About me
I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, along the coast of Lake Superior. It's a fiercely beautiful land--half wild and incredible. Trips to the grocery are actual trips and I have to plan carefully---there's no running out for a gallon of milk at 8pm. Really don't consider myself an expert here---I have years of experience cooking from scratch though---no jars or boxes in my pantry. I lovelovelove to bake! Oh, and love soup--we eat gallons of the stuff 'round here. Let's peek in that pantry now: at least one bag of every kind of dried bean I can get my hands on, olives, sardines (yuck, where did THOSE come from!), five kinds of flour, four kinds of sugar, home-canned: tomatoes, salsa, pepper relish, venison, tomato juice, whitefish, blueberries and a wild yeast starter I call Stewie (pun intended). There's several kinds of oats, maple syrup, a can of emergency creamed corn and twenty pounds of Hot Rize flour for biscuits. Over in the corner is a shelf full of jelly, jam and butters---I love the fruits! One of my passions is smoking and grilling and I make Canadian bacon, smoked pork, beef and poultry and summer sausage. I also enjoy making my own dry rubs and BBQ sauces. I love to read, fish, hike, camp and bike (anything outdoors is good!).Oh, I run and cook for a camp here in the UP too. There's enough about me----enough to give you an idea anyway!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi there, Cookingsherry! Glad to have you as a friend on GR. I like the range of ingredients in your pantry, and the fact that you cook from scratch. I would like to see some of your smoke recipes, and learn a little about how to do it. I was a chef for about 30 years, and although I always cook from scratch, I never learned how to smoke food.

I also love to bake, and I have learned to make Chinese food pretty well. I'm currently teaching myself Japanese cooking, with emphasis on sushi. When I get good enough, I'll publish some recipes. I know the theory of preserving pretty well, but have not done much of it, with the exception of jams and jellies.

I look forward to seeing some of your soups on the site. I love soup in the winter, and slow-cooked stews. Italian cooking is also a favorite.

Welcome aboard, and have fun.
