Ingredients
  • 1/2 c shortening
  • 1/2 c white sugar
  • 1/2 c milk
  • 1/2 c unsweetened cocoa powder
  •  
  • 1 c milk
  • 2 c all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 c butter
  • 2 1/2 tbsps all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 c white sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsps baking soda

Directions
  • Step #1 Cream together butter & 1 c sugar, add egg.
  • Step #2 Sift together 2 c flour, soda, cocoa, 1/2 tsp salt & baking powder.
  • Step #3 Add vanilla & milk.
  • Step #4 Drop by tbsp full onto ungreased cookie sheet & bake 7-8 mins at 425F degrees F (220 degrees C).
  • Step #5 Cool completely & make sandwiches using following filling.
  • Step #6 To Make Filling: Combine 2 1/2 tbsps flour & 1/2 c milk & cook this until it turns to thick paste.
  • Step #7 Cool completely.
  • Step #8 Cream together the 1/2 c sugar, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/2 c shortening, & 1/2 tsp vanilla.
  • Step #9 Add cooled paste & beat until fluffy.
  • Step #10 (This will take awhile & if your paste is not completely cooled it will look curdled.
  • Step #11 ) I usually double this recipe for the filling.
