Ingredients
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds (zeera) .
  • 2 tbsps oil .
  • 1 tsp salt .
  • 2/3 c whole cream .
  • 1 large onion, sliced .
  • 1 tbsp finely sliced ginger, cut in fine strips .
  • 1 c Urad Dal, available at indian grocery stores (black legume) .
  • 1 tbsp oil

Directions
  • Step #1 Soak daal in 4 c water for 1 hr.
  • Step #2 Drain & rinse daal.
  • Step #3 Bring daal, salt & 4 c water to boil, lower heat & let simmer 45 mins till daal feels soft when pressed between finger tips.
  • Step #4 Strain daal & place back in cooking pot & reserve the liquid.
  • Step #5 In fry pan heat 3 Tbsp oil put in the cumin till the crakkling stops, add sliced onion & fry till golden, add the ginger & fry for 15 seconds.
  • Step #6 Pour into daal & add 1 1/4 c reserved liquid & let simmer for 10 mins stirring carefully to prevent sticking to bottom of pan.
  • Step #7 Taste for salt & more if not enough.
  • Step #8 Add the cream & allow to simmer for 2 mins till heated through.
  • Step #9 Stir carefully as you simmer cream.
  • Step #10 Can be eaten with chippattis (pita bread), naan, or rice & sliced tomatoes & onions sprinkled with salt & vinager.
