Step #1 Beat shortening at medium speed with an electric mixer 2 mins or until creamy.
Step #2 Gradually add 1/2 c sugar, beating 5 to 7 mins.
Step #3 Add egg, beating until yellow disappears.
Step #4 Combine flour & next 3 ingredients.
Step #5 Stir together buttermilk & molasses In a large-ish measuring c.
Step #6 Gradually add flour mixture to shortening mixture alternately with buttermilk mixture, beginning & ending with flour mixture; beat until mixed.
Step #7 Divide dough into 5 equal portions; place each portion in a 9-inch greased & floured cake pan or cast-iron skillet, & firmly press with floured fingers into pan.
Step #8 Prick dough several times with a fork.
Step #9 Sprinkle top each layer evenly with 1/2 tsp sugar.
Step #10 Bake at 400° for 10 mins or until golden brown.
Step #11 (Only bake layers on one rack at a time.
Step #12 ) Repeat procedure as needed to bake in pans.
Step #13 Remove layers from pans; cool completely on wire racks.
Step #14 Spread 1 1/2 c Dried Apple Filling between each layer to within 1/2 inch of edge, beginning & ending with a cake layer.
Step #15 (Save your prettiest cake layer for the top.
Step #16 ) Loosely cover cake, & let this stand 2 days at about room temp.
