Ingredients
1 1/2 c all-purpose flour
1 1/2 c water
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 c butter
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
3/4 c dates, pitted & sliced
2 tbsps heavy cream
1 1/2 c raisins
3/4 c white sugar
1/2 c sliced walnuts
1/4 tsp salt
4 tbsps butter
1/2 c brown sugar
Directions
Step #1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Step #2 Grease & flour a 9 inch square pan.
Step #3 In a saucepan, mix water & raisins.
Step #4 Bring to a boil & cook for 5 mins.
Step #5 Remove from heat & stir in the sliced dates & baking soda.
Step #6 Set aside.
Step #7 In a large bowl, cream together 1/2 c butter & 3/4 c white sugar until light & fluffy.
Step #8 Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the the vanilla.
Step #9 Beat in the flour, salt & date mixture.
Step #10 Pour batter into prepared pan.
Step #11 Bake in the preheated oven for 45 mins, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
Step #12 Remove cake from oven, & set oven to Broil.
Step #13 Make Topping: In a saucepan, melt 4 tbsps of butter.
Step #14 Stir in brown sugar, cream & sliced nuts.
Step #15 Spread mixture over warm cake & place under broiler until lightly browned, about 3 mins.
Step #16 Watch carefully - it burns easily under the broiler.
Step #17 Cool before serving.
