Step #1 Mix & bake cake according to package directions in 9" cake pans.
Step #2 Cool completely.
Step #3 Mix confectioners sugar, softened cream cheese & 3 tbsp.
Step #4 of Cool Whip whipped topping.
Step #5 mix well.
Step #6 Spread 1/2 the mixture on bottom layer.
Step #7 Spread 1/2 can cherry pie filling over it.
Step #8 Place on top layer of cake.
Step #9 Secure with toothpicks, if necessary.
Step #10 Spread remaining cherry filling over all.
Step #11 But don't add cherries yet.
Step #12 mix the pudding mix with the remaining Cool Whip topping.
Step #13 Add a small amount of milk if it seems too stiff.
Step #14 Frost sides of cake and build a rim at the top of the cake to hold the remaining cherry pie filling.
