Really, it came from Vincent Price's cookbook and he said the condiments were carried to the table in golden bowls by a "boy" one by one and each guest helped themselves to the condiment of choice. Imagine a sumptious setting where there are lovely silks and everyone dressed up being served fabulous food with a parade of waiters. Of course, this was the early 60's and that would be truly decadent. My mom did all the condiments in little bowls surrounding her big platter of jasmine rice and the chafing dish of curried chicken.
