In the past, I have always put them in a basket or staked them. Just wondering...what do you all prefer? What would happen if I just left them without staking or basketing? I am fairly new to "big" gardening, but I am really hoping to get the things growing!

There are two basic types of tomato plants. Determinate and indeterminate. Determinate means they grow to a specific height and all the tomatoes ripen at the same time. These are bush type tomato plants and need a cage around them to keep the plant erect and the fruit off the ground. And the cage kinda sorta keeps the critters away from the fruit.
The indeterminate type tomato plant is more of a vine style plant. It will keep on growing until the frost kills it. It puts out clusters of fruit as it grows and the fruit ripens at different times. This style plant benefits more from staking and tying the plant stem to the steak as it grows.
