County Fair Time-What's Your Fav Food?

  • MotherAnn 8 years ago
County fairs have been going on here in Ohio and my county fair (Portage) is starting up today. I haven't missed many fairs over the years. Do you go to your county fair and what is your favorite fair food? I'd have to say my favorites have not really changed all that much over the years. I can forego cotton candy; unless there's a child with me then I have to have at least one mouthful of that sugary sweetness. I want an elephant ear, funnel cake, a sausage sandwich, calzone, maybe a gyro, and of course a cup full of those greasy, wonderful fair fries! I can't eat that much in one day at the fair, so if I'm not going more than once I'm always in a dilemma as to what to choose. Usually I hope hubby will share a bite or two of his with me. I'm off to work, but will stop in later to see if anyone has commented.

I'd share mine with you, Sassy! Saturday afternoon/evening I'll have one - come on down. We could even have one of those great lemonades - I forgot about those!

I Love the county fair !! Ours has been happening for over 120 yrs. It is in the 3rd wk. of Sept. at the county seat. (Centreville ) . 4-H is huge in this area , and the kids do such a wonderful job with their animals , and other projects . There are many barns full of the livestock , horses , poultry . There are also other barns full of quilts , canned goods etc. , all decorated with the ribbons that have been won . Must eat Fraziees Fries with malt vinegar , and of course salt. So good. There is a wonderful candy apple stand and the owner makes them with granny smith , so big ,so crisp , and with just the right amount of red buttery coating. Cannot miss the Methodist church spot., with all home made food , and the best pie and coffee going. Some years a gang of us will take a day off work , make some snacks , go early to get a spot by the fence for some harness racing. We will take several rolls of quarters , and a deck of cards , and draw for the ponies. What a hoot!! The pig races are also a must do . The piggies get in the starting gate , and race like crazy over hurdles, and through tunnels all for a mini oreo cookie !!! So much fun. I Can't wait . I will eat several elephant ears for the both of you , and drink some of that awesome lemonade as well !!

As an ex-buckeye (we live in Missouri now) I recall the Preble County fairs of (too many) years ago, with 4-H livestock my main interest. Esp. the horses! Even tho I grew up in Dayton - LOL! Last year I finally got to see Eaton's "Pork Festival" with its pig races, when we were in the area.

Oh Lumpygravy - you brought back so many memories! I remember going to the fair with my grandparents and they insisted we eat at the Methodist Church spot. As a kid I hated that! No chance of seeing my friends and who wants home-cooked meals with all that wonderful junk food out there??!!

MissouriFarmWife - Our fair features many awesome 4-H projects, many of which are animals. I love to go thru those barns and see everything. When my daughter was in middle school she joined a 4-H group and was going to take her ducks to the fair. When it came time to enter them, she refused, saying she didn't want her ducks at the fair with everyone poking at them and making noises at them. That was the end of her 4-H ventures.

Ohiocook, definitely get to the fair next year! There's just something about it. We go to ours (Portage) almost every year as well as some years we hit the Canfield Fair (Is that Mahoning or Trumbull, I'm not sure?) and Geauga Co. Fairs. I've been to Summit but it's a bit too much "citified" for me, I prefer the country county fairs with all the animals, tractors, etc.
