When I first moved to the area I sought out all the places a single guy would enjoy. It didn’t take long to find the Buena Tavern. There is a full bar when one walks in. Decent beer on draught and steak sandwiches made for a pleasant place for me to enjoy a meal. On occasion, I would meet with friends after work.
Now more than a decade later, I still have trouble overcoming that image of the establishment. But as I have learned from my wife, the Buena Tavern is a nice Italian restaurant that offers a fine meal at a reasonable price.
The atmosphere is not stellar. There is a banner (that has not changed in years) advertising the $ 35/head catering special for the banquet room. The bar still greets one as he enters. The back room is still adorned with clowns . . . some freakishly scary.
It’s a family run business and the young son does a lot of the greeting. He’s a pleasant chap.
Italian standards are the normal fare at the Buena Tavern. The veal marsala is prepared well and is frequently found in front of me. The pasta here is good. We have never had a bad meal and the Tavern is in the normal rotation of restaurants for our family.
This last time out we tried new dishes for us here. Gert had the fried seafood combo. This was a very large portion. The batter was light and the oil used did not taint the meal as it can do. The scallops were perfectly done. Large butterfly shrimp, a stuffed clam, flounder, and other treats made this enjoyed by all. I had the Fettucini Cardinale. Shrimp, onions, and mushrooms joined the fettucini. It was topped with what was called a light cream sauce. There was nothing light about it, but thoroughly enjoyed. The sauce was topped with pieces of lobster. The portion was so large that we took home half of it. Beetle had a child’s portion of gnocchi. These were very tasty.
We began with mozzarella sticks. Gert, the connoisseur of this fried specialty enjoyed them. I thought they were average and did not appear to be homemade. We often have dessert, but passed this evening.
