Ingredients
  • Frosting .
  • 1/2 c shortening .
  • Cake .
  • 2 (2 oz) bottles red food coloring .
  • 1 tsp vanilla .
  • 1 tsp vanilla .
  • 3/4 tsp salt .
  • 1/2 c margarine .
  • 1/2 c shortening .
  • 1 1/2 c sugar .
  • 3 tbsps flour .
  • 1 tbsp vinegar .
  • 1 c buttermilk .
  • 1 tsp baking soda .
  • 1 c milk .
  • 2 1/4 c flour .
  • powdered sugar .
  • 2 eggs .
  • 2 tbsps cocoa

Directions
  • Step #1 For the cake, first sift together the dry ingredients in a medium bowl.
  • Step #2 In large bowl, eggs, cream together shortening, sugar, & vanilla.
  • Step #3 Dissolve baking soda & vinegar in buttermilk.
  • Step #4 In three additions each, add the buttermilk mixture & the dry mixture to the shortening mixture, alternating.
  • Step #5 Stir in red food coloring.
  • Step #6 Pour into a greased & floured 9x13 pan or two layer cake pans.
  • Step #7 Bake at 350 for 25 mins.
  • Step #8 Cool completely.
  • Step #9 For the frosting, cook the milk & flour in a small saucepan over med-heat/flame.
  • Step #10 Cook until thicker than gravy.
  • Step #11 Cool.
  • Step #12 Beat together margarine, shortening, & vanilla.
  • Step #13 Mix in the flour mixture.
  • Step #14 Beat in enough powdered sugar to make a good spreading consistency & desired sweetness.
