I wouldn't want to eat any Blowfish or any food that could possibly be fatal. Just saying.

Laurie, fascinating about our grocery stores and the cult following some of the have. Hey, Fred and I took the kids to an opening of a new Publix just for the free samples. What is so special about Wegman's?

I like Skittles or any Sour patch candy. The more sour the better. Olivia and I can decimate a box of sour skittles at a movie.

Marie, my appointment was yesterday. I like my sleep Dr. Z. Today I just had to drop of the card from the machine so the Dr. can read the results that it stores.

Enjoy your sliders, Janet. Glad Jim is home early. I think your subs are good.
