A couple of years back I spent a relaxing week in the Smokey Mountains in North Carolina. While I was there I traveled to each of the small towns that dotted along the mountains and Waynesville was one of my favorites - especially when I found this little BBQ gem.
I was dying for some down-home - home cooked food. I had grown tired of those gourmet transplant chefs trying to reinvent old-time-perfect-as-is southern food (Why? Why? Why? Why try and fix something that isn't broken?).
Big Mountain BBQ is a small place with big food and fast, friendly, and very personable service. Even though the service was fast I wasn't rushed, I took my time. I took my time soaking in the charm and savoring each aroma and taste of mouth-watering-bring-it-on-home food. I tell you what, I left there full, happy, and feeling like a local who had been eating at Big Mountain BBQ for years.
While I was there I ordered the Smoked Pulled Pork Platter ($6.49). It came with a heaping mound of BBQ pulled pork, Texas toast, coleslaw and 2 sides; I ordered the fried green tomatoes and macaroni and cheese and of course a bottomless glass of their sweet tea to wash it all down.
I was most impressed with their Fried Green Tomatoes. Now, I have eaten my fair share of fried green tomatoes and I have to say that Big Mountain BBQ has the BEST I have ever eaten. They were perfect - the right amount of seasoning, perfectly fried with the right amount of crunch in each bite and the tomatoes were crisp and tangy. It brings a tear to my eye and a rumble to my tummy just thinking about those glorious fried green tomatoes.
I had to give Big Mountain BBQ a BUTTON and a ZIP (that was from my jeans - because I could no longer keep them fastened).
If you are ever in the North Carolina Smokey Mountain area make sure you take that drive to Waynesville and stop off at Big Mountain BBQ - and ABSOLUTELY order a plate of their Fried Green Tomatoes.
