Chocolate Layer Cake Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 3/4 c milk
  • 1/2 c butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 c baking cocoa
  • 2 1/2 c confectioners' sugar
  • 1 c sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 c all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsps hot water
  • FROSTING:
  • 1/4 c shortening
  • 1/4 c baking cocoa

Directions
  • Step #1 In a mixing bowl, beat shortening & sugar.
  • Step #2 beat in egg & vanilla.
  • Step #3 Combine the flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda & salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk.
  • Step #4 Pour into a greased & floured 9-in.
  • Step #5 round baking pan.
  • Step #6 Bake at 350 degrees F for 30-35 mins or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
  • Step #7 Cool in pan for 10 mins before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Step #8 For frosting, in a small mixing bowl, cream butter.
  • Step #9 Gradually beat in the confectioners' sugar, cocoa, vanilla & enough water to achieve spreading consistency.
  • Step #10 To assemble, cut cake in half.
  • Step #11 Place one half on a serving plate.
  • Step #12 Spread with 1/2 c frosting.
  • Step #13 Top with remaining cake.
  • Step #14 Spread remaining frosting over top & rounded edge of cake.
