Step #1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Step #2 Grease a 9x9 inch square pan.
Step #3 In a small saucepan, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 c brown sugar, orange zest, cloves, allspice, mix the dates, lemon juice & water.
Step #4 Cook over medium-high heat, until dates are soft & the mixture becomes a thick paste, stirring constantly, about 10 mins.
Step #5 Remove from heat & set aside to cool.
Step #6 To make the crust & topping, baking powder, baking soda, stir this together the oats, 1/2 c brown sugar, flour, 1/2 tsp cinnamon & salt in a medium bowl.
Step #7 Cut in butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers.
Step #8 Mixture should be coarse & crumbly.
Step #9 Stir in 2 tbsps water until evenly distributed.
Step #10 Press about 2/3 of the mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan.
Step #11 Spread the date mixture evenly over the crust all the way to the edges.
Step #12 Sprinkle top the remaining crust mixture over the date layer.
Step #13 Press down lightly.
Step #14 Bake for 20 to 25 mins in the preheated oven, until the top is lightly toasted.
Step #15 Cool completely before cutting into bars.
