Down East White Bread Recipe

Ingredients
  • 3 c lukewarm water .
  • 1 tbsp sugar .
  • 1 tbsp salt .
  • 2 (1/4 oz) packages dry yeast .
  • 1 egg (beaten) .
  • 1/3 c sugar .
  • 9 c flour (approximately) .
  • 1/2 c lukewarm water .
  • 1/2 c cooking oil

Directions
  • Step #1 Using a large bowl,mix the first three ingredients together & allow to set for 10 mins.
  • Step #2 Add the remaining 3 c water, sugar, egg, oil, & salt; mix well.
  • Step #3 Then add 3 c of the flour & mix well so the mixture will be smooth.
  • Step #4 Then add 3 c more of the flour, stirring again till smooth.
  • Step #5 Keep on adding the flour until the dough is fairly stiff.
  • Step #6 Knead 100 times.
  • Step #7 Put into a greased bowl & cover to let rise till double.
  • Step #8 Punch down & rise again till doubled in size.
  • Step #9 Turn onto a lightly floured board & punch down & let rest for 10 mins.
  • Step #10 Knead for about 3 mins & divide dough in thirds.
  • Step #11 Make each third into a loaf & place this in greased bread pan.
  • Step #12 Rise till almost double.
  • Step #13 Bake at 450 degrees for 10 mins; lower the heat to 325F degees & bake for about 25 mins longer.
  • Step #14 If they get too brown, put foil wrap on top.
  • Step #15 Take out of pans & put on racks with a clean dish towel over the top.
