Ingredients
  • 1 c white sugar
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 c boiling water
  • 1 c sliced walnuts
  • 1 c white sugar
  • 2 1/2 c all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 c dates, pitted & sliced
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 c sliced walnuts
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 4 tbsps all-purpose flour
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 c buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions
  • Step #1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 C).
  • Step #2 Grease & flour two 8 inch round cake pans.
  • Step #3 Set aside.
  • Step #4 Put dates in a bowl with soda & pour boiling water on top.
  • Step #5 Set a side.
  • Step #6 In a large mixing bowl, mix together 1 c sugar, 2 1/2 c flour & 1 c sliced walnuts.
  • Step #7 Add egg, 1 tsp vanilla, pinch of salt & tbsp butter.
  • Step #8 Mix to mix.
  • Step #9 Finally, stir in the sliced dates with liquid.
  • Step #10 Mix well.
  • Step #11 Pour batter into prepared pans.
  • Step #12 Bake for 25 to 30 mins.
  • Step #13 Cake will pull away from sides of pans & be golden brown.
  • Step #14 In a medium saucepan, mix buttermilk, 1 c sugar, pinch of salt & 4 tbsps flour.
  • Step #15 Cook on medium heat until thickened.
  • Step #16 Stir in 1 tsp vanilla & remaining c of walnuts.
  • Step #17 Spread mixture between layers & on top of cake.
  • Step #18 Let filling run down the sides of cake.
