Slugs!
Egads I hate these things! And this year there seems to be an over abundance of them. My cat is an outside cat and we keep his food on the back patio and now and then we forget to get it put up. So it is like slug central back there. I think because of a lot of rain?
I dunno, does anyone have any good ways to get rid of them? I've tried surrounding the patio with egg shells...didn't work. MIL told me put little bowls of beer...I think my cat got drunk. lol

HELP!

RE: Slugs!
The beer does work and it lets the slugs go bye-bye feeling good.

Try ringing the food bowl with salt. Salt will make the slugs dissolve very very quickly with a lot of bubbling and carrying on. I don't think the slugs will even try to cross the salt ring so you will be saving them for whatever benefit the slugs do do and I don't think the cat will eat too much of the salt unless you are not seasoning his food.

RE: Slugs!
Thanks Points. Will try tonight. My teen was standing over my shoulder reading when I saw this last night and she didn't get past the salt part...she ran and grabbed it and headed straight out there and just shook it everywhere! Kids...gotta love em. So anyway, didn't see many before I went to bed and got up today to one dead. And I have a patio to spray off now. LOL

RE: Slugs!
This year has been a tough one as far as slugs are concerned :it is hard to keep up with them in the rain and any barrier you put down will have to be reapplied daily after each rain storm. Ber traps will wash out with heavy rain.
I normally apply a ring of Datamatious earth and or wood ash from the fireplace as a deterrent. Reapplying after every storm.

RE: Slugs!
try attracting toads. they like moist places. you can make a toad house by chipping a hole in a terra cotta pot and putting it in your garden/yard upside down. put it in the shade so it will stay more moist and try to put water on it sometimes. they also sell little toad houses you can buy.

RE: Slugs!
Oh I love the idea of the toad house! My kids would get a kick out of that too.

Fireplace ash? Already have that cleaned out and carted off...How bout some ashes from the grill, Trigger?

RE: Slugs!
You could try the ash from your grill.
I was on the impression that their was silica in wood ash which is like shards of glass to the slugs skin and a source of potash for your garden.

Let us know how that works out.

RE: Slugs!
You could be correct trigger. And somewhere in the distance a neuron is firing bringing back a ghost memory of using ash as an ingredient in the making of soap. You filter water through the ash then do something with the water.

RE: Slugs!
Another tip I recently came across is to place a strip of aluminum foil about four inches wide around the base of your plants to work as a barrier against slugs and any cutworms.

RE: Slugs!
I am so disgusted with my garden ,I could cry. Animals ate peppers, zucchini, onions, peppers. I could always depend on tomatoes but with animals and all the rain, forget that!
