Chocolate Web Cake Recipe

Ingredients
  • 3/4 c evaporated milk
  • 1 1/3 c all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/4 c evaporated milk
  • 1 1/2 c white sugar
  • 2 tsps vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 (1 oz) squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • 1/2 c shortening
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/3 c white sugar
  • 2 tsps baking powder
  • 1 1/3 c shortening
  • 2 (1 oz) squares unsweetened chocolate, melted

Directions
  • Step #1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F(175 degrees C).
  • Step #2 Grease two 9 inch round cake pans.
  • Step #3 Sift flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda & 1 1/2 c of the white sugar together in a large mixing bowl.
  • Step #4 Add 1/2 c of the shortening & 1-1/4 c of the evaporated milk.
  • Step #5 Beat at medium speed with an electric mixer for 2 mins.
  • Step #6 Beat in the eggs & beat for 2 mins longer.
  • Step #7 Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  • Step #8 Drizzle 1 square of the melted chocolate in a spiral on top of each cake.
  • Step #9 Feather lines with a knife to form a web pattern.
  • Step #10 Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 to 40 mins or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Step #11 Let cakes cool in pans for 10 mins then remove this from pans & let cakes cool completely.
  • Step #12 To Make Filling: Combine the 2 squares unsweetened melted chocolate, 1 1/3 c shortening, 1 c white sugar, 3/4 c evaporated milk & the vanilla together & beat with an electric mixer until smooth.
  • Step #13 To Assemble Cake: Cut each cooled cake layer in half horizontally.
  • Step #14 Spread 1/4 of the filling between each layer making a 4 layer cake with a web design on top.
  • Step #15 Frost sides with the remaining filling.
